furloughed civilian employees of the military back to work. This decision,
according to the *Washington Post*, will "significantly" lessen the impact
of Shutdown USA: The Movie.
When a shutdown's impact is "significantly lessened" simply because the
workforce in one single department is now back on the job, it suddenly

Stephen Harper finally noticed in Malaysia
Sunday October 6 Stephen Harper did meet Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak.
Prime Minister Razak of Malaysia has stated that Malaysian state-owned oil
company, Petronas, will invest billions in Canadian liquefied natural gas
development. Now the fun starts as more pollution will be introduced in
Canada. Besides China, now Malaysia is going to spend money in Canada.

to the government shutdown, EEOC's website is down. NLRB's websiteis
also down. You might assume the fact the government is shut down means
your deadline for filing claims against your employer is extended. You'd
be
wrong (maybe). If you have a deadline coming up soon for filing a charge
of
discrimination with EEOC or a charge against employer with NLRB, you may
still have to (somehow) get your filing done in time.

Just when you think he's hit bottom, he keeps going.
First bit: Fournier believes that Republican demands (about ACA) are
unreasonable, but that Barack Obama should negotiate with them. Fournier
entirely ignores the argument against negotiations: that rewarding
hostage-taking is a mistake, and that therefore Obama should not be willing
to give anything at all on the debt limit (or, for that matter, on a
short-term CR, as opposed to a full year funding bill). There are

Effective immediately, for the first time in his life, Frank Meyers has no
legal right to step foot on “his” property. On Oct 2 the Canadian
Department of National Defence erected “No Trespassing” signs around the

terms of the lease: Couple evicted from home that they own because it sits
on Federal land. Ditto for an inn which has been operating on Federal Land

Cube-shaped robots that can flick, skip and assemble themselves into
different shapes have been unveiled by scientists at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT). The small robots, known as M-Blocks, have no

For a Citizen's Basic Income
I've been a fan of a basic income for everyone for some time. And now
there's a European Union-wide campaign agitating for one. As Switzerland
will be hosting a referendum on a 2,500 franc monthly income for every
adult (about £1,720/month), there's no time like the present to whip up
support for it. And pioneering work in Namibia shows it's not just
something rich countries could indulge.

I've somewhat wondered where the "society" publication is for American
Eugenicists. They must have a club or association of some kind. It seems
all professionals do--birds of a feather and such.
This country in particular has striven to plan its future on a very grand

Thirteen of us held an hour-long vigil yesterday at Bath Iron Works in
Maine as the workers knocked off at noon on the Saturday shift. We lined
up in front of BIW headquarters on Washington Street with our signs and
banners. Just before the whistle blew we moved down the street and stood
across from a gate where workers came through. Two of the folks from the
Smilin' Trees Disarmament Farm stood by the gate and offered flyers.

How the Eurozone Might End
Yves here. This post by Yanis Varoufakis gives a plausible scenario as to
how the Eurozone could unravel. Most commentators believe the country that
is most likely to rupture it is Italy. Italy has a primary budget surplus and
also has a high saving rate, with the result that even under the gold-standard-like
Eurozone, it still funds most of its debt issuance internally. Notice how
quickly the Eurozone could fracture once one country exits.
