The Weekly Dogwhistle to the Plutocrats

Karen Garcia at Sardonicky - 9 minutes ago
** (A/k/a The Weekly Presidential Address) ** *Hi, everybody. My top priority as President is making sure we do everything we can to reignite the true engine of America’s economic growth – a rising, thriving middle class*. There will be a continuous topping off of your corporate tanks by the U.S. Treasury. That, and the parallel constant flow of premium grade deficit hysteria-grade gasoline will trickle down, eventually igniting into a final conflagration of what little is still left of the middle class. This, my fellow plutocrats Americans, is the power of creative destruction.... more »

KIPP, Inc. (Texas) Downgraded by Fitch: Will Test Score Derivatives Be Next?

Jim Horn at Schools Matter - 34 minutes ago
Now KIPP CEOs aka "school leaders" aka "principals" have more to pore over on Monday mornings than reports of children talking at school or going to the bathroom illegally, or even reports that test scores were flat last week. Now they must worry about being too highly leveraged, narrow balance sheets, and escalating debt service. With reports of being downgraded to BB+ by Fitch, how will Wall Street hedge fund investors respond? Will Gates shell out another $10 million? Or will the plutocrats who favor segregated chain gang schools for poor children put heat on Texas legislato... more »

Herring Here, Herring There, Herring Everywhere

A harbinger of Spring where I live is the annual herring run through the Salish Sea. The herring in their countless millions migrate south as they spawn, the females attaching their fertilized roe onto kelp. As they spawn their milt paints the dark ocean a pale emerald green. And as they come through it's a free for all for creatures from hundreds of miles around. The eagles come in their masses, their unique screech announcing their arrival. Seagulls and all manner of waterbirds likewise flock to the beaches. Beneath the surface schools of salmon and other predators claim ... more »

What Mattered This Week?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 56 minutes ago
Breaking format, with an "I don't know." The two things are the two filibusters, the live one by Rand Paul and the cloture defeat for a DC Circuit Court nominee. Will Rand Paul's filibuster turn out to have mattered? Yes, if it sparks a cross-party coalition on civil liberties, or if it's the beginning of a more assertive Congress on national security. Or if it starts serious internal change in the GOP on some of these issues. Will it do so? I'm skeptical -- and a remarkably empty WaPo op-ed by Paul certainly doesn't make me think it's more likely -- but it's certainly not impossibl... more »

Expanding Biological Control of Crop Pests

Essentially this strengthens the effectiveness of using altered males to hugely reduce pest populations. Because these males are no longer sterile, they are have normal vigor. The end result is the same ,but should be way more efficient. The battle to suppress insect attacks continues until we can figure out a magic bell jar for our crops. Of course the natural solution is crop cycling and substantial separation while thus accepting modest predation but that seems unlikely for the big crops. Thus suppressing fertility is the best long term solution. *Advance promises to expand ... more »

Ice Sheet Flow Research

What I find most interesting was how a really modest increase in climate was able to feed back into ice shelf mobility. The additional warmth produced larger surface melting on the ice sheets and this melt water increases penetration to the bottom of the ice sheet affecting its effective viscosity. It is clearly quick and effective. It is also a warning that a sudden sharp temperature rise of say two degrees or more will dump huge amounts of ice into the ocean very quickly. This is likely to happen as we pass through the Sirius cluster in the next fifty thousand years or so. An... more »

I suspect that the primary driver of the forty year long Arctic warming spell is an incremental switch up some forty years ago of heat delivered into the Arctic. This effectively constant heat increment has driven this whole warming cycle. If it is driven by direct changes in ocean conditions, then this technology should pick up the signals. In the meantime we will get real data on the condition of the summer melt in the Arctic. This is very welcome to myself who has been tracking conditions from the beginning of this blog. It is really simple. A weight of root below ground produces a similar weight above ground. Thus the most important aspect of production is to maximize the bio weight that is underground. Of course the use of organic fertilizers provides an additional influx of full spectrum nutrition that ensures optimal production also. The short answer is that the West will come over all holier-than-thou and claim that ‘right is on their side’ and that the other side ‘doesn’t have the right to use such weapons’. XRepuplic TV Less than 24 hours after Senator Rand Paul's filibuster of John Brennan's appointment to the CIA over to White House's policy on droning American citizens, Judge Napolitano and Fox News anchor Shepard Smith railed against the controversial policy saying that even the discussion of its legality was "the craziest thing in the world." Shortly after speaking with a Fox News reporter on Capitol Hill, Smith brought Napolitano, a Fox News libertarian contributor, onto his show to get his take on the president's drone policy. Napolitano explained to Smith that this fight bega... more »

