The Freedom of the Press Foundation has posted the leaked audio recording of Bradley Manning's statement to the military court in Ft. Meade. In it, Manning explains why he leaked more than 700,000 government documents to WikiLeaks. FPF also has posted transcript highlights, in case you can't make it through the full 35-page statement. The US military "court" - that is, Manning's accusers - are trying to prevent public access to the proceedings, especially Manning's own statements. We can all help thwart their plans. You may have heard that the draft Affordable Care Act application for coverage under the exchanges is a whopping 21 pages long. Complicated, right? Well, not really. Kevin Drum looks at it and realizes: [T]here's a single 2-page section you have to fill out, and then there are five more 2-page sections for other members of your family. So sure, it might be long if you have a big family, but a lot of it is repetition. And if you're just a single earner? I love buttons. They are one of my favorite crafting supplies and I can never seem to walk past them at the fabric store without adding a few to my collection. The Single Best Economic Reform for the Next Time

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 3 hours ago
Glad to see that Matt Yglesias is talking about this one again: 3. We should beef up automatic stabilizers in the budget by creating some kind of national rainy day fund that automatically releases unrestricted funds to state governments in times of recession. Some elected officials will use the money to avoid pro-cyclical service cuts and furloughs, while others will use it to finance tax cuts and we'll just live with disagreement about the best way to proceed. He also wants to make monetary policy work better, but I think he undervalues the ideological resistance to those suggesti... more »

He should not have appeared as counsel in either forum.

Iraqis Feel Country Largely Unchanged After U.S. Military Withdrawal

In March 2013, the Gallup organization released its latest poll from Iraq. It covered security, foreign influence, political stability, corruption, and jobs, and found that in four of those five categories things had either improved or stayed the same since the United States withdrew its military forces in December 2011. Although Gallup tied the survey to the exit of the Americans, it actually showed that many issues were outside of their influence, and the results were roughly in line with previous polls. I wondered why the BBC were so ecstatic at the choice of Pope

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 3 hours ago
I thought the BBC were over the top in their elation at an Argentinian becoming Pope, but why? In April last year, at a memorial mass in Buenos Aires 30 years on from the Falklands conflict, he said: 'We come to pray for all who have fallen, sons of the homeland who went out to defend their mother, the homeland, and to reclaim what is theirs, that is of the homeland, and it was usurped.' Well that clears up that mystery. The BBC really are objectionable aren't they? And so transparent!

Britain’s first male Muslim peer also alleged that the judge who jailed him for 12 weeks was appointed to the High Court after helping a “Jewish colleague” of Tony Blair during “... more »

Probing Earth's Deep Interior

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 12 hours ago
Nice try, but the experimental result is to demonstrate that the fifth force acts far below any threshold we can establish. It either does not exist or does not matter. I am reminded of the infinity inverse problem of empirical mathematics. Except there it really matters and likely has a lot to say about forces also. So far this looks to be a long shot, but it does open up the question of actually understanding the internal structure of a planet such as ours. We also have an evolving question regarding rock compression and deep gravitational effects inside the core. I am uncomf... more »

Spear Points Used 500,000 BP

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 12 hours ago
As I have posted in the past, when an archeological discovery is made, the artifacts inevitably are a reflecting a tradition that is already mature and often fully globalized. We only avoid that somewhat when we come to South Africa were they really had first dibs in the human experience. Here we round up the first good evidence that stone working is at least 500,000 years old. These are spear points and that is a very valuable weapon. Not so much for hunting as to fend of unfriendly carnivores. A spear can take down a lion as has been shown even in historical times. Taking dow... more »

Phobos Rising

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 12 hours ago
Let me tell you a story. Big Picture: Beginning five centuries ago, Europeans migrated into the Americas displacing collapsed populations brought about by the onset of Asian infectious disease vectors. Lesser Picture: Marlborough defeated the nascent French European imperialism and thus stabilized the borders. Now imagine trying to extract the first picture from any selected historical text of the eighteenth century. Unfortunately that is what we confront when scriptural texts are investigated. Usually a boffo story but leaving the big picture opaque. Phobos was an asteroid ... more »

