TV Watch: Come on, February -- "Better Call Saul" is getting closer!
*I wasn't able to embed it, but you can find this new Better Call Saul tease, along with some earlier ones, here.* *by Ken* Be still, my heart! I know the above picture is crap, but yes, that really is our very own Saul Goodman -- or rather, I gather, some yokel named Jimmy McGill. And *Better Call Saul* is apparently on target for a February rollout. And the 2:27 tease is authentically worth the trouble for anyone who's looking forward to the series as much as I am. It's got a slew of in-front-of-the-camera as well as behind-the-camera people, many of them people we've known, or ... more »

Our problem is not teacher quality: Our problem is poverty.
Sent to Time Ideas (Nov. 7). Re: How to ditch the common core and teach kids real skills (Time Ideas, Nov 5, 2014) Marty Nemko suggests that we need "dream-team" teachers because American students' performance on international tests is so bad. A substantial amount of research shows, however, that when we control for the impact of poverty, American test scores are at the top of the world. Our overall scores are unspectacular because there is so much child poverty in US, now 25%. High-scoing countries have much lower levels of child poverty. How An American Prison Camp In Iraq Became The Focal Point For The Emergence Of The Islamic State
*How The Islamic State Evolved In An American Prison -- Terrence McCoy, Washington Post* In March 2009, in a wind-swept sliver of Iraq, a sense of uncertainty befell the southern town of Garma, home to one of the Iraq war’s most notorious prisons. The sprawling Camp Bucca detention center, which had detained some of the war’s most radical extremists along the Kuwait border, had just freed hundreds of inmates. Families rejoiced, anxiously awaiting their sons, brothers and fathers who had been lost to Bucca for years. But a local official fretted. “These men weren’t planting flower... more »

1400 Dead Going On 4000: The Blood Soaked FIFA 2022 Qatar World Cup Built with Slave Labor
I'm brought up with football – that is what North Americans call "soccer" – and I continue to enjoy watching games occasionally. In particular – as most fans of the sport – I immensely enjoy the World Cup play offs, taking place every forth year and assembling the very best players in a context packed with emotion and challenge. In sports, this event has almost the status and grandiosity of the Olympics – and, alas, is headed by an almost as obviously corrupt organisation, FIFA, whose directors and higher officers I'm sure all enjoy all sorts of pleasures as they choose which count... more »

So go to Google to check out Maclean's Magazine, July 24. You will find there an article on Putin by Michael Petrous, who is a sort of pit bull of the lying world that journalism has become. (Yes. And now here we are, about to commemorate the golden anniversary of Nov. 9, 1989, when the wall came crashing down,... more »

Wait... Why Didn't Voters Vote?
Many of the Democrats who lost their seats-- or nearly lost their seats-- Tuesday had nothing to offer voters, which helps explain why voters stayed away. DCCC Chair Steve Israel had a purposeful "mystery meat" strategy for his collection of lousy candidates-- almost all of whom lost. That excuse for a strategy calls for candidates to say nothing controversial that might make someone (like a Republican) not want to vote for them. Of course, by offering nothing, you not only don't get Republicans to vote for Democrats, you discourage Democrats to even both. So they didn't turn out.... more »

As I'm not at work today and was up early (as usual), I thought I might listen to this morning's *Today *and chronicle its bias in detail for your delectation. Unfortunately, I couldn't really find any - except, *perhaps*, for that hands-off Justin Webb interview with Peter Hain (see the previous post). Now, when I say "unfortunately" what, of course, I *should* have said was "fortunately" because bloggers about BBC bias aren't supposed to want bias. We're supposed to dislike bias so if we *don't* f... more »
The Berlin Wall Fell 25 Years Ago

You have been pals since first grade. You do everything together: school, soccer games, sleepovers. One day, men come and put up a barbed-wire fence between your house and your buddy’s. Later, they replace it with a very long, very tall concrete wall. Each slab weighs 6,000 pounds, and many of them are topped with sharp wire. When they finish, you stare at the giant wall that has split y... more »

Understanding Energy Interference: Smile and the world smiles with you
If there is one thing that I have come to really understand over the past year, it is the effects that energy fields have upon us. I would say that the vast majority of RTS readers are the type of people who already know about the effects that WIFI, Heavy duty large power lines, cel towers, microwaves, HAARP etc... have on our bodies, and our personal energy fields. But I would like to focus briefly on the effects that another persons energy field has on us. In part, that’s because we’ve perused MIT’s report on the subject, which is extremely murky. In part, it’s because we read the New York Times news report about this important topic. Ideally, young people shouldn’t get assaulted on MIT’s campus, or anywhere else. Perhaps with that thought in mind, the MIT brass composed and conducted a voluntary survey about every conceivable aspect of students’ sexual lives. Many students completed the s... more »

States With Pro-Employee Laws: Advance Notice Of Noncompete Agreement
In most states, like my home state of Florida, employers can present employees with a noncompete agreement and demand it be signed on the spot. In states like Florida where continued employment is allowed as valid consideration for a noncompete agreement, there can be an obnoxious situation where an employee quits a job, and then, only after starting work, is handed an agreement and told to sign or be fired. The agreement might say they can't work in their industry for a year or two after they leave. At that point, the employee has little choice. They sign and are then fired a few m... more »

