War Waged by Superpowers is the Problem - Terrorism Waged by the Dispossessed is the Symptom
Yesterday I attended a presentation where a well-educated speaker stated that terrorism was emerging as a top social problem. I wanted to respond that actually WAR was the top problem and that terrorism is a derivative of war. I've spent time in Europe so I know that Europeans have never fully assimilated the migrant flows produced by over a hundred years of colonial manipulation across the globe. Those flows are now exacerbated by endless wars waged by superpowers. The US neocon plan and military deployments aimed at replacing totalitarian governments in Middle East countries are... more »

And, into that vacuum stepped Islam …
Let’s talk about Islam, and its evil. Evil can only achieve its values through the actions of others—by that which we let evil-doers extort from us. Both are devout NRA-shills, Portman with an NRA rating of A and Strickland, believe it or not, with an even better NRA rating of A-plus! The solution for anyone who takes gun safety seriously is the progressive Democrat who's running against these two conservative relics: Cincinnati City Councilman P.G. What Does The Islamic State Really Want
(*Click on Image to Enlarge*) Control of territory is an essential precondition for the Islamic State’s authority in the eyes of its supporters. This map, adapted from the work of the Institute for the Study of War, shows the territory under the caliphate’s control as of January 15, along with areas it has attacked. Where it holds power, the state collects taxes, regulates prices, operates courts, and administers services ranging from health care and education to telecommunications. *Graeme Wood, The Atlantic:* *What ISIS Really Wants* The Islamic State is no mere collection of psy... more »

Republican Primary Voters Do NOT Care That Ted Cruz Is Unelectable Outside The Old Confederacy
Late Sunday night, in reviewing *Radio Free Albemuth*, we looked at Philip K. Dick's insightful portrayal of a dystopian future with a paranoid, manipulative 4th term president, who is very much the spitting image of Ted Cruz. Perhaps like-minded neo-fascist Steve King read it last night too and felt inspired. He endorsed Cruz early yesterday. "I'm all the way in, supporting Ted Cruz for president," he told Iowa xenophobes and racists. "Do your duty for God and country," he urged the kind of crackpot extremists they need at the caucuses on February 1 who back them both. Tough blow... more »

The Difference Between My Psychiatrist and My Shaman
The fundamental problem we face is that the spirit body operates the physical body. This means that if all is working properly the interaction between the two is almost undetectable. The physical mind has its own tasking as well and is meant to run independently for most of the time. The spirit steps in to provide necessary guidance. What this screams is that mental illness is caused by mostly biochemical imbalances produced by foreign toxins or internal damage to the brain or even the body. This is very important because the complexity is likely such that it will require ... more »

CIA Chief Warns Islamic State May Have Other Attacks Ready
[image: Islamic State] CIA Director John Brennan warned on Monday that the attacks in Paris claimed by the extremist Islamic State movement were not a "one-off event" and that the militants may have similar operations ready to launch. Foiling those plots, however, could... Continue reading *“CIA Chief Warns Islamic State May Have Other Attacks Ready”* at *reuters.com*.
Why Can’t the Dems Say ‘Radical Islam’?
[image: Dem presidential debate - 400] Saturday night's Democratic presidential debate offered the country a moment of clarity that exposes just how brittle and discredited the worldview of America's elites has become--and it showed that critiques of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's approach to policy... I’ll Say it Again: If You Live in Europe, You Need a Gun
[image: gun] In February, after the last round of jihad in Paris, I wrote a column calling on every Jewish man, woman and child in Europe to get a gun and learn how to use it. I now wish to revise my statement: the goyim should... Continue reading *“I’ll Say it Again: If You Live in Europe, You Need a Gun”* at *tabletmag.com*.
The Pharisees and Sadducees of Our Time
[image: Pharisees and Sadducees Tempting Jesus - 400] Criticizing the "Pharisees" is recurrent in Pope Francis' words. In numerous discourses, between 2013 and 2015, he has spoken of "the sickness of the Pharisees" (7th November 2013) "who rebuke Jesus for not respecting the Sabbath" (1st April 2014), of... A Philosopher Who Was a Welder Considers Marco Rubio’s Call for Fewer Philosophers and More Welders