Afterlife with Robert Schoch

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 12 hours ago
I have serious regard for the work of Robert Schoch and thus welcome his thoughts on the afterlife. He certainly forced us to rethink the age of the Sphinx which may well be many thousands of years older than the pyramids. The work in Bosnia is also reopening the whole question. If these structures do have a technological genesis, then the Bronze Age effort could well have been a reworking. Here he tackles the reality of he soul and builds a compelling presentation that something survives and that was part of the ancient worldview. My own take in the here and now is that if it i... more »

A New Pope for a New World.

Mike Philbin at FREE PLANET - 12 hours ago
this is how he's being hailed by the mainstream media services the ensure our continued commercial slavery, "A New Pope for a New World." Which is fair, if you don't realise the financial history of Argentina with respect to the tactical events that focussed on Manhattan and Washington D.C. on September 11th 2001 when three skyscrapers in the seven-building World Trade Center collapsed from cool office fires when a 767 was reported as smashing high into TWO of them. And 'something' hit the Pentagon's east wing at the *waterline*. "And this has what to do with 9/11, Mike?" Jorge Ma... more »

'ITALIAN FASCIST' POPE FRANCIS

Anon at aangirfan - 12 hours ago
*Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, now called Pope Francis, has Italian origins.* Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, now called Pope Francis, was reportedly involved in the 1976 kidnapping of two priests by fascist elements of the Argentinian Navy.[20] This was during Argentina's Dirty War. The priests, Orlando Yorio and Franz Jalics, were found drugged and semi-naked, five months after being kidnapped. Yorio accused Bergoglio (Pope Francis) of handing them over to the death squads. Reportedly, the Argentine Navy with the help of Cardinal Bergoglio housed political prisoners in Bergoglio's hol... more »

Business 360 5: Reducing Construction and Electricity Bureaucracies

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 12 hours ago
* This is the article I sent to B360 for their March 2013 issue, published in Kathmandu, Nepal. -------------- Reducing various business bureaucracies is one important policy by any government, local or national, to encourage more entrepreneurship and job creation and hence, effectively fight poverty and high unemployment. One good source to measure the extent of business bureaucracies worldwide is the annual Doing Business reports (www.doingbusiness.org) jointly published by the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation. The latest is the *Doing Business 2013: Smarter Re... more »

Alberta still needs a “city party” – a role the New Democratic Party could fill

David Climenhaga at Alberta Diary - 13 hours ago
Typical Alberta Progressive Conservative Party members. Or, wait, are those Wildrose members? Alberta’s rural elite may not appear exactly as illustrated. Below: Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel. Where’s the NDP when we need them? Here it is 2013, the Earth is about to become an urban ... more »

'The Poor Rich': More Tiresome Mainstream Media Obfuscation

Manifesto Joe at Manifesto Joe's Texas Blues - 13 hours ago
By Manifesto Joe Several days ago, newspapers all over the U.S. had wire editors stupid enough to drink another round of strong Kool-Aid. A "story" by Stephen Ohlemacher of The Associated Press went viral in the MSM. The crux of it: The share of federal income taxes that the rich pay is close to a peak since 1979. What this "story" amounted to was cherry-picking of the worst possible kind. It was misleading and generally beside the point. But, let's start by examining the thesis: *For 2013, families with incomes in the top 20 percent of the nation will pay an average of 27.2 perce... more »

NEW ISRAELI GOVERNMENT DESIGNED FOR WEST BANK SETTLERS

Just a quick observation today. *Ha’aretz* commentator Barak Ravid today described the likely make up of the next Netanyahu government and it looks almost as though it has been exclusively designed to satisfy just about every desire of current and future Jewish settlers that want to live and expand in the West Bank. The Palestinian people can kiss any prospect of a state of their own goodbye if the new Israeli government get their way.
