Trudy Rubin: Contractors were real winners in Iraq war

The heart of the problem, said the Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan, is excessive reliance on badly supervised private contractors engaging in “vast amounts of spending for no benefit.”

Waste can be a weapon as well - especially if it denies access to a vital supply. If it seems that this supply is to be satisfied - but is not - so much the better.Fallujah's water plant is a case in point ( in an area subjected to intensive irradiation from depleted uranium with consequential genetic damage to the unborn ). But for the premise to seem reasonable, it would need some sort of corroboration. Hydraulic Warfare - to desert tribes Poisoning the Well - is an essential of war. Turkish dams are cutting supply via the rivers. But years earlier water was targeted in a different manner, utilizing knowledge that clean water was essential to public health. http://www.progressive.org/mag/nagy0901.html Such tactics seem unthinkable. They are not. http://www.waragainsttheweak.com/
The PNAC got rid of Saddam and partitioned Iraq ( Kurdistan might as well be a separate country ) as a way to destroy government in countries where oil was to be found. Search rewriting the political map ( the Great Game ) for more.

Will the Real Reformers Please Stand Up?

the One Levee Board campaign took place long before the investigative studies were complete. It took place long before anyone fully understood why the Greater New Orleans flooded so badly. The campaign pulled attention away from the true culprits–the engineers and commanders at the Army Corps of Engineers–and focused attention on the pre-Katrina Orleans Levee Board which, to this day, has not been found guilty of wrong doing pertaining to the Flood.

LOL @ this clown. His government is harboring chest-opening, heart-eating, throat-slitting Jihadist murderers and terrorists, literally the stepchildren of al-Qaeda, and yet he has the audacity to call Assad a monster. Compared to Saudi-US-Turkish-Israeli-British backed Jihadist murderers, Assad is the second coming of Christ. Secretary of State Kerry's praise for Assad is surprising. It shows that U.S. officials aren't totally mad and dishonest. Praising your enemy is good. Kerry should get applauded for that. U.S. praise for Assad inappropriate -Turkey's Erdogan. “The futility of everything that comes to us from the media is the inescapable consequence of the absolute inability of that particular stage to remain silent. Music, commercial breaks, news flashes, adverts, news broadcasts, movies, presenters... there is no alternative but to fill the screen; otherwise there would be an irremediable void. That's why the slightest technical hitch, the slightest slip on the part of the presenter becomes so exciting, for it reveals the depth of the emptiness squinting out at us through this little window.” - Jean Baudrillard

Shutdown Doesn't Stop Employment Law Filing Deadlines

Donna Ballman at Screw You Guys, I'm Going Home - 11 hours ago
Thanks to the government shutdown, EEOC's website is down. NLRB's websiteis also down. You might assume the fact the government is shut down means your deadline for filing claims against your employer is extended. You'd be wrong (maybe). If you have a deadline coming up soon for filing a charge of discrimination with EEOC or a charge against employer with NLRB, you may still have to (somehow) get your filing done in time. My latest piece in AOL Jobs tells you what to do if you have a pressing deadline to file with EEOC or NLRB.

Oy, Fournier

Just when you think he's hit bottom, he keeps going. First bit: Fournier believes that Republican demands (about ACA) are unreasonable, but that Barack Obama should negotiate with them. Fournier entirely ignores the argument against negotiations: that rewarding hostage-taking is a mistake, and that therefore Obama should not be willing to give anything at all on the debt limit (or, for that matter, on a short-term CR, as opposed to a full year funding bill). There are counterarguments to that position, I think, but Fournier just ignores it completely. Second bit: Fournier believes ... more »

Will The GOP Shut-Down-The-Government Strategy Further Decimate California Republicans?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 23 hours ago
Trends start in California Obama beat Romney 6,493,924 (59%) to 4,202,127 (38%) in California. Obama won every county with a substantial population except Orange and Riverside-- and Riverside was a 49-49% tie. Of California's 53 congressional districts, Obama won 41 districts (including 3 with Republican congressmen, Jeff Denham, David Valadao and Gary Miller) and of the 12 Romney won, Obama was within striking distance in 3, all occupied by GOP congressmen who are Boehner loyalist committee chairmen, Darrell Issa, Ed Royce and Buck McKeon. There were 7 districts where Romney failed ... more »

You have a built-in indicator. Happiness this way, unhappiness that way. Of course, there may be a thousand ways that lead to Me. Certainly, you want happiness. I want you to have happiness. Yet there is greater than happiness to gauge yourself by. The knack you are developing is to be happy – anyway – any way. Why wouldn’t every path take you to happiness? Why not start from happiness ... more »

