Planning? What planning?
When it's raining out or otherwise makes it difficult for us to appreciate the joys of getting out of our robes and into gum boots, there are other homestead-y things we can do, such as pottering about in the kitchen or sewing. Planning? What's that? Oh, actually we do have a plan. It has kind of settled in, though, and does not need much updating. Two posts ago, we talked about how the satellite view of the home place lent itself to zone analysis. That's a step in planning, for sure. We used to have a drawing of the place on a white board, and after satellite photos became avail... more »

Paul Craig Roberts Asks “Why Aren’t ISIS Targeting Politicians?”
American economist Paul Craig Roberts has raised the pertinent question: Why do terrorists focus on attacking ordinary civilians, leaving politicians largely alone? Off-guardian.org reports: Historically, terror attacks are not on the innocent but on the rulers and those who are guilty. For example,... more »

Life Skills: “Protect Yourself from Control Dramas”
*“Protect Yourself from Control Dramas”* by Jody Janati *"What is a Control Drama? *A control drama, as coined by James Redfield in his book, “The Celestine Prophecy,” is played by anyone who is feeling low on power or energy, to manipulate and steal the energy of another. Control dramas are unconscious strategies all people use to gain power or energy from another person and to essentially, “get their way with others.” We get our way with others by making them pay attention to us and then elicit a certain reaction from them to make ourselves feel fulfilled. The positive feelings w... more »
BBC comedy, the EU and BBC bias
This week's *Feedback *featured a clip from the first episode of the 47th series of Radio 4's eternally somewhat-less-than-side-splitting *Now Show *- a comedic 'team rant' in favour of the EU and against critics of the EU, Unlike the recent 'rants' from Andrew Neil and Emily Maitlis, this particular rant was absolutely nothing new. And I'm not just talking about the 46 previous series of the *Now Show* either. I've heard many a pro-EU rant on BBC Radio 4 comedy shows over the years - or, more accurately, many a rant against critics of the EU - especially UKIP supporters and rig... more »
Getting it about right (again)
Finally in this series of post of this week's *Newswatch*, here are the answers given by the BBC's controller of daily news programmes, Gavin Allen. They are preceded by my summaries (in the form of questions) of what they were meant to be answers to. I'll let you be the judge of them: *What priorities did the BBC have in the immediate aftermath of the attacks?* It was interesting. It was such a remarkably confused picture initially and, obviously, the key priority is to tell people what we know and to tell people what's happened, to the best of our knowledge at that stage....and... more »
Other concerns about the BBC's Paris coverage
Sticking with this week's *Newswatch, *here are some of the other bouquets and brickbats (mostly brickbats) broadcast by the programme. I want to record them because, even though they aren't the kind of complaints that blogs like ours are usually interested in, they are quite thought-provoking. The only bouquet ran as follows: *Thank you for such excellent news coverage from Paris over the weekend. It has represented the best possible standards in news broadcasting, providing calm, balanced news reports, despite very tense and potentially dangerous situations.* Chris & ... more »
"One of the viewers"
This week's *Newswatch *focused, inevitably, on the BBC's coverage of the Paris massacres. They featured Gavin Allen, the BBC's controller of daily news programes, in the studio and "one of the viewers who's been in touch with us over the past few days, Richard McCallum, who's in Oxford" on a video link. As soon as I saw viewer Richard McCallum against the backdrop of Oxford my distrust of the BBC kicked in. Unfortunately, from past experience I've grown to disbelieve the BBC whenever they present someone as merely 'an ordinary viewer'. I wondered if he might be something a litt... more »
RAF Typhoons Intercept Russian Tupolev Tu-160 Bombers Close To UK Airspace
Two Russian Tupolev Tu-160 Bombers on Syrian bombing missions, came close to United Kingdom’s airspace. Royal Air Force Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland intercepted the Tu-160 bombers, each capable of carrying 16 nuclear missiles, when they came within Britain’s area of interest, in international airspace over the Atlantic and close to UK’s airspace. The Russian Bombers had taken an unusual route to their targets in Syria. The Tupolev TU 160 BlackJacks made an 8,000-mile trip past Norway, Britain and Gibraltar, heading to the Mediterranean. They then launched missiles at ta...more »
Iran’s Parliament Speaker: West Must Stop Supporting Terrorists
Iran’s Parliament speaker Ali Larijani has slammed the West’s double standards in the Middle East and has called for an end to foreign support to terrorists operating in the region. During a meeting with the chair of the UK Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Crispin Blunt in Tehran on Saturday, Larijani said: “If Western countries seek to fight terrorism, they must first change the existing mindset toward them because regional countries believe that the West is using the issue of terrorism as a tool [to achieve their objectives]” Press TV reports: Larijani said that Western coun... more »

God is dead
God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. Yet his shadow still looms. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it? —Nietzsche, *The Gay Science, Section 125,*

