Predicting money making opportunities in Brain to Brain Commerce
They say that you can't travel into the future, don't tell that to Arthur C Clark. This very afternoon I took a small trip into the future and what I saw was a lot of money making opportunities. I saw advertizements in the net, A woman was selling her location sensations on line for $25.00 an 1/2 hour via Helmet connected to her and the Internet. I saw Telepresence helmets being sold for $499.00 they were being pushed as a marital aid for frequent travelers. I saw a room in the army barracks, 50 stalls with screens and telepresence helmets rope wired to each stall each s... more »

November Tax-Cast Highlights Lux-Leak, Kenya, Ukraine
So much tax justice news this month that the usually 20 minute podcast runs just shy of 30 minutes. The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists publishes a treasure trove of leaked data from Luxembourg, putting pressure not only on the country but its former Premier, now President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker. Kenya is abolishing many of its tax subsidies; meanwhile the Ukraine has become the first country to mandate a listing of the beneficial owners of all companies operating within the company. Why do I care about opening the space frontier more than any other issue? How can I support this one who is doing this, or attack that one who is doing that? How can I even deal with that guy who is doing so much harm, and why do I attack that woman who has done so much good for other issues? So many reasons, so important to many, ... more »
Second-class articles
I’m not the only one who’s keeping an eye on Gregg Carlstrom, the freelancer who writes articles about Israel for the Times. I see CiF Watch’s Adam Levick also noticed yesterday’s article in with the alarming headline “Israel set to make Arabs second-class citizens.” (Page 32 under the section called “World” ) (£) It wasn’t just the font size that made the piece look alarmist and sensational. Some time ago this writer’s household had to cancel a subscription to the Telegraph after one too many obnoxious pieces from Peter Oborne. I wrote to the paper to register our dismay. Not... more »
The Cosby mess
Illustration by PJ Loughran for *Philadelphia* magazine *by Ken* Beyond the fundamental creepiness of the behavior attributed to Bill Cosby by a growing number of women, there are a bunch of creepy aspects to the mess now swirling around the beloved comedian. Of all of them, perhaps the creepiest is that hardly any of it is news. As *New York Times* media columnist David Carr notes, "the accusations had already been carefully and thoroughly reported in Philadelphia magazine and elsewhere" at least as early as June 2006, when the *Philadelphia* magazine piece, "Dr. Huxtable and Mr.... more »

Malibu And Beverly Hills Are Not Tanzania, Not Yet Anyway
If we've become inured to the plight of our own countrymen being kicked out of their own homes by predatory banksters, something tells me not too many Americans rushed to the Tanzanian embassy at 1232 22nd St NW in DC or to the consulate at 201 East 42nd Street in Manhattan to protest the eviction of 40,000 Masai from their ancestral homeland bordering the world-famous Serengeti national park, to make room for a Dubai royal family private hunting preserve. Gabor Maté: How Capitalism Makes Us Sick
This the first part of an interview with Gabor mate who nicely describes just how stupid system we accept are in terms of dealing with marginal behavior. I personally see ways forward that can make all this slowly disappear completely. The problem though is that the present infrastructure is very much invested and to effect correction it become necessary to evolve transitional structures that nudge the whole think into sanity..And yes, the present solution is insane and even meets the best definition thereof. We keep doing it over and over again. *Gabor Maté: ... more »
Gluten Intolerance and the Herbicide Glyphosate: A National Epidemic
The problem is clearly not going away soon although i am actually hopeful that it will be generally banned just about everywhere outside the USA. Even this will take a long time. Sloan Matt on Sitzen
This work eliminates Sitzen's leap into pure science fiction but leaves the source material intact and brings out much of the esoteric. I am not so sure that he was essentially driven by his publishers who wanted to exploit Danikin's success. The general background appears intact of a plausible intervention by an alien species and we have spirit, soul and the physical separately identified. This is something that i have come to properly understand only recently. The other reality that we must soon face is that alien communities existed during the Bronze Age at least. We now... more »
Archeologists Stunned by Ancient Stone Circles in Mideast
[image: jordania] This is a serious conundrum. They are roughly made with no more skill applied than one would expect from a local community. Thus there is surely a practical explanation that tribesmen could make work well. The only thing that comes to mind is to provide individual corrals for sheep at a trading fair. The animals can be easily be lifted over the fence or a temporary ramp can be provided to allow tghis usage. Once done, they are well enough secured. Otherwise these enclosures would be rather inconvenient for day to day but fine when theft is a probl... more »

