Are Israel And Turkey On Thin Ice, With Proxy War Ahead? Or Is It All Smoke And Mirrors?
*Who is more despised, from left to right? (Hint: it's a trick question). *
Israel and Washington are throwing mud at Turkey's top spy official, saying
he's in bed with Iran's Ayatollahs. Whether or not this is true can't be
verified at this point. U.S. and Israeli officials are having their
well-trained pets in the press throw their mud for them, and Turkish
officials have yet to forcefully respond to the accusations.

Of course I've known that the Dodgers have not reached the World Series
since 1988. I mean, everyone knows that. And I knew that it's been a while,
of course. But the time gets away from you (or at least from me)...I hadn't
quite realized how long it's been.
What I realized just now is that they're getting real, real, close to the
gap the Giants had between 1962 and 1989.
Fine, Dodgers fans; I'm quite aware that there are differences involved,
beginning with the outcomes of 1962 and 1988. I'm aware that the Dodgers
never went through anything similar to what the Giants did in 1972-1... more »
The Politics of “Fitting” Feminist Theory in IR
(Note: This post is cross-posted at The Research Centre in International
Relations at King’s College, London’s Blog) Feminist theorists have long
made and substantiated the argument that gender “matters” in International

hybrid ways. Gender analysis has been used (in my view effectively) across

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)— “Now that the government shutdown is
over, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) plans to read the Affordable Care Act, he

while now,” Sen. Cruz said of the law often referred to as Obamacare.
“Things have just been so hectic around here lately, I couldn’t get to it.”
The Texas Senator said that he started reading the law this morning and

This comes of keeping nytimes.com at arm's length, owing to the NYT's

Saudia Arabia campaigned for an won a seat for the first time on the UN Security Council ( a two year term ) and then rejects the seat ! What are the Saudis up to ? Well , for one thing , they used the opportunity presented to shove the seat up the collective rears of the UN for not supporting Saudia Arabia's geopolitical goals ! Second , this is a slap at the US of course ( you know we pushed for the Saudis to get the seat ) and commentary about double standards in the Security Council falls on the shoulders of not just Russia and China but also the US ( Iran and Syria in focus here . ) Third , the Saudis also slapped Israel on their nuclear and other WMD arsenal - inconsistent for Israel to have such weapons if the stated goal of the UN Security Council is a WMD free Middle East ! Fouth and finally , does this just free the Saudis to continue with their mischief in Syria and with Iran ?

Chase Bank's recent covert imposition on its small-business depositors is a warning that "the end is near." Not the end for the banks and banksters, rather for their depositors who they will rob. The 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act that had separated depository and investment banking now allows banks to commingle their deposits and investments. And because of the Dodd-Frank Act, banks can no longer be bailed out by the government. So the next crash will result in Cyprus-style “bail-ins,” meaning (legal!) confiscation of depositor funds in order to recapitalize the failed (criminal) banks. The FDIC doesn't have enough money to reimburse more than 1 or 2% of the victims, which may include you if you don’t take precautionary action soon. Funny Business In Mississippi-- At Least For Democrats
As of June 30, Mississippi senior Senator Thad Cochran had only raised
$773,953, not much for a U.S. Senator. It gave rise to some talk that he
might be thinking of retirement. He was born in 1937 and by the end of his
next term he'd be 82. Elected in 1978, he's the second most senior
Republican in the Senate. And, for a mainstream conservative like Cochran,
a Cruz-ified Republican caucus can't be much fun. But when you realize that
the last time he was up for reelection he only spent $518,625, you have to
reconsider his lackadaisical fundraising as proof he might be retiring.

Feudalism 2!
It was famously said that all roads out of capitalism lead directly back to
serfdom!. Any kind of social relation that is not based on complete
atomistic individualism is bound to end in feudal-style obligation. An
interesting (if horrific) aspect of modern capitalism is no capitalist in
their right wants anything to do with it, at least anything to do with the
capitalism that's taught in textbooks and advocated in op-eds.
There is a well-known long term crisis in profitability. If you want to
invest in production your capital has to compete with Chinese production.