Marco Rubio's comments about vocational training during last Tuesday's Republican debate, I've been getting letters from friends, students, and former students who know my checkered past. Paris Attackers May Have Used Playstation 4 To Commit Atrocity
Officials in Brussels have said that the people responsible for Friday’s attacks in Paris were likely to have used Sony’s Playstation 4 to coordinate the operation. The game consoles allow the terrorists to communicate more securely due to the effective way they encrypt data, making it more difficult for the authorities to communications. Yahoo News reports: “The thing that keeps me awake at night is the guy behind his computer, looking for messages from [the Islamic State group, or ISIS] and other hate preachers,“ Jan Jambon, Belgium’s federal home affairs minister, said Friday, a... more »
Of Course Bernie Was 100% Correct To Link Terrorism To Climate Change
I was just driving home and the NPR host was talking about a poll on Climate Change. By the time I started paying attention, I had missed the details or who had done the poll. I figured I'd find it on Google when I got home. But I can't find it. And it was interesting because the findings were at odds with what most of us assume about Climate Change. First of all, they found that Americans believe it's caused by man and say they'd be willing to pay to ameliorate that. And not just liberals in San Francisco. Every state. Both parties and independents. Yes, Republicans as well as no... more »
The Ramey Pictures
I hadn't realized that the pictures of Ramey would become so important and there would be a few who thought you can't understand this without seeing the "missing" Ramey picture. There has been an offer to share this picture with others, though it seems that permission must be obtained from another, I found this which came out of the trip to the University of Texas at Arlington in April. It certainly won't appease everyone, but at least you all can have a look at the missing Ramey photo that apparently only appeared in the newspaper and that the negative is not available. The Ramey/... more »
Nov. 16: only the Irving press could....
...put out a trivial and boring newspaper today. So let's save it until the end. I was quite shocked by CBC TV coverage of news of the Paris killings. It was almost as unprofessional as Irving press always is. One news cast ended with a sad and mournful scene of people setting candles and flowers on a Paris sidewalk in mourning. Now, it is sad. But where were all those mourners when France was torturing and murdering the people of Algeria and Indo-China? And how come we never saw that on TV news? Where were the news stories when France, leading up to that terrible day in Paris... more »
Los Zetas Cartel Gunmen Crossed into Texas, Disappeared into US

Editor's Note
I am giving a lecture tonight to some academics/businessmen/politicians on how Russia's political and economic elites see the world today. Blogging will return late tonight. *Update Tuesday 2:03 EST: *So I thought .... a dinner with about 100 interesting people in Old Montreal .... and since there were only going to be 3 speakers (I was the last one) ... it would be over rather quickly. I was wrong. Sighhhh .... as I learned last night (again) .... a lot of people in the West want to know what is happening in Russia, and when they hear me they realize that the narrative that they ar... more »

