Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 9 minutes ago
I'll start the day, for a little context, with Tom Wicker's NYT op-ed.
Wicker was very much an establishment columnist -- a liberal, and no friend
of Nixon, to be sure, but still, reading him gives some of the context of
what people were thinking at the time:
--
For by now it is clear that these Nixon men are not merely trying to cover
up whatever responsibility they may have for the Watergate affair. They are
the same men who have gone to unprecedented lengths to seize the power of
the purse from Congress, who are conducting unauthorized war in Cambodia in

*Max Bruch (1838-1920)*

You might think that the haunting brief Adagio (8:53 in the
Piatigorsky-Ormandy recording, 9:56 in the Starker-Dorati) we're hearing
tonight, based on one of the most solemn of Hebrew chants, is a product of
its composer's deeply felt heritage. as Paul Affelder explained in his note
for the Starker-Dorati-Mercury recording, this is far from the case.
It is a sort of musical compliment to Max Bruch's long devotion to folk
music that what is considered one of his most representative works should
have sprung from an alien tradition. Along with his Fir... more »

found his evidence credible and he was unshaken in cross-examination.
Having come to this conclusion, I find that it has been established that
there was a real possibility that some alcohol may have been in Mr.

MARGARET THATCHER: GREAT STATESWOMAN OR WARMONGERING NEO-FASCIST?
Damian Lataan at Telling the History of the Twenty-First Century as it Really Is - 3 hours ago
In life, Margaret Thatcher succeeded in dividing a nation, and it seems in
death, decades after leaving politics, she divides a nation yet again.
Some say that the fact that she is so divisive is what makes her great.
That may be so, but is that really accolade? Being ‘great’ because one is
divisive is hardly a plus. As for being called a ‘stateswoman’, I think
not. Great statesman/women bring their peoples together; not polarise them
as Thatcher did. Great statespeople don’t drag their country into knee-jerk
wars overseas and nor do they abuse the working classes and the

“Oh, but everyone believed that if Cyprus "came up with" $7 billion (by
stealing deposits) and shutting down the banks, along with capital

time the destruction of jobs that came from pilfering small and medium

thus fewer tax receipts. Now the number has gone up to $23 billion- six

It's claimed by those who study such things that civilizations that

How are we to know when we're nearing that civilization bursting point? My

Classical physics and quantum mechanics are the only two frameworks for
physics that are worth mentioning. And it's quantum mechanics that is more

Accidents killing professional climate alarmists
Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 22 hours ago
This blog entry will review some recent sad events.
This pretty, 35-year-old lady is Dr Katharine Giles of London.
Unfortunately, the bike accident on the picture is no accident. She hit a
lorry and died.
Giles focused on the analyses of Arctic and Antarctic ice. Her freezing
website featured a blog, too. The most cited paper she co-authored, one
with almost 100 citations, was about the 2007 Arctic ice minimum.
The other co-authors were Seymour Laxon and Andy Ridout. And that's where
the story gets even more interesting.
This is Seymour Laxon, a 49-year-old researcher who... more »

“It's part of nature's built-in checks and balances, that while there may
be times when you think you can't even help yourself, precisely in such
moments there will always be someone else nearby... you can help, instead.
Which, I think you know, is actually one of the fastest ways to help
yourself. I sure feel better.”
“I hope that helps,”

Take a bow, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara -- scourge of kook corruption

A madcap novel of the sloppiest turf war ever launched by the Brooklyn mob.
Kid Sally Palumbo has been a loyal servant to the Brooklyn Mafia for years.
His specialty is murder, and he is so skilled at it that he has gotten the
attention of Mafia boss Papa Baccala. But unfortunately for Kid Sally,
murder pays poorly. He wants to make real dough, to get respect, and to be
able to tell his colleagues where to sit when they eat dinner. In short, he
wants to be boss. The job would be his for the taking -- if only Kid Sally
weren't a Grade A moron. . .

Haldeman's diary:
[Mitchell] also was concerned that Dean's testimony would be the one thing
that could really unscramble the whole operation. We should try to get Dean
not to go to the grand jury, in his opinion. I mentioned this to the P.
He's quite concerned about it. Told me to talk to E. He was raising the
question of whether that is the linchpin in the whole thing...
[...]
The P still obviously very concerned about the whole issue and spending
quite a little time on it. E meets this evening with Ervin and Baker to try
to resolve the ground rule question of whether we go up to... more »

"Oh man, you live in Toronto? I love Toronto! I go there a lot. I have a
friend who races horses at Woodbine."
"Woodbine, is that the one near the airport? I live right near there."
"Toronto's a great town. I love hockey, so you know I love going up to
Canada."
*Talk of hockey leads to talk of baseball, and as it turns out...*
"Well, I couldn't really say, I'm a Red Sox fan."
"Get outta here! Me too! I'm a total diehard!"
"No way? Another New York area Sox fan!"
Typical how-is-our-team-this-year talk goes on for a while, both of us
quite animated. Do we have a decent closer, the e... more »
Senate does something about gun safety reform
Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 1 day ago
It's not much so far. Really it's kind of pathetic that a simple cloture
vote to allow debate is such big news.
The procedural vote followed a breakthrough by Sens. Joe Manchin, D-West
Virginia, and Pat Toomey, R-Pennsylvania, who reached a compromise on
broadening background checks to include private purchases at gun shows and
on the Internet.
Because of the bipartisan deal, Senate Democrats backing the legislation
received support from enough Republicans to approve the cloture motion,
68-31, setting up debate on the proposals and amendments expected to last
for two weeks.

The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster: Fukushima Nuclear Crisis Is Far From Over - Continuous Leakage Of Radioactive Water And Dangers From Spent Fuel Rod Pools!
Northerntruthseeker at Northerntruthseeker - 1 day ago
I am still following the situation at Fukushima Japan, over two years now
since the disaster that caused the failure of at least 3 nuclear power
reactors, with disgust and anger.... It is so shocking that our Jewish
controlled media continues to promote wars for their cherished criminal
state of Israel, while a true world threatening crisis is still ongoing in
Japan! It has been the job of we, the bloggers, to get the true situation
about this horrible disaster out for everyone to see for themselves...
I came across the following article, from Washington's Blog, at