Cancer Propaganda Again
In January 2015 I posted about a new study that attributes cancer to random mutations. I've re-posted it at the bottom of this entry. In the January post, I argued that although random mutations may indeed cause cancer, the research reported at that time failed to account for the possibility that environmental factors were contributing to (purportedly) random mutations. Once again this truncated and simplified narrative that cancer is just a random phenomenon is being spun in The Wall Street Journal to explain (away) cancer rates, this time in children: Ron Winslow (Nov 19, 2015)... more »

Why The Dippers Lost
http://o.canada.com/ Some folks are beginning to look through the embers to explain why the official opposition is now the third party. Geoffrey Rafe Hall writes: Many observers, picking through the post-mortem of the NDP campaign, have laid most of the blame on the niqab debate and the eruption of identity politics, on Tom Mulcair’s flat performance in the first leaders’ debate, and on Justin Trudeau’s substantial personal appeal. All of these factors contributed to the result, of course — but not one of them was solely capable o... more »

The Magus by John Fowles
Okay, I read quite a bit. I'm not a full on book snob, but thanks to reading so much and working randomly through the huge pile of novels we've accumulated over the years, when something stands out I know it has to be good. And that's just happened reading *The Magus* by John Fowles. Being at once highly educated yet appallingly ignorant, I knew the book had a good reputation, but in the manner of Paul Coehlo's *The Alchemist* has a following. Anticipating some semi-mystic wittering common among the more esoteric offerings of the 1960s and 70s, *The Magus* took those expectations a... more »

"I can rant about this from hour to hour because it makes me so angry that we should walk into other people’s countries and completely demolish whatever system they might have had beforehand, and then after, when the pressure gets a bit too great and you walk out, we never notice again what’s happened"

Tracking Muslims: bad but maybe better than alternatives
*Those whose privacy is reduced could be compensated* Donald Trump has proposed a database for the citizens who are Muslims, some kind of a tracking system, and perhaps suppression of the mosques. Other candidates have criticized the proposal and Hillary called it shocking. *The "atoms" in Brussels' "Atomium" fail to behave as atoms according to the laws of quantum mechanics. Is this well-known structure among the potential targets?* But you know, in the current situation, Trump's proposal is one of the common-sense ideas that are ready to be at least considered. The actual suppo... more »

Desperately Seeking the Real Islam
Further to my last, I think someone should compile a detailed checklist of various not-the-real-Islamists and pass it to David Cameron and Theresa May so they can issue once and for all the definitive rules on what is ‘the real', as opposed to a perversion of, Islam. Just to be clear. Think of it as a search, as in ‘where’s Wally?’ The list should include Islamic State otherwise known as DAESH, Al Qaeda and the others I mentioned previously, as well as the affiliated branches of Islamic Jihadi groups and groupettes. As in The Jihadi’s Front for ISIS and The ISISian Jihadi’s Front. ... more »

*An Unhappy History Seems to Be Repeating Itself* Riots in black neighborhoods. Rebellions on campus. The news these past few months and particularly in the past week has been full of stories that remind us, as William Faulkner wrote a little more than half a century after the Civil War, “the past is never dead. It’s not even past.” We’re seeing something that looks eerily like the recurrence of events that led, half a century ago, to the destruction of much of our cities and much of our campuses. Half a century before the recent uproar at Yale and the University of Missouri, Ame... more »

*"If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live."* *Greenies love that quote because it gives a veneer of profundity to their totally ignorant scares about fluctuating bee populations. They even attribute the quote to Einsten, even though it in fact comes from the writings of Maurice Maeterlinck, who was a Belgian poet. And Maeterlinck was wrong if honey bees were what he was talking about, which he probably was and which Greenies clearly are. Honey Bees Are Not Native to North America so how did the Indians get on before the white... more »
Jeremy Corbyn's "well-known objections to violence in any forms"
Following on from Sue's post, there's another article by Nick Cohen in this week's *Spectator *that's well worth reading:* Jeremy Corbyn isn't anti-war. He's just anti-West*, Nick Cohen argues a point that will be familiar to at least some of us: namely that Stop the War Coalition types (like Mr Corbyn) aren't really anti-war. They're merely anti-*this* war (whichever war that may be) - if 'this war' involves 'the West' attacking 'the anti-West'. Why? Because such people believe that 'the West' (the US, UK, Israel, etc) is the cause of the world's evils and they take sides agains... more »
Myanmar's New Dictator: Aung San Suu Kyi
Suu Kyi disenfranchised a million voters before elections, and has declared herself above the constitution afterwards. What about that seems "democratic?" *November 21, 2015* (Tony Cartalucci - NEO) - The Western media is portraying Myanmar's recent elections as historic. One commentator described Myanmar as an "exuberant nation prepared for a new era of democracy and political freedom." But one wonders what sort of democracy and political freedom can be borne of elections in which nearly a million voters were banned from casting their ballots and with the apparent victor already ... more »
Religious Indoctrination - torture and terror - belief and faith
TORTURE ENHANCES BELIEF: fact. The major reason you believe (in god (in work (in abracadabra))) with such passion is due to SLR or Serious Legal Repercussions and that's enough deterrent for most rational indoctrinates who want to avoid such pain. Even those brave thinkers among us who believe in something like non-marketed non-indoctrinated non-anthropomorphised PERSONAL CONSCIOUSNESS still generally go ahead and externalise it to the regal 'him' and 'his' (in terms of 'the lord's power') as entirely separate from 'you' and 'yours'. ??? TERROR ENHANCES FAITH: fact.
China Wants A Military Base In Africa
*Torie Rose DeGhett, VIC News:* *China Is Angling for a Strategic Outpost on the Horn of Africa* In an ongoing effort to expand its global reach, China is looking to establish an outpost in the tiny nation of Djibouti, strategically located on the Horn of Africa. In the geopolitical world, this latest development falls into the category of big things coming in small packages, and as usual, it raises questions about the nature of China's expansion. Take Down Syria?
What gives the US and NATO the right to decide who the leader of Libya or Syria should be? What gives Obama and John Kerry the right to say 'Assad must go'? Mamma Mia, the musical
Last night, we went to Prague's Congress Center to see the Czech eddition of Mamma Mia! The huge building formerly named "The Culture Palace" was opened in 1981 and the 16th convention of the Czechoslovak Communist Party was the first big event it hosted. (President Husák said the joke about his fall from a skyscraper during the 1986 17th convention.) I am not some kind of a regular spectator of musicals but I like the genre. Some two decades ago, I went to Jesus Christ Superstar (CZ) which was great as well. Now, Mamma Mia! has in some respects become the most successful musical in...more »

