Fix spec building to make Auckland affordable again
SHOULD AUCKLAND BUILD OUT? Should Auckland build up?
“Sprawl” or a “compact city”?
The new Auckland Unitary Plan, the way planners have decided we must live,
plumps for the former and all but bans the latter.
Opponents like Nick Smith reckons we must build out, and castigates
planners who promote increasing the density of the existing city.
They’re both wrong, yet they’re both right. As I’ve said before, Auckland
should do both. Basically, it should allow people to do both: to live as
and where they *choose* to, and can afford. (Choice! Fancy that!)
The key to making Auckland liv... more »
Death Penalty For Crooked Congressmen And Their Crooked Staffs? Nooooooo... Never
Capitol Hill doesn't need weaker ethics laws; it needs much stronger ethics
laws. If it was up to me, elected officials and their staffers would be a
special category of defendant, different from ordinary people. Any crimes
they commit are crimes against the trust society has placed on them. So...
I don't want to offend all my friends who hate the death penalty but... a
congressman or high-ranking bureaucrat who breaks the law should be shot--
or whatever the humane way is for disposing of the trash is. Don't worry...
Congress is moving in the other direction.

Break, entry and theft may be established by recent possession of goods obtained by break and enter
*R. v. Pitcher*, 2013 NLCA 22 allows the doctrine of recent possession to
be used to prove break, entry and theft. Some might suggest that holding
places a great deal of weight on what is a permissible presumption of fact;
nevertheless the Court's holding is clear:
[29] The doctrine of recent possession permits a conviction for
break, entry and theft if it is established that the accused is in recent
possession of the goods stolen in the break and entry. Recency is
determined by the circumstances, including the amount of time between the
commission of the break, entry and ... more »

Last night I spent an evening with God. We chatted until early this

God looks like. I held him, laughed with him, hugged her and had a drink

The case of Penney CEO Ron Johnson: Managerial "genius" can't be rated without reference to context
*Ousted JCPenney CEO Ron Johnson*: *Say, didn't this guy used to be a

J.C. Penney's board of directors has ousted CEO Ron Johnson after only 16
months on the job as a risky turnaround strategy backfired and led to
massive losses and steep sales drops.
The department store chain said that it has rehired Johnson's predecessor

I’ve just discovered a reason to vote Len Brown. In two words: John Minto:
Veteran activist John Minto is asking his political party [Whiners &

He’s disappointed me too. But for opposite reasons to Minto’s.

Mind you, that would mean actually registering to vote.

The BBC, the L.S.E., North Korea, Paddy O'Connell and Peter O'Hanraha-hanrahan
Well, the BBC can certainly give itself a right good whacking at times. If
you want to hear a BBC reporter getting violently slapped around
(figuratively-speaking) by a BBC interviewer then please give this
morning's *Broadcasting House *a try. The interviewer displaying a
surprising amount of rudeness was Paddy O'Connell and the BBC reporter on
the receiving end - though he fought back a bit - was John Sweeney,
presenter of tomorrow night's *Panorama, North Korea Undercover. *

As you may be aware, this is the subject of a heated and headline-grabbingrow between the BBC and the ... more »
Engineering Consent Through Propaganda
Edward Bernays is responsible for encouraging 'leaders' to manage the
public through public relations, rather than leveling with them about real
conditions. See the Century of the Self here and read Bernay's book, Propaganda,
here.
Bernays' encouraged the titans of industry and presidents to engineer
consent using propaganda that appealed to people's instinctual drives and
herd instinct.
Bernays approach was and remains sociopathic, but also very effective, as illustrated
by the following anecdote:
Yesterday while at my oldest son's track meet (for 5 hours) I had the

Nikki Haley (SC - ALEC Governor) - Has a Challenger
Well, well, well,
South Carolina gets another chance to redeem themselves.
Moderate Democrat Vincent Sheheen, has announced that he’s going to give
his pursuit of the South Carolina Governorship another go in 2014. He lost
to Governor Nikki Haley by 4 points in 2010. I know he’s running again
because my Halifax Media-owned local right-wing newspaper revealed his
intention in a minimal coverage story on page C-3. Had the situation been
reversed and Sheheen was the sitting Governor, there would have been giant
front-page headlines “HALEY TO CHALLENGE GOVERNOR.” A picture of Haley

