Paul Craig Roberts' reflection on the meaning of Thanksgiving: "When Americans celebrate Thanksgiving, they don’t know what they are celebrating." "Thanksgiving became a national holiday with the completion of the Reconstruction of the South after the War of Northern Aggression and the extermination of the Plains Indians by the Union generals in the 1870s. This taints Thanksgiving as a celebration of the preservation and expansion of the American Empire and accurately reflects the goal of the political forces behind Lincoln."

A Veteran Teacher Turned Coach Shadows 2 Students for 2 days – a Sobering Lesson Learned

[image: http://www.wakingtimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Students-School-Education.jpg] The clear take home is actually two fold. It really does not work that well at all and worse we have scant clue of how to do all this better. The result is gimmicks aside a default system that teachers accept because it is easiest for them to execute. I do suspect that we need to think in terms of specific brain developmental and measurement targeting specific mental skills. We know already that this works and works well enough though at different rates for individuals. A simple ... more »

Benefits of Magnesium

I do think that it is all good but that the necessary supply can be easily achieved by attention to our diets. The alternatives are all chancy if only because we cannot measure needs properly. The last sentence tells us the story. All good otherwise. I am not sure how much magnesium is bioavailable through sea salt but it is worth keeping in mind as well. The take home here is that any proper diet should provide ample magnesium. . *Benefits of Magnesium Are Far Greater Than Previously Imagined* *By Dr Mercola, www.mercola.com | November 5, 2014* *http://www.theepochti... more »

Is Avocado the Perfect Food?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 12 hours ago
Not quite of course but it certainly is a serious addition which is not true for most foods. It is easy to imagine avocados been a staple at least as it is in Mexico where it joins corn and beans to provide an exceptional diet. with that everything else is a bonus. What is certain is that it is a sufficient fat provider to the diet of any vegetarian and needs to be respected. What this actually suggests is that we are overdue to discover a proper perfect diet protocol that delivers ample nutrients and energy. Custom and tradition only goes so far and correction throug... more »

The Quest for the Fountain of Youth

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 12 hours ago
This revisits an old legend and since it was respected in its day it is well; worth revisiting. I suspect however that the phenomena can be explained by biological oxygen rich water. Such water will hold around one through five percent of biologically available oxygen which provides the imbiber sufficient oxygen to divert the oxygen demand produced by the digestive system. That happens to be a third of total demand, thus the imbiber immediately is full of energy that usually lasts at least a couple of hours. We have actually used it to replace oxygen tanks for the elderly an... more »

Federal Plans to Suck Remaining Air from Teacher Education Classrooms

Jim Horn at Schools Matter - 13 hours ago
Last summer corporate lackey, Arne Duncan, acknowledged that "testing issues today are sucking the oxygen out of the room in a lot of schools." In order to make his statement truer still, Gates and the USDOE just announced a 60 day comment period on a plan to use K-12 student test scores to grade teacher preparation programs. With student assistance tied to K-12 student test scores where teacher candidates eventually end up teaching, the most obvious effect will be that prospective students applying to university programs that send lots of students to poorer schools will n... more »

ISIS Supplying Half of all Afghan Heroin Entering Europe

*Interesting?* Russia is making this claim and of course that means it is to be ridiculed. But, knowing the history of drug running, CIA and the funding black ops I can't see how this can be dismissed or derided. Bearing in mind that by all appearances ISIS seems to be NATO covert army. The ability for it to move mass quantities of heroin from Afghanistan (occupied largely by the US under that giant NATO umbrella) to fund it's operations at an arms length seems in keeping with other sordid episodes in history of this type Iran/Contra of course comes to mind. Heavenletter #5114 Imagine a Great Being Unaware of His Greatness November 25, 2014 God said: In Oneness, We are. We are never separated, and you are never alone. In ignorance, however, so fraught with fear and other sundries, you may feel and think you are alone on Planet Earth, as if stranded here on a deserted island. Here youare, a Great Being unaware of your Greatness. This sense of loneliness applies to the Big Timers and the two-bit Timers. It applies to those seen as the Highest in the Land and to those who are seen as the Lowest of the Low. This applies to those p... more »

