33pm MDSTfaludi: corporatist pseudo-feminism vs radical change for women and all working people
I would like to draw your attention to an excellent article by Susan Faludi
in *The Baffler*: Facebook Feminism: Like It or Not.
Faludi contrasts the corporatist, individualistic, me-first, privileged,
self-centered, pseudo-feminism of "Lean In" with the collective,
cross-class activism of some of the original feminists: the "Mill Girls" of
Lowell, Massachusetts, who fought for human rights and labour rights for *
all* women. Describing the links between feminism, class struggle, the
labour movement, and even the abolitionist movement, Faludi demonstrates
how all oppression is inter... more »

Guest Post - Eco-friendly Tips for Travelling Across Europe
Its culture, art and history makes Europe a fantastic region to travel
through. Not only does it attract tourists from the US and Canada, but
Europeans themselves will often travel through the region exploring the
many different traditions and cultures it has to offer. The fact that there
are so many countries with such different traditions and characters
compacted into a small region makes this an exciting and interesting part

With the war on Syria on hold (for now at least) the psychos in Israel and

Default set aside without consideration of merits
As a general rule, one of the factors to be considered in setting aside a
default is the merit of the claim, appeal, application etc against which
default is made. In an interesting chambers decision this week in the Court
of Appeal for Ontario Mr Justice Doherty found that, where the default was
brief and the cause of the default technical, a consideration of the merits
was unnecessary and default would be set aside directly. The decision is,
as yet, unreported but I have a copy should anyone need it: Fitzpatrick v

Illusory Failure
This year, my son’s art teacher started every student out with an F. This
grade remains unchanged until all their assignments are turned in. This is
supposed to be motivating. Each student spends the majority of the school
year with a failing grade, which sets off a string of emails and phone
calls to anxious parents, reminding everyone involved, on an almost daily
basis, of the child’s impending “failure”. Rather than working to create
an inspired piece of art, the kids are instead merely working to avoid
flunking.

By now there is general agreement among climate scientists that, awkward as
it seems, global warming has been in "pause" mode for the last decade. It
is believed the expected warming is going into the deep oceans, and also
has been shielded by aerosols. Yet in that same decade, the death of trees
has vastly accelerated. Visibly damaged foliage on all plant species,
including annuals being watered in pots, is ubiquitous and worsening every
year. Already now, in early August, leaves flutter like yellow confetti on

Nicely done Are You Being Served?
Are You Being Served was never my favourite sitcom, not very subtle. But
the bit from 22:22 to 23:45 is rather good:

McDicking Us Over
In the nearly nine years I've been blogging, I've almost never
mentioned McDonald's, a corporation that's responsible for more obesity
than sugar, polyunsaturated fats and cheese combined. This is because,
largely thanks to Morgan Spurlock's *Super Size Me*, I would think that
most of us already knew that McDick's represents the very worst in
corporations and everything that is wrong with America. They slowly kill us
with ersatz, corporately-generated food substitute and had strong-armed the
House into passing the Cheeseburger Law that protects their bottom line
from tort laws... more »

Black and Veach on the future cost of energy
I recently called attention to Breakthrough Institute's report, How to Make
Nuclear Power Cheap. This report called attention to the potential use of
advanced nuclear technology to lower and even dramatically lower nuclear
costs. This point has been repeatedly argued in Nuclear Green since 2008.
Thus it should not be assumed that nuclear costs will remain constant over
the next 35 years. My findings which are based on the Research of Dr. Per
Petersen, other nuclear engineers and scientists, ORNL, MIT, and UC

Two days ago, Mike Duffy took aim at Stephen Harper. Yesterday, Pam Wallin framed
the issue:
The Government, through Senator Carignan, has truly put the cart before the

unfair and troubling if his motion proceeds.
If it does, each and every one of you will seriously have to consider