"A Look to the Heavens"
"A gorgeous spiral galaxy some 100 million light-years distant, NGC 1309 lies on the banks of the constellation of the River (Eridanus). NGC 1309 spans about 30,000 light-years, making it about one third the size of our larger Milky Way galaxy. Bluish clusters of young stars and dust lanes are seen to trace out NGC 1309's spiral arms as they wind around an older yellowish star population at its core. *Click image for larger size.* Not just another pretty face-on spiral galaxy, observations of NGC 1309's recent supernova and Cepheid variable stars contribute to the calibration of the... more »
The Poet: Mary Oliver, "When Death Comes"
*"When Death Comes"* "When death comes like the hungry bear in autumn, when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse to buy me, and snaps his purse shut; when death comes like the measle-pox; when death comes like an iceberg between the shoulder blades, I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering; what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness? And therefore I look upon everything as a brotherhood and a sisterhood, and I look upon time as no more than an idea, and I consider eternity as another possibility, and I think of each life as a flower, as... more »
Inquiry Finds Mounting Proof of Syria Link to Paris Attacks
The media creates that which you are supposed to believe. Don't. It was obvious all the accusatory fingers were going to point in that direction. Cause there was a Syrian passport found immediately PennyNovember 14, 2015 at 7:00 AM Putting this bit here: A 'syrian' passport was found- near the man who detonated the suicide bomb? which means nothing at all- these were being handed out like candy to the fleeing refugees- traded like kids trading hockey cards in Canada- at least the way they used to- what makes it interesting is that it tells us where the illegitimate authorities want u... more »
"Benedicto"
*"Benedicto" * “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. May your rivers flow without end, meandering through pastoral valleys tinkling with bells, past temples and castles and poets' towers into a dark primeval forest where tigers belch and monkeys howl, through miasmal and mysterious swamps and down into a desert of red rock, blue mesas, domes and pinnacles and grottos of endless stone, and down again into a deep vast ancient unknown chasm where bars of sunlight blaze on profile... more »
Quotes of the day: On the ultimate impotence of evil
“Existence is not a negation of negatives. Evil, not value, is an absence and a negation, evil is impotent and has no power but that which we let it extort from us… The spread of evil is the symptom of a vacuum. Whenever evil wins, it is only by default...” ”When men reduce their virtues to the approximate, then evil acquires the force of an absolute, when loyalty to an unyielding purpose is dropped by the virtuous, it’s picked up by scoundrels—and you get the indecent spectacle of a cringing, bargaining, traitorous good and a self-righteously uncompromising evil. ~ Ayn R... more »
Chet Raymo, "As Time Goes By"
* "As Time Goes By"* by Chet Raymo "Is time something that is defined by the ticking of a cosmic clock, God's wristwatch say? Time doesn't exist except for the current tick. The past is irretrievably gone. The future does not yet exist. Consciousness is awareness of a moment. Or is time a dimension like space? We move through time as we move through space. The past is still there; we're just not there anymore. The future exists; we'll get there. We experience time as we experience space, say, by looking out the window of a moving train. Or is time… Physicists and philosophers have... more »

Not One More Muslim ‘Refugee.’ If Need Be, Shut Down the Government.

Commentaries, Analysis, And Editorials -- November 16, 2015
*Martin Chulov, The Guardian*:* Isis: The Inside Story* One of the Islamic State’s senior commanders reveals exclusive details of the terror group’s origins inside an Iraqi prison – right under the noses of their American jailers. In the summer of 2004, a young jihadist in shackles and chains was walked by his captors slowly into the Camp Bucca prison in southern Iraq. He was nervous as two American soldiers led him through three brightly-lit buildings and then a maze of wire corridors, into an open yard, where men with middle-distance stares, wearing brightly-coloured prison uni... more »
CIA Chief Says They ‘Knew’ ISIS Were Planning To Attack Europe
CIA director John Brennan says the spy agency “knew” that ISIS terrorists were planning to attack “Europe in particular.” He also warned that more attacks were ‘in the pipeline’ Press TV reports: Brennan, who rarely appears in public, made the remarks at the opening session of the Global Security Forum 2015 in Washington, DC, on Monday in the wake of the Paris attacks, claimed by Daesh Takfirs, which left more than 130 dead and 350 injured. The CIA chief said the late Friday shooting and bombing spree was “not a surprise” as “We knew that plans or plotting by ISIL was underway looki... more »
Triers of fact to be given leeway in credibility and findings of fact
*R. v Govenlock*, 2015 ABCA 343: [3] Trial judges have considerable leeway in their appreciation of the evidence and the proper inferences to be drawn therefrom, in their assessment of the credibility of witnesses, and in their ultimate assessment of whether the Crown’s case is made out beyond a reasonable doubt: R. v Biniaris, 2000 SCC 15 (CanLII) at paras. 24, 37, [2000] 1 SCR 381. Findings of credibility and of fact by a trial judge are entitled to great deference, and should only be interfered with on appeal if they are unreasonable, or in other words if they disp... more »

"Learning How To Think..."
"As I'm sure you guys know by now, it is extremely difficult to stay alert and attentive, instead of getting hypnotized by the constant monologue inside your own head (may be happening right now). Twenty years after my own graduation, I have come gradually to understand that the liberal arts cliché about teaching you how to think is actually shorthand for a much deeper, more serious idea: learning how to think really means learning how to exercise some control over how and what you think. It means being conscious and aware enough to choose what you pay attention to and to choose ho... more »