Foley was enormously popular within the House during the 1980s, at least

Do you know this man’s familiar face?

*One of the truly great strivers:* Do you know this man’s familiar face?
Here at THE HOWLER, we certainly do! We’ve known Ed Lauter since the early
1970s, since *before* he co-starred with Burt and Burgess and Anthony
Hopkins and even with Ann-Margret.
Co-starred with Ann-Margret! Good God!
Ed was one the world’s great strivers. In the 1970s, it seemed he might be
developing a starring career in the movies. When that didn’t turn out, he
just kept making movies, in co-starring and character roles.
The man has appeared in a million films. We knew that he w... more »

An Exchange on Scientific Authoritarianism
Last month Björn-Ola Linnér and I took part in an exchange on the pages
of
a major Swedish newspaper, Dagens Nyheter. In an effort to bring the
discussion to a broader audience, we now have English versions of the
exchange.
Our initial piece was motivated in part by the Swedish Global Challenges
Foundation which is advocating for a "global legal system" -- that is, a
form of global government. Both Linnér and I are supportive of
institutions
of global governance. The key questions that we see involve not
*whether*such institutions are needed (the are, and many already exist)

Happy Birthday to Erin Moran, 53.
Good stuff
1. I absolutely agree with the premise of Ezra Klein's post: Democrats
should give up on the goal of raising revenues. Trickier, however, is how
to do that. But he's exactly right about this.
2. The latest on 2014, from David Wasserman. Very reasonable.
3. Sarah Binder's postmortem on the shutdown deal.
4. Paul Waldman is very good on the Robert Costa phenomenon.
5. And another good one from Ross Douthat on Boehner.

CBS: Grenade used in Mexican cartel shootout linked to ATF operation
POSTED AT 8:41 AM ON OCTOBER 18, 2013 BY ED MORRISSEY
It’s not Operation Fast and Furious, but another ATF operation that ended
up doing nothing about weapons smuggling across the border. The ATF knew
about Jean-Baptiste Kingery and tracked him for a long period of time,
collecting “significant evidence” of his arms trafficking, including
grenades. They didn’t prosecute him, though, and now at least one of the
weapons linked to Kingery was used in a battle in Guadalajara between

What Did The Republicano Temper Tantrum Really Cost The Taxpayers They Profess To Care About?
The GOP shutdown may indeed be dead-- at least for now-- and Obamacare is
still being birthed but that GOP shutdown cost the taxpayers something like $24
billion, killed a million jobs, raised unemployment, reduced the GDP, left
us without food safety inspectors or even nuclear regulatory inspectors and
put our government on a very economically precarious and dangerous credit
downgrade watch. Yesterday Nancy Pelosi asked her Republican colleagues if
their infantile and pointless temper tantrum was worth charging the
taxpayers $24 billion dollars.

Chase Bank ( part of JP Morgan ) capital controls as to small business customers ( why not ban wire transfers for ALL customers , large Corporations to be consistent ) are not mere " streamlining " and " derisking " as claimed ! What Chase customers have to ask themselves : why is Chase limits withdrawals but not deposits ; why is Chase limiting internnational wire transfers out of the US but no limits apply for wire transfers into the Chase accounts in the US ; why is Chase forcing its business customers to open accounts with far larger amounts of cash on deposit to avoid the capital controls ; why is JP Morgan involved in risky derivative trading if " derisking " is a strategy ?

Across Arctic America
One hundred years ago, the expansion of the white world into the Arctic was
disrupting the traditional culture of the Eskimo people. Into the far
north came guns, traders, missionaries, educators, gold miners, and
industrial hunting and fishing. Also, the diseases of civilization slammed
the wild people who had no resistance to them. Eskimos seemed to be
getting close to extinction.
Knud Rasmussen organized a scientific expedition to learn more about the
Eskimos before they disappeared forever. From 1921 to 1924, they traveled
by dogsled from Greenland to Siberia, covering ab... more »