FBI: Terrifying Holiday Terrorist Attacks Coming, Millions At Risk
Senior FBI officials are worried that they aren’t equipped to deal with an impending onslaught of holiday terrorist attacks across America, particularly around Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas and New Years’s Eve. Anonymous officials at the agency say millions of Americans are vulnerable to the attacks, and that despite the “significant risk” that attacks are about to occur, the FBI are being forced to put a brave public face on so as not to worry the public. According to Pepsi’s descriptino of the video: “Black Knight Decoded” follows the journey of a father (David Oyelowo) and daughter (Layla Crawford) on their quest to decode the radio signals transmitted from the Black Knight satellite. Whooping Cough Rates Soar In ‘High Vaccine Areas’
A new report shows that whooping cough (Pertussis) has re-emerged in countries that have high vaccination rates, showing that not only is the vaccine ineffective but that it may actually be dangerous. Countries with a consistently high vaccine coverage experience an increase in whooping cough diagnoses, especially among older children and adults. Preventdisease.com reports: The issue may stem from under diagnosis or missed diagnosis and under-reporting, which hinder surveillance, as well as gaps in our knowledge of levels of herd immunity generated by the vaccination programs. Hillary Clinton Wants To Ban This Stand Up Comedy Set
Hillary Clinton was left furious after watching a comedy set at Hollywood’s Laugh Factory recently. The Pentagon Is Looking For New Ideas On How To Wage Future Wars
Washington Post: *As it combats the Islamic State, Pentagon looks to assemble the force of the future* As it wrestles with how best to attack yet another unconventional enemy—one that is without a recognized state, driven by extreme ideology and willing to kill innocents on civilian territory—the Pentagon has largely stuck to a conventional strategy: bombs away. The U.S.’s war against the Islamic State has largely been fought from the air, with old reliables of the U.S. arsenal, such as the B-1 bomber and the Tomahawk cruise missile. But while the force the Pentagon has deployed ... more »

Republicans Wasting Millions Of Dollars On Useless, Perhaps Counterproductive, TV Ads-- Poor Jeb
A few cycles ago the Blue America PAC used to spend money on TV and radio ads. It didn't take us long to figure what a useless scam that kind of advertising is, especially considering that the TV stations rarely even play the full ads they're charging so much for. But that isn't the only reason why we've come to the conclusion they're a colossal waste of our contributors' money and why we stopped making them years ago and instead have found more effective ways to support our candidates. Reporting yesterday for, ironically ABC-News, Matthew Dowd feels that the Republican candidates... more »

Nov. 20: Brief explanation.
The real post for Nov. 20 is below this one. In the real November 20 post, I apoplogize for errors and for the tiny print in the post. For the last month or so, my computer has been giving me problems I've never had before. In writing the Nov. post, it was astonished at the miniature print and the meanningless letters scattered through it. But when I tried to correct them, the screen just turned pink. Thus, I tried publishing without taking out the garbage letters. So I decided to make no corrections, even to my errors, and to publish it with an apology at the start. To my amazement,... more »

Abortion: Once and For All
My entire blogging career -- if you can call something that doesn't pay a "career" -- has been conducted during the Dark Ages. It started back at Birth Pangs, now sadly gone but snippets have been saved at the WayBack Machine (hours of fun!). Birth Pangs was focussed on reproductive rights just about exclusively. We created DJ! in 2009. Our birthday was yesterday. With DJ! we spread our focus, but I -- and deBeauxOs to a lesser extent -- stayed on the repro rights beat. I've been thinking about what I want to do now that the Dark Ages are over and we don't have to remain constant... more »
