Will The GOP Shut-Down-The-Government Strategy Further Decimate California Republicans?
Trends start in California
Obama beat Romney 6,493,924 (59%) to 4,202,127 (38%) in California. Obama
won every county with a substantial population except Orange and
Riverside-- and Riverside was a 49-49% tie. Of California's 53
congressional districts, Obama won 41 districts (including 3 with
Republican congressmen, Jeff Denham, David Valadao and Gary Miller) and of
the 12 Romney won, Obama was within striking distance in 3, all occupied by

what i'm reading: the maze runner, a youth novel
There's a subgenre of youth books in which young people are cast into an
alien and dangerous world, where they must struggle to understand their
purpose, struggle to survive. If you remember your own adolescence, the
metaphor should be obvious.
These books are often characterized as nihilistic or depressing, but I find
that's generally the thoughts of people who haven't read the book. While a
survival book may be frightening and sometimes violent, it usually offers
positive messages about what it takes to survive. Young heroes find inner

For a Citizen's Basic Income
I've been a fan of a basic income for everyone for some time. And now
there's a European Union-wide campaign agitating for one. As Switzerland

something rich countries could indulge.

This country in particular has striven to plan its future on a very grand
scale. What better way than through forced education (for the good of the

How the Eurozone Might End
Yves here. This post by Yanis Varoufakis gives a plausible scenario as to
how the Eurozone could unravel. Most commentators believe the country that
is most likely to rupture it is Italy. Italy has a primary budget surplus and
also has a high saving rate, with the result that even under the gold-standard-like
Eurozone, it still funds most of its debt issuance internally. Notice how
quickly the Eurozone could fracture once one country exits.

More Republican Blackmail-- This Time They're Threatening A Worldwide Economic Collapse
Boehner has been widely quoted in the media saying that he will not allow a
default. Apparently, he will be precisely as capable of delivering on that
as he has been on not allowing a government shutdown. Several sources
inside the House Republican caucus have confirmed that the memo obtained by
the *National Review* of Boehner's strategy is accurate-- or at least was
accurate as of Friday night. It's breathtaking and absolutely guaranteed to
bring about a default and possible economic collapse… if they stick to it.

A Sad And Sorry State Of Affairs
Susan Delacourt's new book, *Shopping For Votes: How Politicians Choose Us
And We Choose Them* is creating quite a stir. Delacourt's central thesis is
that Canadians no longer act as citizens -- with rights and
responsibilities -- but as consumers, who are motivated by self interest,
not the national interest. Jeffrey Simpson wrote in yesterday's *Globe and
Mail* that:
It is a depressing book for anyone who believes in a broad public interest
and the capacity of political parties (and the media) to even discuss that
interest. It is more depressing still because this state of aff... more »

A Labour Party activist posing as a disinterested voter
We've done quite a few posts about BBC One's *Question Time*, that weekly
ordeal for many politically-minded people of a right-wing persuasion.
The outstanding problem seems to be the apparently unrepresentative nature
of the audiences, and it's a problem *Question Time *needs to address.
Given that even someone like James Delingpole accepts that the makers of *Question
Time *do try to get an audience that holds a cross-section of views, why is
it that - like this week's edition - that audience so often gives every

Islamic Tolerance: Myth and Reality - The Commentator
' Warraq himself argues, against the politically-correct view, that Muslim
hatred of Jews goes back to the origins of Islam. The persecution of Jews,
and also Christians, stems from the precepts and principles in Islamic
texts: the Koran, the Sira (the biographies of Muhammad), the Hadith, the
Tradition (records of the deeds and sayings of Muhammad), and classical
Koranic commentaries.
Equally significant is Warraq's answer to the fashionable argument that the
West in the past and Israel in the present are responsible for the troubles
of the Muslim world. He refers to the events of... more »

I never took chemistry and I feel that’s a shame. I actually wish I had. I
was a bit intimidated by math in high school. I signed up for calculus and
after about the first day or two I felt that it was so overwhelming that I

pretty helpful given my chosen career. But I wish I had not allowed myself
to be intimidated out of taking science and math courses.

about they ask the damn GOPers what exactly they're willing to compromise
