Genes from GMO Food Do Wind Up in People

cowboss at WALLACE SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY - 6 days ago
*New research finds signs of genetic material, and pesticides, from genetically modified food in the bodies of babies and pregnant women.* Are pesticides proliferating in your body? They could be, if you’re eating genetically modified foods. According to new research from Canadian scientists, the pesticides used on genetically modified (GM) crops and, in some cases, the genes used to create GM crops are able to survive in our digestive tracts, move into our bloodstreams, and, in the case of pregnant women, show up into their developing infants. The study, in press in the journal ... more »

Instead of Trying to Feed the World, Let’s Help it Feed Itself

cowboss at WALLACE SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY - 1 week ago
*“Feeding the world” was the background tune playing in the bank, on the car radio of the seed salesman, in the office of the accountant as farmers were counseled to “get big or get out,” to expand their production and change their growing practices to participate in a global food supply, rather than a regional one.* Sooner or later the question comes up, whether it is between two friends sharing a pot of stew made from local grassfed beef and their garden harvest, livestock farmers gathered on a pasture walk, neighbors working together to tend a flock of backyard chickens, or org... more »

"Lighten Up, It's Just a Cow"

cowboss at WALLACE SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY - 1 week ago
*From time to time people tell me, “Lighten up, it’s “just a cow.” or, “That’s a lot of money for “just a cow.” They don’t know the distance travelled, the time spent or the costs involved for “just a cow”. Some of my proudest moments have come with “just a cow.”* * Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a cow”, but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a cow,” and, in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a cow” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day. If you too, think it’s “just a cow”, then you ... more »

Work Makes A Farmer.

cowboss at WALLACE SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY - 3 weeks ago
Excerpted from "Work Made a Farmer" - a review of the Paul Harvey superbowl ad. Dodge trucks be damned The hard truth is that most of this country has little interest in getting out there and putting their hands in the dirt and doing the hard work of growing and raising food. We think we’re beyond that. We think we’re too “advanced.” We think that’s something best left to less civilized people. Within the context of the myth of progress—one of the ruling ideas of our time—an agrarian society and economy is seen as less civilized and inherently worse than an industrial society an... more »

Mangel Wurzels, The Feed That Monsanto Hasn't Messed With

cowboss at WALLACE SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY - 3 weeks ago
Attention small farmers --- Looking for a fantastic low cost Non GMO feed for your chickens, pigs, or cattle. These Mammoth Red mangels can reach weights of 15 plus pounds and are very high in energy (typically up to 13% sugar). Oldtimers know all about these and they were grown on most Ontario farms prior to corn silage becoming vogue. Typical yields are 40 plus tonnes per acre (not that your going to grow an acre) but even a small plot yield a huge pile. Very easy to grow - we grew these last year, the pigs and chickens loved them. Wallace Springs Farm has some extra seed - if ... more »

Wallace Springs Farm now has Hop Rhizomes available for purchase. These will be available in the spring, from late March to late April. We offer them on a pre-sale basis starting in February. The hop rhizomes we sell are grown organically on our farm. We will also have a small number of started plants available Rhizomes are the best way to produce strong, healthy, female plants. W5 Undercover Investigation Reveals Disturbing and Inhumane Treatment of Animals

cowboss at WALLACE SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY - 2 months ago
* It's about time this made news in Canada, in fact it's much past that time. * Toronto (December 7, 2012) – This week, W5’s Tom Kennedy heads to a Manitoba hog farm, reporting on a hidden camera investigation that gives viewers a disturbing, inside glimpse into the practices that can be found at many factory farms which produce much of the meat that ends up on Canadians’ dinner tables. “FOOD FOR THOUGHT” premieres Saturday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. ET on CTV. Grass Fed or Grain Fed? What's Your Beef?

cowboss at WALLACE SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY - 7 months ago
*A very well done infographic on grass fed beef vs "commercial beef" - the only issue that I have is that the grass fed animal that is shown is not a beef animal but rather a dairy animal. I get the point they were trying to make that grain/corn fed beef are "fat" but lets be fair, healthy grass fed beef animals do also have a "nice finish".*

Twenty-Five Rules of Disinformation

cowboss at WALLACE SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY - 7 months ago
*In a world of rampant disinformation and misinformation, here are some "rules" that may help you understand the "hows" and "whys"* *1. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.* Regardless of what you know, don't discuss it -- especially if you are a public figure, news anchor, etc. If it's not reported, it didn't happen, and you never have to deal with the issues. *2. Become incredulous and indignant.* Avoid discussing key issues and instead focus on side issues which can be used to show the topic as being critical of some otherwise sacrosanct group or theme. Our Deadly Addiction to Cheap Meat

cowboss at WALLACE SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY - 8 months ago
BY Terry J. Allen and published at In These Times America’s cheap meat habit is costing more than we bargained for. The factory farming of cows, pigs, poultry and fish sucks up 29 million pounds—80 percent—of antibiotics sold in the United States. Many illness-causing bacteria are now resistant to most or all of the antibiotics that once killed them. While the overuse of antibiotics on humans has contributed to this public health crisis, the most egregious factor in creating antibiotic resistance is the routine, widespread, greed-driven dosing of livestock. It hasn’t always been easy, but in the process, I’ve lost a lot of weight, gained lots of energy, and leveled out my moods. I also feel healthier and look much younger than I did ... more »

*Originally published in* Off The Grid News On January 10, 1984, Americans first got to see three older women gathered around a seemingly impressive looking hamburger in a fast-food restaurant that proudly proclaimed themselves “The Home of the Big Bun.” After two of them marvel at the size of the bun, one of them lifts up the top of the bun to reveal a little, tiny pickle, a miniscule piece of cheese and a small dot of hamburger. It is at that moment that we initially heard Clara Peller proclaim the line that would echo down the corridors of time: “Where’s the beef?” The feisty la... more »

Take the "Red Pill" - Reconnect with Nature

Of all the information I’ve ever read, seen or heard about what’s wrong with the world, the most predominant message that comes back to me time and time again, is we’ve lost our way because we’ve lost our connection to Nature, and to the ‘source’. Without that connection, mankind can never be in a state of balance or harmony. He can never be complete or whole. The locavore conundrum

cowboss at WALLACE SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY - 1 year ago
*By Larry Krotz* On Saturday mornings, I regularly walk to a farmers market at an abandoned brickyard in Toronto. I buy cabbages and garlic from a young fellow who tells me he got up at 3 a.m. to represent the Quinte Organic Co-op, a collective of eight farmers near Belleville, Ont., who produce vegetables and beef. Further along, I pick up beets from a friendly woman from north of the city who has two toddlers bundled into strollers. Then apples from Niagara, Ont. When I do all this and march happily home, I am being a locavore. “Locavore” is a word coined in San Francisco (where ... more »

Raw Milk and Crohn's. Is it Really Worth the Risk?

cowboss at WALLACE SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY - 1 year ago
Are the "benefits of Raw Milk" worth the risk? It seems that many consumers think they are. With more and more evidence indicating a link between Jonhne's and Crohn's, and the fact that up to 45% of dairy herds may be *silently* infected with Johne's, and the fact that raw milk is a transmission vehicle of MAP, I think it is NOT worth the risk. Doctors who treat patients with Crohn’s disease have long regarded the illness as a biological version of friendly fire, where people’s own immune systems mistakenly attack the digestive tract. But Washington State University researcher ... more »
