An Exchange on Scientific Authoritarianism

noreply@blogger.com (Roger Pielke, Jr.) at Roger Pielke Jr.'s Blog - 3 minutes ago
Last month Björn-Ola Linnér and I took part in an exchange on the pages of a major Swedish newspaper, Dagens Nyheter. In an effort to bring the discussion to a broader audience, we now have English versions of the exchange. Our initial piece was motivated in part by the Swedish Global Challenges Foundation which is advocating for a "global legal system" -- that is, a form of global government. Both Linnér and I are supportive of institutions of global governance. The key questions that we see involve not *whether*such institutions are needed (the are, and many already exist) but *... more »

Read Stuff, You Should

Happy Birthday to Erin Moran, 53. Good stuff 1. I absolutely agree with the premise of Ezra Klein's post: Democrats should give up on the goal of raising revenues. Trickier, however, is how to do that. But he's exactly right about this. 2. The latest on 2014, from David Wasserman. Very reasonable. 3. Sarah Binder's postmortem on the shutdown deal. 4. Paul Waldman is very good on the Robert Costa phenomenon. 5. And another good one from Ross Douthat on Boehner.

CBS: Grenade used in Mexican cartel shootout linked to ATF operation - why pursue a war against terror tactics if such a war doesn't include our neighbor Mexico and we allow guns and genades to " walk " across the border anyway ?

CBS: Grenade used in Mexican cartel shootout linked to ATF operation POSTED AT 8:41 AM ON OCTOBER 18, 2013 BY ED MORRISSEY It’s not Operation Fast and Furious, but another ATF operation that ended up doing nothing about weapons smuggling across the border. The ATF knew about Jean-Baptiste Kingery and tracked him for a long period of time, collecting “significant evidence” of his arms trafficking, including grenades. They didn’t prosecute him, though, and now at least one of the weapons linked to Kingery was used in a battle in Guadalajara between Mexican cartel members and the pol... more »

What Did The Republicano Temper Tantrum Really Cost The Taxpayers They Profess To Care About?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 45 minutes ago
The GOP shutdown may indeed be dead-- at least for now-- and Obamacare is still being birthed but that GOP shutdown cost the taxpayers something like $24 billion, killed a million jobs, raised unemployment, reduced the GDP, left us without food safety inspectors or even nuclear regulatory inspectors and put our government on a very economically precarious and dangerous credit downgrade watch. Yesterday Nancy Pelosi asked her Republican colleagues if their infantile and pointless temper tantrum was worth charging the taxpayers $24 billion dollars. Brigette DePape -- who held up that Stop Harper sign during the last throne speech -- has greeted this week's throne speech with the scorn it deserves: Prime Minister Stephen Harper is spending over a billion dollars on a Spy Castle made of shiny glass windows, the most expensive Canadian government building ever constructed. What was the point of this exactly? Sending in snipers in camo with dogs to crawl through the grass towards a group of unarmed people blockading a road because they fear the wholly-owned Canadian subsidiary of a Houston, Texas exploration company is setting up to frack their land. Oddly enough, Canadian law supports the rights of the foreign company to frack over those of the people attempting to protect their community from it. John Banks’s electoral fraud

The story was buried under a mountain of lurid mayoral stories, but I did read this week that John Banks, the Minister for Rhyming Slang, stood himself down from ministerial office after being indicted in a private action for electoral fraud. I immediately assumed the obvious. I assumed it was because a disgruntled voter had taken Banks to court the courts after discovering the ACT Party had defrauded voters, and supporters, in pretending to be a freedom party. And because he had defrauded the ACT Party hierarchy in pretending to be both a freedom-lover and a politician of integri... more »

But what evidence we have strongly suggests he was. There’s plenty of blame to go around for the shutdown and debt-limit fiasco, but any account which focuses mainly on Boehner is probably letting both the moderates and the mainstream conservatives — in other words, most House Republicans — off far too easy. There’s no doubt the National Party under John Key surfed a wave of support unprecedented in MMP times—riding polls that showed them over the journey easily able to govern alone, if they wanted to. Key’s own personal popularity with the electorate bought the Party enormous political capital, enough popularity to allow Key and Co to climb out from under a series of mini-scandals with little more than a smile and wave. Diane Ravitch and Reformers' Feelings

John Thompson at Schools Matter - 1 day ago
When Diane Ravitch, in *Reign of Error*, discusses charter schools, she makes it clear that not all charters impose a “no-excuses” mentality. When discussing the reformers’ public relations machine and its “well-honed message,” she analyses their language and writes, “when they speak of “no-excuses,” they mean boot camp culture.” In a rational world, Ravitch’s careful distinctions, as in the above sentences, would be noted. After all, she has decades of experience as a scholar of unsurpassed distinction. Ravitch is attacked, however, because she bilingual. She can easily switch ba... more »

Bread And Circuses

Yesterday's throne speech offered little tidbits to various types of voters -- cheaper cell phone and cable rates and the right to carry beer across provincial borders. It's a time honoured political strategy: when the news isn't good, invite the plebeians to a circus. The truth is, Tom Walkom writes, that -- when it comes to sound economic management -- the news for Conservatives isn't good: The truth is that Canada’s economy is not doing well. Official unemployment may be hovering around the 7 per cent mark (last month it was 6.9 per cent). But official unemployment figures do n... more »

In a boon for military contractors, the Obama administration is relaxing controls on military exports, allowing some U.S.-made military parts to flow to nearly any country in the world with little oversight. ProPublica reports that beginning this week, thousands of parts for military aircraft can be sent freely around the world, even to some countries currently under U.N. arms embargoes. Previously, military firms had to register with the State Department and obtain a license for each export deal. That allowed U.S. officials to screen for issues including possible human rights vio... more »

A picture of desperate confusion; the Throne speech

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 1 day ago
Yesterday's Throne speech paints a picture of a government in confusion, desperate to regain the favour of the Canadian public. The government that came to power professing the power of the market promises increased government interference in business, more government giveaways. This is the Throne Speech we expect of a Conservative government readying itself for a Liberal government to come in and clean up its decade of financial irresponsibility.
