What Mattered This Week?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 53 seconds ago
I'll be boring and just go with the end of the shutdown, along with the end of the debt limit threat. Not sure what I have that didn't matter...I suppose I don't really think that the specific votes among mainstream Republicans on ending the shutdown mattered all that much. That is, it mattered a lot that it ended, but it's relatively unlikely that anyone will draw a primary (or a more significant primary) only because of a "yes" vote, or take a hit in the general because of a "no" vote, all else equal. It's possible, but unlikely. That's what I have, but there was a lot going on. W... more »

“Breaking Bad”: Through a Literary Lens

GOP Surrender Monkeys Say They Won't Shut Down The Government Against-- Suicide Caucus Says It Intends To Do Just That

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 hour ago
Both Boehner and McConnell have tried reassuring voters-- who have turned massively against the Republican Party in poll after poll-- that the GOP will not shut down the government again in January. McConnell was clear in his interview with Robert Costa for the right-wing *National Review* that he knew Cruz's strategy would fail all along but that he didn't have the clout with his own caucus-- let alone in a dysfunctional, out-of-control House-- to stop it. Stephen Harper skipped out on Parliament the day after the throne speech. He'd spent the last one hundred and eighteen days avoiding the legislature -- and he needed an excuse to keep avoiding it. Saudia Arabia campaigned for an won a seat for the first time on the UN Security Council ( a two year term ) and then rejects the seat ! What are the Saudis up to ? Well , for one thing , they used the opportunity presented to shove the seat up the collective rears of the UN for not supporting Saudia Arabia's geopolitical goals ! Second , this is a slap at the US of course ( you know we pushed for the Saudis to get the seat ) and commentary about double standards in the Security Council falls on the shoulders of not just Russia and China but also the US ( Iran and Syria in focus here . ) Third , the Saudis also slapped Israel on their nuclear and other WMD arsenal - inconsistent for Israel to have such weapons if the stated goal of the UN Security Council is a WMD free Middle East ! Fouth and finally , does this just free the Saudis to continue with their mischief in Syria and with Iran ?

Chase Bank's recent covert imposition on its small-business depositors is a warning that "the end is near." Not the end for the banks and banksters, rather for their depositors who they will rob. The 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act that had separated depository and investment banking now allows banks to commingle their deposits and investments. And because of the Dodd-Frank Act, banks can no longer be bailed out by the government. So the next crash will result in Cyprus-style “bail-ins,” meaning (legal!) confiscation of depositor funds in order to recapitalize the failed (criminal) banks. The FDIC doesn't have enough money to reimburse more than 0.25% of the victims, which may include you if you don’t take precautionary action soon. To learn more about this impending outrage, go here:

Funny Business In Mississippi-- At Least For Democrats

As of June 30, Mississippi senior Senator Thad Cochran had only raised $773,953, not much for a U.S. Senator. It gave rise to some talk that he might be thinking of retirement. He was born in 1937 and by the end of his next term he'd be 82. Elected in 1978, he's the second most senior Republican in the Senate. And, for a mainstream conservative like Cochran, a Cruz-ified Republican caucus can't be much fun. But when you realize that the last time he was up for reelection he only spent $518,625, you have to reconsider his lackadaisical fundraising as proof he might be retiring. Co... more »

Brigette DePape -- who held up that Stop Harper sign during the last throne speech -- has greeted this week's throne speech with the scorn it deserves: Prime Minister Stephen Harper is spending over a billion dollars on a Spy Castle made of shiny glass windows, the most expensive Canadian government building ever constructed. Meanwhile, he continues to cut services that the middle class values. Simply look at federal health cuts, which will total $36 billion over a decade. She understands what is behind Harper's attempt to rebrand himself as Captain Consumer: The government bo... more »

Two tales of RCMP Excessive Response Teams

What was the point of this exactly? Sending in snipers in camo with dogs to crawl through the grass towards a group of unarmed people blockading a road because they fear the wholly-owned Canadian subsidiary of a Houston, Texas exploration company is setting up to frack their land. Oddly enough, Canadian law supports the rights of the foreign company to frack over those of the people attempting to protect their community from it. Hence the blockade protest, ongoing since Sept 30 when Elsipogtog First Nation Chief Aaron Sock issued the company an eviction notice not recognized ... more »

Farrell "Credit Suisse’s new Global Wealth Report reminds us of the 1790s when inequality ignited the French Revolution and 40,000 met the guillotine. Today, Credit Suisse data reveal that just 1% own 46% of the world, while two-thirds of the world’s people have less than $10,000 wealth. Credit Suisse predicts a world with 11 trillionaires in a couple generations, as the rich get richer and the gap widens. Can this trend continue? Or will it trigger an “economic guillotine?” Nobel economist Joseph Stiglitz, aut... more »
