Condensation-driven winds: An update

After a burst of intense attention (some of you may remember discussions at Climate Etc., the Air Vent and the Blackboard), followed by nearly two years of waiting, our paper describing a new mechanism driving atmospheric motion has been published in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics.

Unlike the buoyancy mechanism, that applies to both liquids and gases, our new mechanism applies only to gases. Water vapor condenses and disappears from the gas phase when moist air ascends and cools. For this reason the water vapor pressure declines with height much faster than the other (non-condensable) atmospheric gases. As a result the exponential scale height hv of water vapor is markedly smaller than the scale height h of the air as a whole, hv << h

Obesity (?) of the U.S. scientific research enterprise

With the latest cuts created by the shortsighted political gridlock in Washington. DC, are we headed to a future where the world’s most talented young scientists and engineers no longer want to pursue careers in the United States? The declining opportunities for research funding have made survival for some of the most able researchers resemble a lottery—or perhaps Russian roulette is a better analogy. The effect on the U.S. research system seems devastating.

Mike Kelly of Oxburgh Panel fame writes the following comment: Some points that you have not considered, which blunt the strength of your argument: The scientific enterprise is not immune from the peril of obesity. Periodic downturns in funding provide an opportunity to weed out the less than effective. Even you I think would agree that much of the ‘science around climate change’ is second rate – repeatedly drawing unwarranted conclusions from incomplete data and extrapolating from simulations of model climates that have not been robustly verified in terms than an engineer would regard as essential as the basis for future action.

Vannevar Bush’s 1945 essay As We May Think.

Vannevar Bush’s 1945 report to President Roosevelt Science, the Endless Frontier led to the development of the National Science Foundation.  Excerpts:
The Government should accept new responsibilities for promoting the flow of new scientific knowledge and the development of scientific talent in our youth. These responsibilities are the proper concern of the Government, for they vitally affect our health, our jobs, and our national security.

Good question. I go to considerable trouble to eat as little of it as possible, but since it is now in the rain all over the planet it is impossible to totally avoid. That is why it is in our urine all over the planet, too. :(

We have got to find a way to end this pipeline madness. If this one goes like Kalamazoo, people will still be sickening and dying from this for years. It's not just 'crude'. They add all sorts of crap to make it flow right through the pipelines, and it combines into something much more toxic than even crude oil. This is what they want to do to our heartland, to New England, to some of the most beautiful and clean territory in their own country, primarily for the benefit of China (questionable, considering the egregious levels of pollution their citizens already suffer) and the chunk of the 1% who qualify as oilistocracy. This is the work of madmen. There has to be a way to stop it.
ANOTHER tar sands disaster: an Exxon pipeline in Arkansas has just spilled 165,000 gallons of toxic tar sands, forcing people from their homes.

Click LIKE if you agree: there is no such thing as a safe pipeline. No new pipelines, no tar sands, now.