Clumsy CIA Drone Strikes Kill 41 Bad Guys Over A Span of Years, Angry Afghan Mother Kills 25 Bad Guys In One Battle Alone

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 21 hours ago
The two articles below sum up the U.S/NATO fiasco in Afghanistan. An Afghan mother, with little means but great motivation, put the Afghan army, NATO, and the CIA drone operators to shame. She and a few other family members killed 25 Taliban members in a seven-hour battle to avenge her son's murder. The Taliban will only be defeated by fed-up local Afghans like her, not indifferent foreigners who created the conditions that gave rise to this barbaric group, and religious radicalism in general. The Afghan army will fold just like the Iraqi army did when the U.S. leaves and the T... more »

Is a Fox News gig in Darren Wilson's future?

Marc McDonald at BeggarsCanBeChoosers.com - 22 hours ago
*By MARC McDONALD* There are three things in life that are inevitable. Death, taxes, and the fact that Fox News loves white males who are involved racially divisive situations. For evidence of that, look no further than the likes of the right-wing ex-cop Mark Fuhrman, who has made regular appearances on Sean Hannity's program. Fuhrman, in fact, rode his notoriety from the O.J. trial to fame and fortune (and a lucrative book-writing and radio talk show career). Fox News has long embraced characters like Fuhrman. It all feeds into the network's unstated dog-whistle view that *white m... more »

Fittingly named the Horsehead Nebula, it is some 1,500 light-years distant, embedded in the vast Orion cloud complex. * Click image for larger size.* About five light-years "tall", the dark cloud is cataloged as Barnard 33 and is visible only because its obscuring dust is silhouetted against the glowing red emission nebula IC 434. *"Look To This Day"* "Look to this day for it is life, the very life of life. In its brief course lie all the realities and truths of existence, the joy of growth , the splendor of action, the glory of power. For yesterday is but a memory, And tomorrow is only a vision. But today well lived makes every yesterday a memory of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day..." - Kalidasa

The Poet: Carl Sandburg, "What Shall He Tell That Son?"

"What Shall He Tell That Son?" "A father sees a son nearing manhood. What shall he tell that son? 'Life is hard; be steel; be a rock.' And this might stand him for the storms and serve him for humdrum and monotony and guide him amid sudden betrayals and tighten him for slack moments. 'Life is a soft loam; be gentle; go easy.' And this too might serve him. Brutes have been gentled where lashes failed. The growth of a frail flower in a path up has sometimes shattered and split a rock. A tough will counts. So does desire. So does a rich soft wanting. Without rich wanting nothing arrives. Tel... more »

*“In The Sweet By And By”* by Chet Raymo “In the Bahamas there's a saying: Everbody wanna go to hebben, but nobody wanna die. I suppose you could find the same expression anywhere in the world. It's one of those universal axioms, a cognitive dissonance the human species has learned to live with. We want to live forever, but there's always that nagging fear that death is final. When someone comes along promising eternal life, we are quick to jump on board, to buy into the program, to make our Pascal's Wager with a generous tithe. The Keys of the Kingdom have always been the ultimate...more »

*“The Black Man (A True Story)”* by Paulo Coelho "We are at the restaurant of a German University. A red haired student, and undeniably German, takes her tray and sits down at her table. She then realizes she has forgotten her cutlery and gets up again to pick it up. Coming back, she sees with astonishment that a black man, possibly sub-Saharan by his appearance, is sitting there and is eating from her tray. Straight away, the young woman feels lost and stressed, but immediately changes her thought and presumes that the African is not familiar with European customs concerning priva...more »

"The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass through this world. There will most likely be no ticker-tape parades for us, no monuments created in our honor. But that does not lessen our possible impact, for there are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along; people who will appreciate our compassion, our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act... more »

Life is sculpted on a moment-to-moment basis. Every one of the thoughts we think, the words we speak, and the actions we take contributes to the complex quality and character of the universe’s unfolding. When George Harrison was sued for plagiarising the Chiffons – when Men at Work were sued for plagiarising the melody of a Boy Scout song – when Radiohead are sued for plagiarising Albert Hammond, or Coldplay for plagiarising Joe Satriani -- the common response is “Look, there are only so many musical notes, chords and riffs that a person can string together into a song.” But while that’s technically true, it’s practically just bollocks.
