And Now, Humorous Credit-Taking

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 54 minutes ago
Earlier I watched a truly great politician moment: "Gang of 14" Senators going to the Senate floor and congratulating themselves for working out an agreement to re-open the government and raise the debt limit. Not *the*agreement; the actual deal was apparently only tangentially related to the Gang's. But an agreement, nonetheless. They are immensely proud of having participated in a process which had little or nothing to do with ending a shutdown almost three weeks in, and raising the debt limit at the last minute. There are basically two ways to take this. One of them, and the one ... more »

That’s what happened in D.C. this Sunday, if the Washington Post can be trusted. That’s why we tend to disagree with Ta-Nehisi Coates’ reaction to the day’s events. Coates began his post as shown below. As a general matter, we agree with his comment about “lone idiots,” although we aren’t inclined to refer to regular people that way and we think his attention is somewhat misplaced. Our main point of disagreement begins with his use of a term that doesn’t... more »

Creating the Conditions and Narrative for a FAILED Geneva II

Judging by the contents of recent NATO news outlet reports it appears a story line, regarding Syria, is being created. The characters are Saudi Arabia. Turkey. The US. But, not Israel. Although the Israeli connections and potential gains in the destruction of Syria are plentiful and acknowledged. Israel seems to be lacking from this fable? Are Tablets Becoming Cheap Ticket Commodity Items?

Martyn Daniels at Brave New World - 4 hours ago
We are starting to see a real convergence in the mobile device market. Tablets are shrinking with 7 inch now becoming a norm and smartphones are growing with 5.5 inch being just the starting point. We are also seeing tablets starting to become real throwaway commodities with prices now falling to under £100 and the big retailers starting to own brand and go after the market. The challenge for many tablets is how they can now maintain a high price ticket yet offer little extra value over their cheap and cheerful counterparts? They have the same operating system, same apps and let’s... more »

Counting Hard

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 4 hours ago
Some foolish liberals, back in 2009-2010, used to blame Barack Obama for things when the actual problem (from their perspective) was that they just didn't have the votes in the Senate. But, to be fair, that was somewhat complicated: Democrats had a large majority, and I can definitely understand the frustration when that large party majority didn't actually work out to a policy majority (in some cases a supermajority, but often just any regular majority) for some specific liberal policies. So if I called them out on it then, I should probably make note of this utter nonsense from s... more »

As befitting the son of Werner Heisenberg, father of the Uncertainty Principle, Martin invokes the stochastic nature of quantum mechanics. Presumably, randomly firing neurons equal free will. There will be no comment here on the only news anyone wants to talk about today. I'm utterly uninterested in what Len Brown did in the (relative) privacy of the Ngati Whatua Room. Because it's not who he screws in private that worries me. What worries me is him screwing over Auckland ratepayers every day right out in the open. How about we focus on that? Guest Post: Debt Ceiling Delusions

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 23 hours ago
*Guest post by Peter Schiff* The popular take on the current debt ceiling stand-off is that the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party has a delusional belief that it can hit the brakes on new debt creation without bringing on an economic catastrophe. While Republicans are indeed kidding themselves if they believe that their actions will not unleash deep economic turmoil, there are much deeper and more significant delusions on the other side of the aisle. Democrats, and the President in particular, believe that continually taking on more debt to pay existing debt is a more respons... more »

Two first episodes fronted by two queer people; Grayson Perry in the old fashioned sense, and Stephen Fry in the modern. Stephen Fry’s reviews are varied. I thought the Sam Wollaston in the Guardian was trying too hard to be amusing, and the Telegraph’s Rupert Hawksley was trying not to be. Notable moments were the gay wedding, which apparently made Stephen tearful: *“**Stephen (Fry) sheds a not totally convincing tear. Come on, you didn't even know them until five minutes ago …” said Sam Wollaston in the Guardian. * His chat with Elton and David was also of interest to that revie... more »

House GOP revolting

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 23 hours ago
And I mean revolting in every sense of the word. I would write about the latest "negotiations" (a/k/a hostage demands) but judging from the contradictory narratives in the media, nobody knows what Boehner's House of Dysfunction is doing, including Boehner and his Crackpot Cons. The maniacal vandals of the Crackpot Caucus are so immersed in their own invented reality, they apparently have no clue that the explosives they're tossing about on Capitol Hill have lit fuses and are about to incinerate the entire world economy. Yet, even though reality based Americans can see the danger, a... more »

The Zinoviev Letter

Phil at A Very Public Sociologist - 23 hours ago
Not another piece involving the *Daily Mail*? I'm afraid so. The so-called 'Zinoviev Letter', that notorious forgery published in October 1924 four days before that year's general election remains the most scurrilous frame up in British political history. Its publication by that most hateful of rags is generally understood to have ensured the first Labour government's tenure of office was very short-lived. I mean, would you accept anything from such a sinister-looking fella? Yet what surprised me was that despite its fearsome reputation, the letter is relatively innocuous. Perhaps ... more »

The Brilliant "Leave Town" Option?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 1 day ago
So far today, over in no-we're- not-completely-bonkers House news, the House Republicans prepared a debt limit/funding bill, took it to a conference meeting, sang "Amazing Grace" (presumably more of a Diane Chambers version than you would find in the House Democrats' caucus, no?), found out they didn't have the votes, and then threatened to pass something and then leave town -- so the Senate and Barack Obama would have to choose to go along or go passed the Thursday-ish deadline. I'll be writing more about this later, but it sounds to me like a brilliant Boehner strategy! After all,... more »
