Oprah gets religion wrong

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 19 minutes ago
Apparently a group of atheists are upset because Oprah suggested that people feeling awe and mystery were not, in fact, atheists. Hmmmn Well Oprah's view of religion is not exactly standard. Religion is not "feeling spiritual"; religion is a defined set of supernatural beliefs based on traditional and faith about the origin of the universe and, usually, humanity's role in the world. A traditional western view of G-d is not a prerequisite to a religion - a faith of many gods is a religion - but a mere feeling of awe is no more a religion that a feeling of fear or loathing or lust... more »

Last week's throne speech made mention of "polluter pays" legislation. It appears that the Harperites will offer Barack Obama a carrot, if he approves the Keystone XL Pipeline. Two weeks ago Michael Harris wrote a column questioning the competence of Mr. Harper's new Minister of State for Science, Greg Rickford. Rickford responded to the column, claiming that he wanted to "set the record straight." Harris sets out that record, and it illustrates just how fraudulent the Harper government is wh... more »

How big a deal is JP Morgan's 13 Billion settlement concerning mortgage related misconduct ? 4 Billion is non cash - relief to home owners which may be tax deductible . Of the 9 billion cash component , FDIC ( which has been resistant ) may be on the hook for 3.5 billion allegedly relating back to Washington Mutual mortgage securities. Kudos to Ed Demarco of FHFA , for putting and keeping his foot down as long as he could and who appears to have been a major driver of this overall settlement . And how many eyebrows will go up as the continuing issue of the conduct of Jamie Dimon keeps becoming part of the conversation regarding JP Morgan ? When litigation reserves rise to more than 28 billion and perhaps as high as 35 billion , does a Board of Directors with fiduciary duties finally wake up ? When you have a 2.4 billion bank hanging by its petard of a 75 trillion derivative book , does a Board of Directors with fiduciary duties finally wake up ? Does the Board of Directors with fiduciary duties finally wake up and take note of Jamie Dimon allegedly blowing up three times at central bankers ( Ben Bernanke , Mark Carney while the head of the Bank of Canada and the New York Fed ) and being dismissive to Regulators as if he personally was to big to fail ? Will Jamie finally be told he needs to spend more time with his family ?

The Elsipogtog people were trying to stop the land destroying obscenity of "fracking" from poisoning their water and fouling their air. If this ecocidal behaviour isn't stopped dead in its tracks, we're all fucked. The rancid coward, stephen harper, fucked off to Belgium, the day after his snivelling throne speech, partly due to his desire to avoid accountability for his fraudster (and thuggish) Senate picks, but also, no doubt, so that he could hide from the fall-out of... more »

The slow motion shutdown of America

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 17 hours ago
David Dayen has a great piece on how the last GOP shutdown extravaganza was just a side show to the ongoing damage being done by the sequester: You could argue that the recent shutdown inflicted much more damage than sequestration. You would be wrong. Standard and Poor’s estimated that the shutdown cost the economy $24 billion over its 16-day stretch. Sequestration, meanwhile, will be in place for ten years unless Congress does something, and the spending cuts over that time total $1.2 trillion—50 times the economic impact of the shutdown. And that doesn’t include the knock-on effe... more »

Something Stirring In Arkansas-- Besides Just More Republican Party Sedition?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 17 hours ago
James Lee Witt Arkansas freshman Rep. Tom Cotton is one of the most radical right extremists in the House and is considered a major mover-and-shaker in the GOP sabotage of the U.S. government and the American economy. When you hear talk about radicals unwilling to compromise and who are willing to drive the economy right over the cliff, Cotton is foremost among them. So, *of course* the NRSC recruited him to run for the Arkansas Senate seat held by vulnerable ConservaDem Blanche Lincoln Mark Talking Snake Pryor. The good thing about his Senate run is that he'll be gone from the House... more »

2013 TV135: 1 in 14,000 impact in 2032

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 20 hours ago
NASA's Near Earth Object Program finally has another candidate rock whose Torino scale is positive, even though it's just 1 so far. Its name is 2013 TV135. It's been observed for 9 days or so. During the recent hours, the probability of collision on August 26th, 2032 – Witten's 81st birthday (he wishes I would never have used his name in this sentence, but I've already heard this comment from him on 9/11/2001 right after my PhD defense) – has grown from 1 in 48,000 to 1 in 14,000. What is impressive about the object is the diameter, 410 meters. The mass is 90 million tons and the... more »

The Economy: “Brit Hume Outlines Why”

*“Brit Hume Outlines Why”* by Karl Denninger "Y'all ought to watch this folks. Note the derogation and stupidity displayed by Brit. "They see the Republican Party as having utterly failed to stop the drift toward an unfree nation supervised by an overwhelming and bloated bureaucracy." Yep. What Brit didn't mention is what they may or may not recognize - that mathematically what is being done by both Republican and Democrat "mainstream" parties is inevitably going to lead to the ruin of the nation and her people. Politics are all great fun but this is akin to an asteroid t... more »

What Mattered This Week?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 21 hours ago
I'll be boring and just go with the end of the shutdown, along with the end of the debt limit threat. Not sure what I have that didn't matter...I suppose I don't really think that the specific votes among mainstream Republicans on ending the shutdown mattered all that much. That is, it mattered a lot that it ended, but it's relatively unlikely that anyone will draw a primary (or a more significant primary) only because of a "yes" vote, or take a hit in the general because of a "no" vote, all else equal. It's possible, but unlikely. That's what I have, but there was a lot going on. W... more »

“Breaking Bad”: Through a Literary Lens

GOP Surrender Monkeys Say They Won't Shut Down The Government Again-- Suicide Caucus Says It Intends To Do Just That

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 22 hours ago
Both Boehner and McConnell have tried reassuring voters-- who have turned massively against the Republican Party in poll after poll-- that the GOP will not shut down the government again in January. McConnell was clear in his interview with Robert Costa for the right-wing *National Review* that he knew Cruz's strategy would fail all along but that he didn't have the clout with his own caucus-- let alone in a dysfunctional, out-of-control House-- to stop it. He seems to think he does now. In an interview with *The Hill*, he said the Republicans had learned a painful political lesson... more »

It's [a long] part of a post from early last month: Saturday, 7 September 2013 *BBC Breakfast paper reviews* * * Nick Cohen's view that the BBC's liberal, conformist tendencies tend to stifle insightful reporting from people with non-conformist opinions (whether on the Left or the Right) can be generalised and then swung round to tackle the question of why, say, BBC Breakfast's paper reviews are so much more predictable than those on, say, Sky News. Whenever I see paper reviews on Sky News they tend... more »

End of life decisions

The Supreme Court of Canada this week that doctors in Ontario could not unilaterally decide to withdraw ordinary life support from a patient they considered effectively dead. It is important to emphasize (contrary to some media reports) that the decision was based on Ontario statute law and does not apply across the country. Basically the decision held that end of life determinations are to be decided (in Ontario) by the family, or duly appointed personal representatives or a government tribunal specifically empowered to decide. Of course with modern medicine the ghastly risk is t... more »
