Spring cleanup open friday thread
by liberal japonicus With Ugh coming onboard, it is probably a good time to do a cleanup of the right sidebar and the blogs. The iconoclast in me wants to suggest we do away with the blog roll, as I think no one uses it and the whole thing about exchanging blog links has this Gilded Age feel to it, but that might be one iconic notion too far. So, suggestions and some discussion is requested.

Can We Kiss Internet Privacy Goodbye?
When the House introduced the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) in 2011, purportedly to help prevent cyber threats to national security, the measure was criticized heavily by Internet policy watchdogs and civil liberties groups, who argued that the bill would likely encroach on internet users’ Fourth amendment rights. The bill passed the House in the spring of 2012 but died i
‘Please Stop Exploiting People’
Approximately 150 years after the abolition of American slavery and Russian serfdom, forced labor and its close relative, child labor, are still very much with us. And not in some distant anachronistic place, but embedded in the fabric—sometimes literally—of the 21st-century economy. The International Labour Organization (ILO), part of the United Nations, estimated that in 2012 nearly 21 milli
Los Mineros’ Leader-in-Exile
On February 19, 2006, an explosion in a coal mine in northern Mexico known as Pasta de Conchos trapped 65 miners. The accident became a milestone in the career of Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, general secretary of the National Mining and Metal Workers Union (known as Los Mineros), who accused Grupo México—the mine’s owner—and the government of having ignored complaints about safety conditions at the m
