Almost daily I see reports, photos, and videos of growing police brutality
across the US. The video is one of the worst yet.
This kind of thing happens(ed) regularly in the war zones of Iraq and
Afghanistan where the US military has free reign over the public. Then
these soldiers come home and many of them get jobs working for local police
departments or jails/prisons. They bring the brutality of the war zone
with them.

The Ainu Saga
Once upon a time, I was flipping through an encyclopedia of
hunter-gatherers, and came to the Ainu section, the wild people of Japan. There
was a photo of a longhaired man, with a long beard, standing knee deep in a
stream, a fish hanging from his spear. I was immediately fascinated. The
image did not blend in with my other images of Japan — images of highly
efficient people who spend their stressful lives indoors, as we do. The

Party Strength and the Shutdown
Mark Schmidt has a very much worth reading piece over at TNR in which he
makes the counterintuitive case that the problem leading to the shutdown is
party weakness, not party strength. I recommend it, but I'd take the same
facts and put it in a different way. To some extent, this is just
terminology, but I think that there's more to it than that; properly
understanding party strength is necessary to understanding what's gone

Crackpot cons in John Boehner's House of Dysfunction (and their paid and
volunteer apologists) are desperately trying to shift the blame for the
govenment shutdown onto the Democrats but anyone who plays the "both sides

*MINOR HINT: It’s on the front page of the Times:* Yesterday, we hung our
head over the pitiful work of our liberal tribe.
At Salon, a tribal leader denounced some outrageous “he said/she said”
reporting about the government shutdown. Despite his claim that everyone’s

In a nutshell Descartes' "proof" is derived from a definition of God!
Simply, God must exist by definition. But that assumes his existence. If it
were true, then "God" is the only thing proven to exist by definition.
There are various versions of the Ontological argument. Descartes' version
differs from that of St Anselm which was, interestingly, referred to in one
of the Indiana Jones movies. Descartes' latter's version, indeed, proceeds
from the definition of the word "God" and is, therefore, problematic from