*My Comment*: In the past few months many in the Pentagon have been brutal in their commentary and analysis on President Obama's strategy to deal with the Islamic State, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, Ebola, Libya, etc.. What made matters worse was that many of these comments were being made public .... and in clear contradiction of stated White House policies and strategies. The White House had to act to assert its authority .... and not surprising they did so today. The result I predict is going to be immediate. Tap water, beer and beef: The surprising facts of life in Managua
Why does meat taste better in developing countries? We'll have been in Managua for a month as of tomorrow, just long enough that I'm no longer getting lost every time I walk out the door but short enough that every day still holds some surprising discovery. Herewith, a small list of things I hadn't been expecting: - *You can drink the water from the tap in Managua.* Who knew? I just presumed we'd be drinking bottled water for the whole time we were here, as was the case for more than two years in Honduras. But I kept hearing from one person after another that Managua... more »
Letter from Managua: Missing the strange
I can see why people wind up travelling to more and more exotic places. After a month in Managua, I recognize a faint disappointment at the lack of full-on culture shock. The first month in Copan Ruinas, less than three years ago, was a thrill ride of new sensations. The grungy home stay, the cobbled streets, the half-starved dogs and sheer newness of life in the world’s most dangerous country. We would walk along, under the scorching sun, and say ‘Geez, we’re living in Honduras’ in a slightly bewildered way. The arrival in Nicaragua was wildly uneventful by comparison. Sure, there’... more »

#JohnKeyHistory: Peaceful Settlement? [updated]
The PM wasn't exactly right suggesting settlement in NZ was *entirely* peaceful -- although it was far more peaceful than western settlement elsewhere. Notes on #CameronMustGo
At the Stoke Central Labour annual fundraiser on Friday night, our guest Alastair Campbell argued it was absolutely necessary for Labour people to use Twitter, despite the "difficulties" Emily Thornberry had got herself into. For Alastair, social media was a platform by which we could reach huge audiences, shortcutting the gatekeeper functions of the press and TV news. Not an original musing it has to be said, but a truism borne out less than a day later with #CameronMustGo. Last weekend #webackEd achieved the similar, and many of the people who were behind that did the twitterly s... more »
Some of the Inside Story
United States Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is stepping down from his post atop the Pentagon, the Obama-appointee said Monday from the White House. Hagel's departure could both signal the White House is ready to carry out a more aggressive foreign policy. Patrick Henningsen writes: History will eventually show (we hope) that the elephant in the room isn’t *‘how to deal with ISIS’*, but how to conceal and whitewash Washington’s integral role in building up, funding, training and arming today’s extremist ISIS fighters.

Shocker! Responsible Abortion Reporting from National Post!
Crazy busy, but a quick post because I want to encourage responsible reporting about abortion. Here is the National Post's story on a report about abortion access in Canada. [Spoiler: Access needs a lot of improvement.] Because people either don't know or forget from one abortion story to the next, the NP piece includes this *de rigueur* statement. There is currently no federal law governing abortion in Canada. The Supreme Court of Canada struck down the country’s previous abortion law as unconstitutional in 1988. Clear on that, are we? Here's the new and admirable bit. Abortion... more »

The Plot Thickens
Far from embracing the lame duck role that the pundits are trying to foist on him, Barack Obama apparently plans to goose-step his way through the rest of his term. Not only is he resuming the Iraq/Middle Eastern war that he was elected to stop, he is continuing in full secrecy control-freak Nixon mode, both stonewalling the release of the CIA torture report and stealthily ordering continuation of the Afghanistan war. He announced his military intentions through a controlled leak to the* New York Times* (see previous post) rather than in a televised address to the American people. ... more »

