Shroud of Turin, the Sequel, Coming to Your TV

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 18 minutes ago
In one of his final acts as Pope, Benny "the Rat" Ratzinger, signed off on another television documentary about the Shroud of Turin. We haven't seen the Shroud for 40-years since Pope Paul XI allowed it to be shown on TV in 1973. Previous research suggested it was actually a medieval mock-up, not the real deal, but now we'll have some other researchers disputing the earlier researchers and claiming that it does indeed date back to the time of Jesus.

Scanning the news these past few days reminded me again and again why I've been trying to divest myself of political blogging for years, now. In case you still needed a reason to boycott Wal-Mart, hate Wal-Mart, protest Wal-Mart, picket Wal-Mart, avoid Wal-Mart like the plague, I think this might finally be the breaking point for those die-hards who still think it's worth it to stand in a sweaty line for an hour to save 10 cents on a bottle of Chinese shampoo. Store executives, worried about recent bad sales figures and competition in the indigent consumer market from the Dollar Store franchise and Amazon, have hit upon a novel idea to suck every last bit of economic marrow from the emaciated public -- use desperate Wal-M... more »

A (convoluted?) thought experiment: Imagine yourself to be a pro-EU, pro-euro commentator here in the UK. You are crafting a daily series of articles about the eurozone which are being published over the course of a week. Your intention is to accentuate the positive about the EU and the euro and to persuade your largely skeptical readers that things aren't as bad as they think they are in the eurozone, even given recent events in Cyprus. You would obviously want to get the trickier stuff out of the way early on and then end your series on an optimistic note. Given that optimis... more »

Carol Goar writes that three buzzords have recently been added to the Newspeak Dictionary: The first is *governance,* an amorphous word that covers everything from the way a leader wields power to the way a small charity accounts to its donors. Yet politicians, bureaucrats, business executives, non-profit leaders and pundits use the term as if everyone knows — or ought to know — what they’re talking about. The huge take home here is that exercising does not counter the negative effects of a sit down job. What does though is a stand up desk. The obvious answer is a hydraulic lift or its equivalent for every work station desk. It has to be comfortable you use your key board while standing and an adjustable desk makes that possible. Even easier, tilt your flat screen back about twenty degrees and get an eight inch base to set your keyboard on. In that manner, you can easily rotate between standing and sitting. That is even easier to work with as either position become... more »

Takers And Makers-- Paul Ryan vs Jesus

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 23 hours ago
Whether you believe in Satan as an existential concept or as a bogeyman-- or, if you're a Mormon, as Jesus' bro-- no one would be a better representative of the doctrine's inherent Hellish precepts than Wisconsin mutinous Catholic Paul Ryan. Once again, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have denounced Ryan's immoral budget that makes a mockery of the most fundamental teachings of Jesus Christ. Paul Ryan's message-- the message of the entire GOP these days-- is all about "takers" vs "makers." Jesus' most basic teaching: *Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the king... more »

Two Simple Questions That Might Just Give You Fits

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 23 hours ago
Two seemingly simple questions. What is information? What is its relation to reality? Give them a shot. You could win ten grand. I'm not competing but questions like this do almost demand answers. Surely information is, in essence, a conveyance. It is the transmission of something - a thought, an idea, an image - to one or more sensory receptors. Touch can be a conveyance of information. So too can smell or taste. We receive information from sound as well as from images. In its classical iteration, information had an essentially tutorial connotation. It was a form of ... more »

NJ Loves Chris Christie?

gail zawacki at Wit's End - 23 hours ago
Wow, I can't believe I was invited to speak on a HuffPo live panel discussion, and brought up climate change without even mentioning that pollution is killing trees! Oh well - it's a complicated subject that most people are totally unfamiliar with, and there wouldn't have been time to explain it. Maybe some day I'll get a chance to talk about that. Meanwhile, here's the segment, which is about Chris Christie. I'm the third speaker in - and then again at 20 minutes, if you want to skip the whole thing:

Debating the Benefits of Nuclear Superiority, Part III

Daniel Nexon at Duck of Minerva - 1 day ago
Editor’s Note: Back in February I riffed on a post by Erik Voeten in which Erik discussed two articles in International Organization (IO). One, by our colleague Matt Kroenig, argued that nuclear superiority gives states advantages in crisis bargaining (PDF). Another, by Todd Sechser and Matthew Fuhrmann, rejects this claim (PDF). After the two posts sparked some interesting discussion–both on- and offline–I approached Continue reading

Amooc Time

Daniel Nexon at Duck of Minerva - 1 day ago
About a month ago I wrote that: The recent obsession with MOOCs has its roots in three interlocking trends: the application of business-school speak to higher education, technology fetishism, and the quest to push down labor costs. It wouldn’t be too much of an exaggeration to say that these are three faces of late-modern capitalism: the Continue reading

*Must Read :Part 1:Cyprus, Israel,Turkey, Syria: NATO and global resource diversion/control before you read any further into the post below, unless you have been reading along here for the past month, minimally.* *Here is where Turkey & Israel come into play.* Recall the big news of Israel 'apologizing' to Turkey? That very strategic, very timely move happened in *relation to Syria's destabilization*. As I had mentioned it would on numerous occasions. We can fly

Sophia at AMERICAN KABUKI - 1 day ago
We are swimming in a sea of possibility. Whatever we desire is right here. All that’s missing is focus. This is all created by us. Thoughts attract more and more of whatever they look or feel like. We know this. We’ve heard it before. Yet we persist in accepting what life “deals” to us. Why? Creation requires active thought. The word “energize” works here. It is an action; it is a doing. You cannot sit still while energizing, and you are never still. Always a thought is emerging on the tail of the one before it. This being that you are is a creation machine! Yo... more »

Salon attempts to discuss the Chicago schools!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 1 day ago
*THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 2013* *We liberals don’t care about black kids:* Yesterday, Salon attempted to discuss Chicago’s public schools. In a rational world, the bungling would be a scandal. The piece was written by Natasha Lennard, "an assistant news editor at Salon, covering non-electoral politics, general news and rabble-rousing." We were struck by one key word in the headline: *Mass protests hit Chicago over school closures* The Chicago Teachers Union is rallying support against closures that will disproportionately affect black, Latino kids We were struck by that one key word: ... more »

How The Civilian Surge In Iraq Didn’t Quite Meet Its Mark

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 1 day ago
In January 2007, President George Bush announced the Surge. He called for two marine battalions and five army brigades to head towards Iraq along with an increased number of reconstruction workers to conduct a unified counterinsurgency campaign. The argument was that the increased troops would help bring down violence, and allow for reconciliation. On the civilian side, more Americans were to be sent out into the provinces to work with Iraqis to find out their needs, and help empower them to run their own country. While the extra forces helped bring down violence in Iraq the civi... more »

As an enthusiastic proponent of fracking, Gene sent me a link to this NBC article Power shift: Energy boom dawning in America that argues, among other things, that due to fracking, the U.S. will leapfrog Saudi Arabia and Russia to become the #1 fossil fuel producer by 2020. Already today, we see amazingly dropping prices of natural gas and many other things will follow. The technologies are getting better all the time. You get the point but you may find more information about these matters. Just minutes later, I opened the blog of Alexander Ač, a crazy professional Czech and Slo... more »
