Syria is entering a new stage of secular-on-extremist violence, with the

according to a number of experts.

Mint the coin
Screw the nattering nabobs of conventional wisdom. The platinum coin is a
valid idea well worthy of discussion:
It's not that there's no value in knowing what's possible or likely, it's
that it isn't an argument against the value of the proposition. Most things
which should happen don't. We talk about them anyway.
So what if it's tied up in the courts for years? It's a legal solution. It

by Mary Oliver
“ I worried a lot. Will the garden grow, will the rivers
flow in the right direction, will the earth turn
as it was taught, and if not how shall
I correct it?
Was I right, was I wrong, will I be forgiven,
can I do better?
Will I ever be able to sing, even the sparrows
can do it and I am, well,
hopeless.
Is my eyesight fading or am I just imagining it,
am I going to get rheumatism,
lockjaw, dementia?
Finally I saw that worrying had come to nothing.
And gave it up. And took my old body
and went out into the morning,
and sang.”

Chile: Uncanny Winged Creatures Over Santiago de Chile*
On 29 September around 21:00 hours near Bustamante Park in the downtown
area, a strange flying creature was seen flying from one tree to another.
Its size was estimated at around 2 meters tall and shaped like a manta ray.

disconcerting flying being sighting, does not wish to disclose his identity

OUR MOTHER EARTH FROM SPACE
As we move into Keep Space for Peace Week let's get an overview of what it
means to be living on our little Mother Earth spaceship.
Our consciousness must evolve so that we see that all life on Earth - all
the people, the animals, the plant life, the water, air - is sacred and
spiritually connected. There are no national borders on our planet.
As we move into space we must think about what kind of seed we take with us
from our planet. A good seed or a bad seed?
Do we want to take the seed of greed, war and violence with us into the
heavens?
As we learn to love our Mother Earth ... more »

Consumers First. Really?
John Ivison recently reported that the Harper government is going to
announce a "Consumers First" agenda in the upcoming throne speech. Rick
Smith writes* *that, if there is one person the Harper government hasn't
stood up for, it's the consumer:
Guided by the idea that Ottawa needs to get out of the way of business,
Harper has been trumpeting the mantra of red-tape cutting since first
elected in 2006.
What this has really meant are cuts to safety inspections and costly
adherence to the wisdom of deregulation. Hardly the building blocks of a
“consumers first” agenda.

Good stuff -- all on one question, today:
1. Why is the Republican Party broken? Regular readers know my answers. But
worth considering the alternatives. It's 40 years of frustration!, says
Ross Douthat.
2. It's George W. Bush!, says Dan Larison.
3. It's the end of the Cold War!, says Matt Yglesias.
I should say: of the three, I think Douthat's is the most interesting one

Breakthrough Institute on Cheap Nuclear Power
Low cost, abundant, carbon free energy that can be quickly available is the
key to averting a climate disaster. Wind and solar energy are unreliable

what it was.
