Raid On Protest Site In Hawija, Iraq Leads To Armed Retaliation

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 2 minutes ago
Iraqis have been protesting in several cities since December 2012 to protest what they see as marginalization by the central government. On April 23, 2013, security forces raided a protest site in Hawija in Tamim province looking for militants that attacked an army checkpoint a few days beforehand. The operation quickly turned violent with several people killed and wounded, and dozens arrested. Immediately, there were retaliatory attacks in surrounding areas, and some leaders of the demonstrators started talking about taking on the security forces, which they claimed were under th... more »

English as the Official Language of the European Union?

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 8 minutes ago
There's a move afoot to have English declared the common language of the European Union and it's a German who is pushing the idea. Here *The Guardian *gives a pretty clear reason why a common language might be helpful when representatives of the constituent nations sit down to parlay. *Money talks, especially in Brussels. A billion euros are usually "mil milhoes de euros" in Portuguese, or a thousand million. In Spanish, likewise, "billón" means a million million, so billion is "mil millones de euros". Confusingly, "billion" translates as "milijarde" into Croatian, or "miljard" in... more »

Americans Settling In to Reality of Terrorism

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 8 minutes ago
The American people might just be getting terrorism fatigue after more than a decade of efforts by their politicians and media to keep them in a heightened state of anxiety. How long can anyone do that and stay sane? What price has already been exacted of them by those who have manipulated them since September, 2001? *A majority of Americans say occasional acts of terrorism are "part of life", and many doubt the government can do much more to prevent them, a new poll finds.* * * *About three-quarters of Americans said they agree that "occasional acts of terrorism in the US will... more »

Blocking HIV Reservoirs

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 42 minutes ago
This is a huge step closer to eliminating the HIV virus. We know the key protein and we know that we have to turn it of to win. This is at least a clear pathway. The disease itself is now well controlled but certainly not cured. Eliminating these reservoirs opens the door to an outright cure. This will ultimately be described as one of the greatest battles in medical science but also one of the most productive in terms of new science. I do think that we are in the homestretch with HIV. This is not the only route now. *Discovery may help prevent HIV 'reservoirs' ... more »

The BBC makes the prediction that we will possibly build a building as tall as ten thousand meters or as tall as Mount Everest. My real problem with that idea is that assuming it is possible, just why would we actually do it? There are far too many problems and unwarranted risks involved. Trudeau Wastes No Time in Showing His Hand

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 22 hours ago
If the polls are right and Justin Trudeau's Liberals manage to reclaim power from the Harper Cons in 2015 all signs are that Canada will continue to be governed on the principle of cynical opportunism. The spinelessness of the Liberals in joining Harper on the undemocratic terrorism amendments and the FIPPA trade sellout to China suggests the Liberals will continue on the disastrous (for Canada) path charted by Ignatieff. My suspicions that Justin is more Margaret than Pierre are confirmed.

Massachusetts Senate Primary-- One Week From Today

The special election to fill the Massachusetts Senate seat that was given up on February 1 by John Kerry is June 25th. However, in a state where former governor Mitt Romney only received 37% of the vote last November-- and where every vaguely plausible Republican demurred-- the Democratic primary a week from today (April 30) is probably the place where the race will be won or lost. Blue America has endorsed Ed Markey-- and if you'd like you can contribute directly to his campaign here. So far Markey has raised $4.7 million to his primary opponent, ConservaDem Stephen Lynch's $1.5 ... more »

After 9/11, Iran Arrested Al-Qaeda Operatives And Sought U.S. Assistance

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 22 hours ago
The *claim* that Iran is working with Al-Qaeda is so stupid and baseless that it doesn't deserve to be commented on. It almost makes your brain hurt. Anyone who has a basic knowledge of the culture and politics of the Middle East knows that Al-Qaeda is the pet toy of Saudi Arabia. Al-Qaeda hates Iran even more than it hates Israel and the United States. Tony Cartalucci writes in his article, *"US-Canada Claim Iran-Al Qaeda Ties Despite US Funding Al Qaeda in Iran for Years"*: Both at face value and upon deeper examination, this assertion is utterly absurd, divorced from reality,... more »

GOP terror scarers out in force

The same crowd who demanded we not mention 20 murdered schoolchildren in the debate over gun safety reform immediately leapt to making a couple of crazy kids in Boston the new existential threat to national security. Led by Lindsey "Huckleberry Dunderhead" Graham and John "Grumpy Gramps" McCain, a gaggle of GOPers are clamoring to designate the Boston bombers as enemy combatants. It's not that they don't know their demands are stupid and illegal under the rule of law. They just don't want an exploitable domestic terror event to go to waste.
