Take a bow, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara -- scourge of kook corruption
A madcap novel of the sloppiest turf war ever launched by the Brooklyn mob.
Kid Sally Palumbo has been a loyal servant to the Brooklyn Mafia for years.
His specialty is murder, and he is so skilled at it that he has gotten the
attention of Mafia boss Papa Baccala. But unfortunately for Kid Sally,
murder pays poorly. He wants to make real dough, to get respect, and to be
able to tell his colleagues where to sit when they eat dinner. In short, he
wants to be boss. The job would be his for the taking -- if only Kid Sally
weren't a Grade A moron. . .

Senate does something about gun safety reform
It's not much so far. Really it's kind of pathetic that a simple cloture
vote to allow debate is such big news.
The procedural vote followed a breakthrough by Sens. Joe Manchin, D-West
Virginia, and Pat Toomey, R-Pennsylvania, who reached a compromise on
broadening background checks to include private purchases at gun shows and
on the Internet.
Because of the bipartisan deal, Senate Democrats backing the legislation
received support from enough Republicans to approve the cloture motion,
68-31, setting up debate on the proposals and amendments expected to last
for two weeks.

Hard road to travel
It's difficult to know where to start in a country with a lot of problems.
Give the kids a better education? Prepare subsistence farmers for tough
days to come? Do something about all the murders? Advocate for better
wages? Look for economic opportunities to address chronic unemployment?
Nor is it easy to priorize when a country has strong distinctions between
its classes, with all its problems at the bottom of the economic scale and
all the wealthy, influential people at the top.

Boehner Comes Through For China Again-- Defeats Made In America Proposal
China made a really good investment by donating to the Chamber of Commerce

After reading the article about the research into the June 23, 1947 Cedar

The Cedar Rapids case was important because it was alleged the sighting of
a disc took place prior to Arnold and more importantly, it was documented
prior to Arnold. Granted, the documentation was in a newspaper, but if the
witness said that he had seen a disc-shaped object and it was reported

Hear it from two economists: Social Security is fiscally sound for at least 20 years, bought and paid for by the regressive Payroll Tax. The present fiscal crisis is solely due to taxpayer bailouts of the big banks, not to national debt. And as any intellectually honest economist would tell you, austerity would (or will) greatly deepen the current recession.

MIND CONTROL - DREAMS
"I read Lady M's autobiographical 'Memoirs of a Marriage' where she states:
"'At the age of 10 or 11 I announced I wanted to play golf, I didn't even
know what golf was and to this day cannot explain the compulsion.'
"When I read how she met her husband-to-be on a golf course in Davos,
Switzerland and they were married three months later I just wondered

THE WAY WE ARE: Blunders and bloopers concerning gun laws!
*THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2013*
*Interlude—The way we actually function:* Thousands of years of propaganda
proclaim that we are the rational animal.
Good lord! Have you ever tried to watch The Way We Actually Function? Let’s
consider four recent attempts to discuss proposed gun legislation.
One of these moments concerns the facts. One of these moments concerns the
logic. Also involved is the basic way cable “news” channels function.
Propaganda to the side, The Way We Are is depressingly dumb. To start our
review of the mess about guns, let’s consider a factual claim—a claim which

CORPORATE STRATEGY
MNN. Apr. 11, 2013 To derail the occupation forces, we must understand
their corporate strategy and then build resistance. The following is the
breakdown of the strategy they have in place. Our strength is in our
own minds.

How Paul Bremer Tried To Ignore Iraq’s Ayatollah Sistani
Paul Bremer, the head of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) arrived
in Iraq in May 2003. He was determined to put his stamp upon the country.
He had a vision for how it would become a democracy, which would require up
to two years of transition under his supervision. This was to be a top down
process that had little room for what Iraqis wanted. This ran into
immediate opposition from Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the most senior
Shiite cleric in Iraq. He wanted Iraqis to have a voice in the process, and
demanded that elections be held as soon as possible to draw up a new I... more »

Who could have predicted?
1) GOP says no budget deal without "entitlement" cuts.
2) Obama gives them "entitlement" cuts.
3) Republicans say no budget deal because:
Well Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) — who also happens to be chairman of the House
GOP’s re-election committee — just showed how it’s done, saying Obama’s
budget “lays out a shocking attack on seniors.”
“I’ll tell you when you’re going after seniors the way he’s already done on

Renaming the Arab Spring
I’ve learned to limit consumption of Tom Friedman, except when he talks
about the Middle East…yesterday his column suggested that the Arab Spring
should be renamed in light of recent events…I think he is on to something,
but I doubt his suggestion of “The Arab Quarter Century” will fly…my
suggestion is the “The Arab Turn”,