Update From Northerntruthseeker

Northerntruthseeker at Northerntruthseeker - 16 hours ago
Hi everyone... As many of you have been aware, I have been taking a lot of time lately taking care of family business, especially with my mother that suffered a stroke about a month ago.... As a heads up, we have now moved my mother to a personal care home where she can be properly taken care of, and I and other members of my family have spent a lot of time recently with the move, and making sure she is settled in to her new environs.... I want to thank everyone again for their patience and understanding... I will be still spending some time over the next while visiting my mother... more »

Canada Is Israeli Occupied Territory: Canadian Zio-Stooge John Baird Says Palestine Will Suffer Consequences From Canada If It Rightfully Brings Israel To International Courts For Its Genocides!

Northerntruthseeker at Northerntruthseeker - 16 hours ago
Canada is more and more these days showing that it is nothing more than Israeli occupied territory... We have seen recently where the criminal Canadian shill Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, has bent over and kissed Jewish ass and claimed openly that "Israel has a friend in Canada"... It is pathetic to realize that this nation that I truly love, has now become totally subservient to Jewish interests.. And in some ways even more than the United States! But now, I came across an absolutely revolting article from the National Post, at www.nationalpost.com, where the Canadian shill forei... more »

Re. the jobs numbers: Uh-oh, watch that EPOP, says Dean Baker -- participation in the labor force is dropping

KenInNY at DownWithTyranny! - 18 hours ago
*"The unemployment rate fell to 7.7 percent, but this drop was largely attributable to a decline in labor force participation. The employment-to-population ratio (EPOP) was unchanged at 58.6 percent, exactly the same as the rate in February of 2012 and just 0.4 percentage points above the low hit in the summer of 2011. This compares with an EPOP of 63.0 percent in 2007. Is the Weakness of the Liberal Order Overblown?

Josh Busby at Duck of Minerva - 18 hours ago
Last week, Naazneen Barma, Ely Ratner, and Steven Weber offered “The Mythical Liberal Order,” a provocative update to their earlier article on the world without the West. They sought to puncture certain mythologies about the strength of the liberal order, that it never was a strong as defenders thought: its decline is much exaggerated since Continue reading

“Have you ever seen the Pleiades star cluster? Even if you have, you probably have never seen it like this: all dusty. Perhaps the most famous star cluster on the sky, the bright stars of the Pleiades can be seen without binoculars from even the depths of a light-polluted city. With a long exposure from a dark location, though, the dust cloud surrounding the Pleiades star cluster becomes very evident. The above exposure took about 30 hours and covers a sky area several times the size of the full moon. *Click image for larger size.* Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the P... more »

Riffing off Sam Stein, Greg Sargent flags the disconnect inside the Beltway bubble between the Villagers view of the sequester and the reality of the cuts on the streets. The insiders are all about who's winning the optics game and hurling themselves en masse onto the fainting couches about the cancelled White House tours. The outsiders, meaning the vast majority of the population, have greater concerns that are finally showing up on their local news stations. Most people haven't paid attention because they're bored with the endless Congressional theatrics that so obsesses the na... more »

Actual Condition

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 21 hours ago
Law professor Adam Winkler has a TNR piece today arguing...well, he doesn't quite argue that the filibuster is unconstitutional, but goes through the case against it and sort of suggests that it is unconstitutional but that there's nothing that can be done about it outside of the Senate. I agree with that last point: the courts aren't going to step in. But, once again: like it or not, there's really just no way to get around "Each house may determine the rule of its proceedings." If the Senate wants to run things so that bills and nominations need 60 votes, they can do it. I'll also... more »

US-British Al Qaeda Airlift: 3,000 Tons of Weapons Fuel Syria's Destruction

Land Destroyer at Land Destroyer - 21 hours ago
*March 9, 2013* (LD) - The primary reason, we are told, that the West must immediately begin wider operations to support the so-called Syrian rebels is to head off extremists - namely Al Qaeda, from overrunning Syria. This narrative has been sold for nearly a year now as it has become evidently clear that all major offensives in Syria against the Syrian people and their government have been led by Al Qaeda terrorist fronts, including most notoriously, Jabhat al-Nusra. It turns out, however, according the London Telegraph, that the US and Britain have already been arming terrorists ... more »

John Yoo, the former adviser to the discredited administration of George W. The man who wrote torture memos and could very well be tried by the Hague in the near future for war crimes is, *surprise surprise*, fine with the idea of a totalitarian regime killing its citizens without presenting evidence of wrongdoing. Yoo's absurd theories and beliefs belong in North Korea, not the United States of America.