A Grave Injustice
If someone committed a grave injustice against you (stole your business,
your life savings, kidnapped your child, poisoned your family, destroyed
your life) and then bribed or otherwise corrupted all the institutions that
could bring you justice, what would you do?
What would you feel entitled to do?
Would you ever say to yourself: "Well, the courts have ruled in my
adversary's favour. I might not agree with this decision, but I have to
respect it."? Would you really say that in the face of an obviously corrupt
process?
What if it never even got that far? What if the police were ... more »

We are not alone

We're going to have to get used to drones. They're available everywhere
and getting better and cheaper as electronic toys do. HD TV cameras can be
added that are now tiny and lightweight and cheap and can even see in the
dark
I hope we don't have to get used to the constant surveillance they make
possible and it's not just the invasion of our private spaces by government
agencies I'm alarmed about. Various people and groups of people with all
kinds of ideas about what you're doing, aren't doing and should be doing

The decision was unanimous. Every single member of the Republican National
Committee voted to reaffirm the party's opposition to marriage equality.
There was no debate and the package of conservative resolutions passed with
a voice vote-- Soviet style, just the way Reince Priebus likes it. The
delegates had been spooked by threats from the far, dark corners of the
anti-Jesus crowd to pull out of the party if they didn't keep with the
homophobia.

Psy - Gentleman
The Americans haven't made a series of surgical strikes against the North's
nuclear facilities. And neither has Kim Yong-un let loose an artillery
barrage as prelude to a ground invasion. But there has been a horrifying
development on the Korean peninsula all the same: Psy has a new single out.
Here is his official video for *Gentleman*.
Does it match *Gangnam Style* for sheer awfulness? And can it be construed
as an ideological weapon in the North/South cold war?
A Return To Responsible Government?
Andrew Coyne writes, in *The National Post*, that there's not a dime's
worth of difference between Canada's three major political parties:
This is our politics, then, at least for the next two years: three parties
offering more of the same, saying little, differing less, wholly in thrall
to their leaders, and applauded on all sides for their pragmatism and
discipline. Bliss is it in this dusk to be alive.
Parties have become empty vessels, waiting to be told by their leaders what
they believe. There is, of course, the Conservative Party:

her hypocrisy and dishonesty, Rhee merely gestured:

Individuality and Doctor Who's Companions
*A note from @Catherinebuca on the characterisation of Dr Who's companions

Remember Donna? She became the most important human in all of history. And
it worked because she wasn't the point of the whole series - she wasn't
trying to get into the Doctor's pants and actually had some character. She
was just another random everywoman, who didn't have a lot of faith in

was kinda awesome in her own right, who worked as a foil for the Doctor and

That's how Haldeman's diary begins for this Friday. It's really the
beginning of four very long Watergate days, days which ended the limbo the
case had been in for the last several days, and really since Pat Gray and
then James McCord began the unraveling of everything.
The main developments aren't in the Ervin Committee, but it continues to

which was promptly leaked to the press. At this point, the Watergate

unpaid labour used to be called slavery. now it's an internship.

A while back, I had a disturbing conversation with an unpaid editor at The

wondering if they also got a free pass on staff.

Who is Progress KY
Serious question. While it's entirely possible they're just the world's
most inept wannabe lefty anarchists, Progress KY feels more like a GOP

Drones=Terrorists
A very important reminder from Richard Becker of ANSWER today during
today's anti-drone rally in San Francisco that the first three people
killed by drones were three farmers collecting scrap metal. Why were they
killed? Because one of them was a "tall man" (judging from the perspective
of a drone camera) and the other two were "deferential to him" (again,
judging by looking through a drone camera), and hence based on this
"intelligence" they concluded it was Osama bin Laden and assassinated all
three by drone.