Tennessee's Latest Stupidity: Take Food Away from Hungry Kids for Not Passing the State Test
I was in my hometown of Erin, TN for their Irish Day Celebration in March,
and I was talking to an old friend of mine, now a judge. It occurred to
both of as we were talking that when we were growing up there in the 60s,
our town and our state was a much richer place with more to offer and more
to gain. Since then the state's politics and policies have become
increasingly conservative as most people in the state have become poorer,
less healthy, and more desperate. And so today we see a kind of
proto-fascist extremism in the state legislature and the Governor's Mansion
that leve... more »
Fort McMurray's Downtown Redevelopment Plan...or Why I Can Always Count on Politicians to Bring Out My Inner Skeptic
A couple posts ago I mentioned about the recent demo of the Oil Can, a
local drinking establishment that's had a pretty colorful history. Its
pending demolition is but a small part of a redevelopment plan for Fort
McMurray's downtown core. The scope of this project is in a word, massive
and I only fully realized this over the weekend after perusing a study
proposing nothing less than a complete overhaul of downtown. Part of the
plan in revitalizing downtown is a proposed civic area, much needed and
overdue I should add. Initially I suspected this would take the shape a

Any Congressional Democrat Who Backs Cutting Social Security Might As Well Look For Another Job
If Obama was just trying to demonstrate that the Republicans will never
compromise no matter what-- even if he gives them exactly what they want--
fine. It worked. Otherwise, his call for cutting Social Security and
further shredding the social safety net to "placate" the austerity hawks he
surrounds himself with, is catastrophic. It's obviously catastrophic for
the elderly and for handicapped vets first and foremost. But it's also
catastrophic for the Democratic brand to whatever extent Obama is allowed
to represent that brand after this Grand Betrayal. And it's catastrophic to

Thatcher Is Dead. Thatcherism Isn't.
Margaret Thatcher died this week. Unfortunately, the program she advocated
hasn't -- at least not yet. Tom Walkom puts the Iron Lady in historical
perspective:
The world that Thatcher faced when she became Britain’s prime minister in
1979 was still coming to terms with the events of the post-1945 era.
World War II had produced a great compromise between labour and capital.
Under the terms of that compromise, capitalism was allowed to do its magic.
In return, through both labour unions and the welfare state, working people
were awarded a piece of the action.
It was a remarkably ... more »

Alexandria Rising
It is a little startling just how fast this gas is getting to market. It
also establishes a major trade opportunity for Turkey. Pumping gas to
Europe in competition with Russia is desirable. Pumping it from Israel is
both ironic and a sharp rebuke to the local political dispensation. There
are huge amounts of gas in Iraq and Iran that could also feed this pipeline.
Perhaps the opportunity to actually profit will focus folk's attention? We
can hope.
In the meantime, the economic posture of Israel will steadily improve
making them the natural Hegemon in the Middle East.... more »
Lowest Wintertime Ice Maxima
And a few days ago the entire Beaufort sea ice cover literally shattered.
Thus the spring is truly off to an interesting start and plenty more to
come. Everyone has forgotten that we seriously broke records last season
and there is ample reason to think we are entering uncharted country here.
Now the winter recovery is lack luster as well.
Add in the right wind conditions and we could see the ice been rapidly
removed.
In other words we can expect to see an interesting melt season this year.

Telomerase is Fully Mapped
A rather brave headline and in fairness there is plenty of unfounded
optimism around telomerase to go around and around. It is very seductive,
yet I do not think it will be that easy nor do I think it will be that
hard. In fact, I suspect that we will develop a sound and safe protocol
that naturally corrects cellular aging and allows an reinvigorated body to
fully restore itself. It is certainly hinted at here and there over the
years.
At least we have a door open.
For what it is worth, I suspect that our corrected lifeway entails living
productively on Earth until... more »
Deep Magma Imaging
More on the recent advances in deep imaging of the earth's crust. The melt
zone under the ridge is deeper and thicker than imagined but becoming
clearer. Sooner or later we can expect to map the whole crust to a decent
level of resolution.
The most important understanding coming out of all this is that liquid
means liquid somewhere down there. We are not talking about a glacial creep
here.
Fine resolution will also clearly map sinking plate segments as well which
will make interesting text books.
I assume that the deep working liquid happens to be molten basalt ... more »

Shapes of torus and modular group
In June 2012, I emphasized that the Higgs field was the first
experimentally observed elementary scalar field – the Higgs boson is the
first elementary spinless particle we know – and because string theory
loves to predict scalar fields and gives them many roles while many
alternative thinkers love to invent legends claiming that there's something
wrong about scalar fields, the discovery of the Higgs boson may be viewed
as a minor, modest victory for string theory.
I would like to spend some time with some scalar fields in string theory
and with their interesting properties. Quite g... more »
BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS IN SPACE

Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop, General Dynamics and Raytheon lead the
way but a host of other smaller companies who feed at the pork barrel