A Reason to be Optimistic
The weather is creepy...we had frost for several days, and now it is almost 70 degrees (F). All the leaves are down, except for a few oaks. This is a sycamore leaf I picked up off the ground, from one of several trees I planted about 10 years ago. They are about 25 feet high now. One of the reasons, besides their dappled bark and reflective white branches, that I have always loved sycamores is their giant leaves, which I recall as being as big as dinner plates. For quite a while now, they haven't been as large - like the one on the top, and most even smaller, like this one: Thi... more »
Reflexive Distrust of Rape Victims
We interrupt our semi-frequent blogging about political-economy to talk about Bill Cosby. The thing about celebrities is that when they get into scandals, they get a lot of people talking about the wider issues of these scandals, because the nature of celebrity is that people know who you are and have an opinion about you. O.J. Simpson, Jian Ghomeshi, and now Bill Cosby. (Just to name a few. Hey! They're all men of colour! Why is that? Truth be told, I thought about mentioning Bill Clinton, but decided he was a politician more than a celebrity. And I had a narrower point to make, ba... more »

Bell's and sycophants' criticism of von Neumann's hidden-variable no-go theorem is misguided
John Preskill wrote a blog post, Bell’s inequality 50 years later, which argues that "without Bell, the broader significance of quantum entanglement would have unfolded quite differently and perhaps not until much later." Preskill concludes: "We really owe Bell a great debt." *Is every catchy song or paper written using modern tools "intrinsically original"?* Your humble correspondent is much less convinced that the 1964 Bell's paper was either new or pushing the physics research in the right direction. It is a nice undergraduate textbook example very explicitly showing the diffe... more »

A Critical Week For OPEC And The Price Of Oil
*All Eyes On Oil: What Will OPEC Do This Week? -- CNN Money* While Americans are chomping down on turkey and pie this week, everyone involved in the energy world will be closely watching the Thanksgiving Day meeting of the OPEC in Vienna, Austria. Oil prices have tumbled dramatically in recent weeks. Oil now trades below $80 a barrel and most Americans can buy gas for their cars for under $3 a gallon. The question is how OPEC will respond. So far, energy producing nations and companies haven't scaled back product even though it's pretty clear there's an over supply of oil on the... more »

Frozen Whipped Cream for Hot Chocolate with Stephen's Hot Cocoa Giveaway
There are few things I find more festive than a warm cup of hot chocolate. It reminds me of skiing all day, caroling and seeing Christmas lights. It is the perfect warm accent to any holiday party. When I am making hot chocolate for a large holiday party, I love having little dollops of whipped cream, measured out and frozen to add to the hot chocolate bar. They are easy to make, on a piece of parchment paper using a can of whipped cream. Simply pipe the whipped cream into cute little towers and freeze. Then you can add them to your hot cocoa or keep them in an airtight container ... more »

Chicago Can Still Replace Rahm Emanuel With A Mayor Who Cares About People
Last spring and summer there was a hopeful stir as polling showed several candidates could beat Rahm Emanuel's bid for reelection. For various reasons, none of them decided to make the run. But as of last month, another candidate has stepped up to the plate, Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia. Chicago Teachers Union and other progressive groups have already endorsed him. Herman Goering explained how it worked when he was on trial at Nuremberg: “Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger…it works the same in any country.” And Harper has taken his cue from Goering: When Cpl.... more »