Close to 99 percent of the mainstream media articles on Syria rely on a single source, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It is a one-man operation in London run by Rami Abdulrahman, whose day job is running a small clothing shop. Once again, one man and an NGO have been able to ignite international opinion in favor of “humanitarian” intervention. It woul... more »

*by Ken* Last October's "What's Out There Weekend New York" was my introduction to the Cultural Landscape Foundation, and it was a pretty good indication that these are serious people when it comes to exploring the ways in which public landscapes are imagined and executed. Oh, there were glitches that seemed mostly owing to the fact that the planning wasn't done locally -- not least the scheduling of this incredibly ambitious program for the same weekend as "Open House New York," which I described here recently, in connection with this year's edition of OHNY, October 12-13, as "pr... more »

Don't assume from this picture of Sean Patrick Maloney's lovely family that he isn't a conservative Friday Michaelangelo Signorile picked up on the theme we've been discussing here at *DWT* about the disappointments inherent in identity politics. He singled out anti-progressive gay congressmembers, specifically Sean Patrick Maloney (New Dem-NY) and Kyrsten Sinema (New Dem-AZ). Both, though Sinema even more so, campaigned for Congress as progressives and both were very upfront about being gay and seemed to hope voters would assume because they are openly gay, they would also back a pr... more »

snowden: mass surveillance threatens to be the greatest human rights challenge of our time

The heroic Edward Snowden, in his own words, via Jesselyn Radack, at the European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee in Brussels. I thank the European Parliament and the LIBE Committee for taking up the challenge of mass surveillance. The surveillance of whole populations, rather than individuals, threatens to be the greatest human rights challenge of our time. The success of economies in developed nations relies increasingly on their creative output, and if that success is to continue, we must remember that creativity is the product of curiosity, which in turn is the product of... more »

my favourite customers and two-way readers' advisory

laura k at wmtc - 1 day ago
The children's library where I work services a huge age-range of young people and their caregivers, from birth up to around age 12. I enjoy the full range - helping parents understand the importance of reading to their children, helping kids find fun books to read, finding material for school projects and reports - all of it. But what I love best is connecting avid young readers - of the age group known as "tweens" - with books they enjoy. Wikipedia defines the tween demographic as ages 10-12, but tweens may be 9-13, or may even be as young as 7 or 8, depending on the person. Tweens... more »

what i'm reading: the maze runner, a youth novel

laura k at wmtc - 1 day ago
There's a subgenre of youth books in which young people are cast into an alien and dangerous world, where they must struggle to understand their purpose, struggle to survive. If you remember your own adolescence, the metaphor should be obvious. These books are often characterized as nihilistic or depressing, but I find that's generally the thoughts of people who haven't read the book. While a survival book may be frightening and sometimes violent, it usually offers positive messages about what it takes to survive. Young heroes find inner reserves of strength and courage, and learn ... more »

Greece considers confiscation of private assets - to obtain social security contributions and avoid slashing pensions and benefits ! 14 billion seems to be the gap the Greek Government needs to close - how they do that without further crushing the economy and sending more folks to the poor house is anyone's guess ! And maybe the reason Greece is trying to avoid a third / fourth bailout from the Troika is there desire to obtain reparations from Germany - 220 billion by the calculation of the Greeks !

Plans to move Czech embassy to Jerusalem

An Israeli newspaper, The Jerusalem Post, finally noticed the current visit of the Czech president Miloš Zeman to Israel. The article describes some of the actual depth of the Czechoslovak and Czech support for the Jewish state. The new Czech president – who has always been comparing Arafat to Hitler and who recommended the NATO to invite Israel and redefine the purpose of the organization as a group fighting against the Islamic Anticivilization, an empire stretching from Northern Africa through Indonesia that is partly funded by oil and partly by drugs – made the proposal to move... more »

Texas Governor: Whither After El Pendejo?

Manifesto Joe at Manifesto Joe's Texas Blues - 1 day ago
By Manifesto Joe Texas has a weak governor, strong lieutenant governor system. The No. 2 executive in the state, presiding over the Senate, is often thought to have at least marginally more power. But the governor does wield a veto pen and is at least symbolically the state's leader. The 2014 race for governor seems to be taking shape, now that Rick "El Pendejo" Perry has, after 14 long years, decided that he doesn't want to be governor for life and hasn't ruled out another embarrassing bid for the presidency.
