Grilled Cheese and Gucamole

I love avocados. I could honestly eat them at every meal and never grow sick of them. There is something about a nice creamy avocado that always makes me want to reach for more. I don't make grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner very often because when I was little grilled cheese sandwiches were what my mom made when we were sick. Seriously, I associate them so much with sickness, that I always feel faintly sick when I eat one. I decided to set out to make a better grilled cheese, one that I would crave instead of associate with the flu. You will need: Bread Butter Provolone... more »

*"Obama's War On Social America"* By Stephen Lendman "Obama, Republicans and most democrats are in lockstep. They claim Medicare and Social Security are going broke. They lie saying so. When properly administered, both programs are sound. Modest adjustments only are needed to assure it. They're federally mandated. They're not entitlements. They're contractual obligations. They're for eligible recipients who qualify. Payroll taxes fund them. Social Security provides retirement, disability, survivorship, and death benefits. I've been meaning to review this movie for some time now, and it's been out a while and kind of old, but as usual I was too busy to be timely about it. But, on the Interwebs, it is never too late! This movie is an attempt to revisit the L. Frank Baum *Wizard of Oz* story as a prequel, focusing on the initial arrival of the Wizard---presented as a circus magic show charlatan, womanizer, and swindler---by balloon. The basic thematic arc of the story focuses on the Wizard's self-realization that he is hollow inside and his subsequent to redeem himself by becoming the champion of the ... more »

Adam Schiff- totally wrong for his new district When some of the country's "gayest" and gay-friendliest neighborhoods-- West Hollywood, Silverlake, Atwater, Los Feliz, Hollywood-- were redrawn into Adam Schiff's congressional district last year, you would have thought the long-time homophobe suddenly discovered he had 5 gay sons and a long-lost lesbian sister. Gun Tea Leaves

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 2 hours ago
The big news late this morning is that the Senate had no real trouble getting to the gun bill, voting 68-31 for cloture on the motion to proceed to the bill -- two Democrats defected and voted against cloture, but a whopping 16 Republicans defected and supported cloture. So they're on the bill. Which hardly means the bill will pass, or beat back future filibusters. The Manchin-Toomey compromise needs to be adopted as an amendment; that's going to need 60 votes, and is apparently the first thing they're going to work on. Then Republicans may attempt poison pill amendments that would,... more »

Paul Bremer, the head of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) arrived in Iraq in May 2003. He was determined to put his stamp upon the country. He had a vision for how it would become a democracy, which would require up to two years of transition under his supervision. This was to be a top down process that had little room for what Iraqis wanted. This ran into immediate opposition from Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the most senior Shiite cleric in Iraq. He wanted Iraqis to have a voice in the process, and demanded that elections be held as soon as possible to draw up a new I... more »

It occurred to both of as we were talking that when we were growing up there in the 60s, our town and our state was a much richer place with more to offer and more to gain. Since then the state's politics and policies have become increasingly conservative as most people in the state have become poorer, less healthy, and more desperate. Fort McMurray's Downtown Redevelopment Plan...or Why I Can Always Count on Politicians to Bring Out My Inner Skeptic

A couple posts ago I mentioned about the recent demo of the Oil Can, a local drinking establishment that's had a pretty colorful history. Its pending demolition is but a small part of a redevelopment plan for Fort McMurray's downtown core. The scope of this project is in a word, massive and I only fully realized this over the weekend after perusing a study proposing nothing less than a complete overhaul of downtown. Part of the plan in revitalizing downtown is a proposed civic area, much needed and overdue I should add. Initially I suspected this would take the shape a pedestr... more »

It's obviously catastrophic for the elderly and for handicapped vets first and foremost. Thatcher Is Dead. Thatcherism Isn't.

Margaret Thatcher died this week. Unfortunately, the program she advocated hasn't -- at least not yet. Tom Walkom puts the Iron Lady in historical perspective: The world that Thatcher faced when she became Britain’s prime minister in 1979 was still coming to terms with the events of the post-1945 era. World War II had produced a great compromise between labour and capital. Under the terms of that compromise, capitalism was allowed to do its magic. In return, through both labour unions and the welfare state, working people were awarded a piece of the action. It was a remarkably ... more »

It is a little startling just how fast this gas is getting to market. It also establishes a major trade opportunity for Turkey. Pumping gas to Europe in competition with Russia is desirable. Pumping it from Israel is both ironic and a sharp rebuke to the local political dispensation. There are huge amounts of gas in Iraq and Iran that could also feed this pipeline. Perhaps the opportunity to actually profit will focus folk's attention? We can hope. A rather brave headline and in fairness there is plenty of unfounded optimism around telomerase to go around and around. In fact, I suspect that we will develop a sound and safe protocol that naturally corrects cellular aging and allows an reinvigorated body to fully restore itself. It is certainly hinted at here and there over the years. At least we have a door open. For what it is worth, I suspect that our corrected lifeway entails living productively on Earth until... more »

We are not talking about a glacial creep here. Fine resolution will also clearly map sinking plate segments as well which will make interesting text books. Several of the NRA's biggest whores-- Ted Cruz (R-TX), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Mike Lee (R-UT), Miss McConnell (R-KY), Rand Paul (R-KY-- announced they would filibuster any gun safety legislation no matter what it is. None of them had even read any proposals before they declared they would prevent the Senate from even *debating* the bill. How High Does Senior Poverty Have to Go?

It's official: President Obama has proposed cutting Social Security by replacing the program's current inflation adjustment with the stingier "chained" Consumer Price Index. As I've discussed before, this risks undoing all the progress made against senior poverty since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965. 25% of seniors were poor according to official poverty line in 1968, compared to just 9.4% in 2006. Documentary evidence poses a major challenge for the Courts.