What is the Israeli national interest in Nigeria? 1) Oil 2) General African Destabilisation 3) White Supremacy. *"Why should we not form a secret society with but one object: the furtherance of the British Empire and the bringing of the whole uncivilized world under British rule for the recovery of the United States for making the Anglo-Saxon race but one Empire. How Israel and the US love the Kurds. Let me count the ways....
So, I came across one article yesterday, another today, while looking for yet more facts to solidify the case that* the Kurds are not victims,* having no one one their side, as proclaimed by the perception managing media. This false presentation has taken in others. Has fooled them. Has caused them to believe lies. And take cheap shots at myself. Tsk. Tsk.I had thought these persons were more savvy to media manipulations. Alas..... that was not the case. *Another curiosity? * Is it me or am I the only blogger, or one of a very few that are pointing out the collusion between Israel... more »
3D printing: giving a hand to the world
This is what happens when two men decide to NOT patent their invention, to NOT monopolize and hide their invention away in secrecy, to NOT to fear the "establishment" who might not like their choices. Instead to choose to insure that what they are doing is accessible to anyone anywhere.... For too long we have lived in a world of greed and control. For too long we have been blinded by the rhetoric that any new invention must be protected by patents and lawyers, must be hoarded by those who have a blinding need to absolutely control every piece of it. It has been programmed into our ... more »

News Reminder: Biden Admits U.S. Allies Funding ISIS
And do we think the CIA is not involved in this funding, directing, and training ISIS as well? This serves two primary purposes: 1) Helps take down the Syrian government which is an ally of Iran and an enemy of the brutal regime in Saudi Arabia 2) Creates the vicious new boogey-man ISIS that then allows the US to re-send thousands of troops back into Iraq and to further justify destroying Syria. This whole bunch is as corrupt and evil as can be.......
So why should we care about Sutton? [updated]
In our office, sexual harassment is marked out of 10. There are people who care about Roger Sutton, about Ian Rennie and Gery Brownlee the rest of the big-government crew drawn wriggling into the light by the complaint about Sutton, about the “debate” about sexual harassment it has supposedly begin and the “conversation” about state services procedures it has apparently inspired. I am not among them. Nor is anyone around my office. Sutton should be shamed not for what he allegedly did in the privacy of CERA’s Christchurch offices, but for what he and CERA’s officer’s have done ... more »
Will His Mania To Destroy The U.S. Post Office Be Ron Johnson's Final Undoing?
I suppose once the likes of right-wing steeped-in-profound-ignorance sociopaths Joni Ernst (R-IA), Cory Gardner (R-CO) and James Lankford (R-OK) show up scores will change, but right now ProgressivePunch rates Wisconsin nut-case Ron Johnson as owner of the worst voting record in the Senate. It's not just that his 0.48 Lifetime crucial vote score is significantly lower than even radical right freaks like Ted Cruz (2.60), Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III (2.36) and Mike Lee (6.31), it's that when you take the partisan lean of states into account, Johnson is the senator least likely... more »
Neil Findlay for Scottish Labour Leader
Recall the Scottish independence referendum? Can you remember the panic when a few polls put the Yes camp in the lead? Politics is a fickle business but surely that was burned on every Westminster psyche. Dozens of Labour MPs should remember it. They tramped north of Hadrian's Wall to tell the fine people of Scotland to stay with us. We're better together because of reasons, etc. One of those MPs was Ivan Lewis, whose trip to Glasgow was serenaded by the *Imperial March* of *Star Wars* fame. I'm sure he looks fondly back on it now. I also suppose he remembers why he went. Scotland ... more »
America Unearthed and Davy Crockett Survives the Alamo
I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and that was the reason that some months ago I posted a column about *America Unearthed* that was mostly positive. Scott Wolter, the forensic geologist who is the host, had touched on some subjects with which I had a passing interest but no real in depth knowledge. He seemed to be interested in finding the truth and the story of the great wall in Texas, this massive thing that some believed had been built in ancient times by a race of giants, ended with his conclusion it was a bizarre natural formation. That seemed to suggest an unbias... more »
Nov. 23: a catch up on the news there wasn't time for....
The first story is one that didn't appear in the Irving papers because it just happened on Saturday. (It'll be interesting to see if it does appear.) Defence Minister Rob Nicholson is planning integration of Canadian and American armed forces for mutual defence. He says this would be no threat to Canada. Like hell it wouldn't. 1. American governments have a broad interpretation of the word "defence". Whenever they invade some small and distant country to please some billionaire, it's "defence". In just the recent past, it has had to defend itself against evil Vietnamese who, I supp... more »