"When They Sleep" "All people are children when they sleep. There's no war in them then. They open their hands and breathe in that quiet rhythm heaven has given them. The stars stand guard and a haze veils the sky, a few hours when no one will do anybody harm. If only we could speak to one another then when our hearts are half-open flowers. Words like golden bees would drift in. God, teach me the language of sleep." - Rolf Jacobsen "The Roads Have Come to an End Now"

Our Corporate Masters Are Poisoning Us And Making Us Sick-- For Quick Profits
Let me take a break from the election for a minute-- at least in terms of politicians. There were also food policy issues on the ballot around the country. The results were mixed. Colorado Proposition 105: This statewide ballot initiative pushed for the labeling of genetically modified foods, requiring most GM foods to bear a label reading "produced with genetic engineering." Burrito chain Chipotle and Whole Foods came out in support of the measure, while agribusiness giants Monsanto, PepsiCo, and Kraft came out against it. (Unsurprisingly, 105's opponents raised more than $12 mi... more »

Chet Raymo, "Soul"
"Soul" by Chet Raymo "There is a moment early in Stefan Zweig's "The Post Office Girl" when the eponymous heroine has a moment of illumination: "In this instant, shaken to her very depths, this ecstatic human being has a first inkling that the soul is made of stuff so mysteriously elastic that a single event can make it big enough to contain the infinite." Two interesting thoughts here. First, that the soul is elastic. This is a rather different notion of the human soul than the one I was raised with. We were taught that the soul - the essential self - is created fully formed at t... more »

"Occupy Central's" Dirty Money, Dirtier Leaders
*November 7, 2014* (Tony Cartalucci - NEO) - A torrent of leaked documents and e-mails have exposed the already questionable "Occupy Central" leadership as engaged in unethical, opaque funding. Millions of Hong Kong dollars have been shifted around secretly without "Occupy Central" supporters' knowledge, concealing the source of the funding and the true nature of "Occupy Central's" agenda. For weeks, Beijing, the local Hong Kong government, and analysts around the world have suggested that "Occupy Central" was far from the "spontaneous" "grassroots" movement it claimed to be and th... more »

The Poet: William Stafford, "The Gift"
*"The Gift"* by William Stafford "Time wants to show you a different country. It's the one that your life conceals, the one waiting outside when curtains are drawn, the one Grandmother hinted at in her crochet design, the one almost found over at the edge of the music, after the sermon. It's the way life is, and you have it, a few years given. You get killed now and then, violated in various ways. (And sometimes it's turn about.) You get tired of that. Long-suffering, you wait and pray, and maybe good things come - maybe the hurt slackens and you hardly feel it any more. You have a bre... more »

How Many Fighters Does The islamic State Have?
Reuters *ISIS Has 9,000 ‘Core Fighters.’ Or Maybe 17,000. Or Possibly 30,000. -- Tim Mak, Daily Beast* Another day, another American estimate of ISIS’s strength that’s vastly different from the last guess. How many fighters are the U.S. and its allies combatting in its new war against ISIS? American military and intelligence leaders have only the vaguest of notions. Estimates of ISIS’s strength from these leaders have varied wildly, and now the military commander in charge of degrading and destroying the extremist group says it could be as low as just 9,000 “core fighters.” Gen.... more »

“How Fear Changes What We Hear”
*“How Fear Changes What We Hear”* By Maia Szalavitz “How does fear alter memory? A new study reveals that it can literally change our perception, a process that may help researchers better understand post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), other anxiety disorders and possibly conditions like autism. Researchers have long known that fear doesn't tend to stay restricted to one type of scary experience. For example, the sound of a backfiring car may make a combat veteran dive for cover, even though he knows he's no longer on the battlefield and even though the sound he heard is differe... more »

Is The Tide Turning Against The Islamic State?
*ISIS Wave of Might Is Turning Into Ripple -- Ben Hubbard, New York Times* BAGHDAD — The extremists of the Islamic State appeared unstoppable after their sudden blitz through Iraq this summer, with its battle-hardened fighters continually raising their black flag over newly conquered areas. Today, roughly a third of Iraq is dotted by active battle fronts, with intense fighting and occasional Islamic State victories. But analysts also say the days of easy and rapid gains for the jihadists may be coming to a close in Iraq, as the group’s momentum appears to be stalling. The internati... more »

Adventures in Canning: Apples and more Peppers...
*and if Russia fires up it's malware, we may need it. * Only one of our four apples trees gave us apples this year. The trees seem to run on an every other year schedule. Last year the other three had so many apples I thought the branches would break. We had a wind storm that blew all the apples off the tree so it was just a matter of picking them up. I'm guessing it was well over 25 pounds of apples. 7 quarts of apples and I still have a huge bag of apples. I think they'll be prepped for baking and go into the freezer. and a little bonus for after dinner. I use lard for... more »

On same-sex marriage, the other appeals-court "shoe" finally drops
*by Ken* Obviously the decision handed down this afternoon by a panel of the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, overturning lower-court rulings that had struck down same-sex marriage bans in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky, wasn't influenced by the election but was presumably withheld until today to prevent it from influencing the election. Still, it seems to me to focus some attention on a factor that seems to me to account for Tuesday's strong rightward tilt. I'm going to venture that part of it -- in some miasmatic soup of cause and efffect or perhaps just lurking ma... more »