The last couple of months I see 'readability' of several web-sites
deteriorate. Suddenly they follow the current designer's fad about low and
high (color) *contrast* between background colors and characters as "to
avoid eye strain". I have never heard such blatant and annoying nonsense!
Ever seen a book with white characters printed on gray paper? But did you
see the difficulty printing a book on black paper filling that with white
characters? Wasn't it Google who started with shades of colors to make a
distinction between certain layers of information? See YouTube for
instance. Li... more »
John Banks’s electoral fraud
The story was buried under a mountain of lurid mayoral stories, but I did
read this week that John Banks, the Minister for Rhyming Slang, stood
himself down from ministerial office after being indicted in a private
action for electoral fraud.
I immediately assumed the obvious. I assumed it was because a disgruntled
voter had taken Banks to court the courts after discovering the ACT Party
had defrauded voters, and supporters, in pretending to be a freedom party.
And because he had defrauded the ACT Party hierarchy in pretending to be
both a freedom-lover and a politician of integri... more »

ALL DOWN HILL NOW
We did 17 miles today from Waterville to Belgrade. We are staying at the
country home of a group of great activists who work on water and other
environmental issues here in Maine. Not long after we arrived Tarak Kauff
and Mike Tork, key leaders in national Veterans for Peace, pulled up.
While we were taking a break along the road today a young woman jumped out
of a car and bowed to our group. We recognized her from yesterday as we
entered Waterville. She was at a gas station and as we passed by she stood
with an unforgettable look on her face - near tears. She was wearing a

Elsewhere: Boehner, Cruz, more
Over at the Post this week...I think I'll pull a quote from today's PP post:
We can’t know for sure, at least on the evidence we have right now, whether
Boehner was following the wishes of the majority of his conference on
October 1 or on October 16. But what evidence we have strongly suggests he
was. There’s plenty of blame to go around for the shutdown and debt-limit
fiasco, but any account which focuses mainly on Boehner is probably letting
both the moderates and the mainstream conservatives — in other words, most
House Republicans — off far too easy.

Can Boehner Keep His Speakership-- Even One With No Power?
Yesterday, Nancy Pelosi told reporters, when asked, that she was "sure"
John Boehner would be able to hold onto his Speakership despite muttering
and teeth gnashing on the fringe right of the House Republican caucus. In
fact, even the freak the fringe right wants to replace Boehner with, Tim
Huelskamp, said he is thinks Boehner isn't going anywhere. Another Kansas
subsidiary of Koch Industries, Huelskamp may see a Speaker every time he
looks in the mirror, but he's being realistic about 2013-- not that he's
happy about it. “I’ll just say: the class of ’94 seems to have a lot more

A question for National Party supporters
There’s no doubt the National Party under John Key surfed a wave of support
unprecedented in MMP times—riding polls that showed them over the journey
easily able to govern alone, if they wanted to.
Key’s own personal popularity with the electorate bought the Party enormous
political capital, enough popularity to allow Key and Co to climb out from
under a series of mini-scandals with little more than a smile and wave.
If you’ve been a National Party supporter, it’s been a great ride.
I, those five years of power however, I wonder whether they’ve spent all
that political capital w... more »

On Monday night, Lawrence O’Donnell and Karen Finney responded with a good
solid dose of outrage. At the end of a segment about Sunday’s “Million

Please, bloggers who write about democracy and institutions, read this from
Andrew Rudalevige:
Now, for the record, we do not actually have an executive-centered
presidential system, or even a presidential system. At least, if we do,
that’s not the Constitution’s fault. Congress is Article I, and for a
reason: Congress is a hugely powerful legislative institution. It can act
in almost all areas of governance, overruling the president — given
sufficient unity. Indeed, Congress can get rid of the president — again,
given sufficient unity.
I have plenty more to say about all of this, ... more »
ANOTHER Reason To Never Ever Have A "Facebook" Account: Facebook Hacked - How Criminals Can Exploit Your Data!

Ann Carlton, who worked for a time as Ralph Miliband's research assistant

Spectator. "He just wanted to make it better by transforming it into a
Communist state, and that meant destroying a lot of Britain's social
institutions, because they promoted and buttressed social inequality."'

"Congress has averted a default by the US feds. But only for another few

major economy since Adolf Hitler’s Germany declared that it would not pay
its bills. That was in 1933.
