Tom Reed Takes Legalistic Bribes From Big Oil & Gas But Lies To His Constituents About It
Although Nate Shinagawa didn't get any help from Steve Israel's DCCC in his
fight against corrupt Republican medical debt collector Tom Reed, Shinagawa
came close enough to winning-- 126,519 (52%) to 117,055 (48%)-- to make it
obvious that if Israel hadn't been wasting all his efforts and resources
trying unsuccessfully to reinvigorate the reactionary Blue Dog wing of the
Democratic Party (all but one Blue Dog endorsed non-incumbent was
defeated), Shinagawa would be sitting in Congress today instead of Reed.
Where Shinagawa had the resources he needed-- like in blue-leaning Tompki... more »

How long did people have to wait in line to vote last November!
*WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2013*
*The New York Times struggles with data:* We have a *very* weak national
discourse. As a people, we just don’t seem to be very smart.
Two apparent examples emerged in yesterday’s New York Times. Among several
others!
First, a very important topic—the length of time various people had to wait
in line before voting in November’s election. As everyone has heard, some
people had to wait as long as eight hours before they were able to vote.
Obviously, that’s insane—an insult to our democracy.
According to this front-page report in yesterday’s Times, an ana... more »

It's almost certainly overkill, no? I'd imagine that diminishing returns

Passing the hat for basic needs
Hang around Honduras for more than a few days and you're bound to see some
group or another staging what I've come to think of as a water-bottle
campaign.
The fundraising drives are essentially a stepped-up version of passing the
hat, using empty 20-litre water bottles - like the kind on the office water
cooler - for collecting the money. The campaigns are similar to the
Christmas drives that organizations like the Salvation Army put on back
home; it's common to see bottles set out in public places or clutched in
the hands of smiling young people soliciting at the side of the road.... more »

Healthcare Competition 10: Alternatives to Government Health Monopoly
* This is my article today in thelobbyist.biz

Attaining universal health care (UHC) for all Filipinos is among the key
social reform programs of the government. The recent passage of the Sin Tax
law as well as the huge hike in the budget of the Department of Health
(DOH) are linked to covering as many poor people as possible in health
insurance and hence, attain UHC.
I am in favor of achieving UHC based on two important premises.
One, everyone -- from newly born babies to the oldies in this country,

The Logic of "Reform" Hits a New Low
ConnCAN's
“The Roadmap to Closing the Gap” joins the pantheon of
data-driven "reformers" who love to issue heads I win, tails you lose

The Shanker Blog’s Matt DiCarlo, in “The Cartography of High

Building the Great Pyramid of Khufu - Jean Pierre Oudin - architectural internal ramp
an external ramp that wrapped around the outside of the smooth limestone

a single elevation ramp of 1.5 kilometers for the placement of the highest

Solutions to the Middle Class Retirement Crisis
As I have noted in three recent posts, retirement security for those
currently or recently in the middle class is no sure thing. 49% of the
private work force has neither defined benefit (traditional pensions) or
defined contribution (401(k)) retirement plans, while public sector
pensions are coming under increasing attack. The United States has the
highest elder poverty rate, 25% (measured as 50% of median income), of any
industrialized nation bigger than Ireland. An estimated $6.6 trillion
shortfall in retirement savings shows how the shift from traditional
pensions to 401(k) plan... more »

“Intertwined Fates: We Are All Connected”
* “Intertwined Fates: We Are All Connected”*
by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM
“Being aware of the connection between all things can help you in terms of
the broader effect you may be creating. There are times when we may feel
disconnected from the world. Our actions can seem like they are of no
major consequence, and we may feel like we exist in our own vacuum. Yet,
the truth is that our simplest thought or action - the decisions we make
each day, and how we see and relate to the world - can be incredibly
significant and have a profound impact on the lives of those around us, as

World's Largest Wetland in Bolivia
*Trinidad, Bolivia* — To mark the annual World Wetlands Day, the Ramsar
Convention on Wetlands of International Importance has designated the
Bolivian Llanos De Moxos wetland its largest site ever.
At more than 6.9 million hectares, the site is equivalent to the size of
the Netherlands and Belgium together, and is prized for its rich natural
diversity, as well as cultural value.
“WWF applauds the government of Bolivia for taking bold action to protect
these vital ecosystems,” said Jim Leape, WWF International Director
General.

Lightning Round--Marriage Equality Thriving in Europe, Netflix Originals, BP is Still a Thing, Hillary Opens a Chili's, New Rilo Kiley, Postal Service on Tour, More
*The Dish**:* How will original programming like the new series *House of

Spacey is perfect for this character and I'm a sucker for anything with
journalists and/or political intrigue. If their next offering, *Arrested
Development*, lives up to lofty expectations, they could find themselves in
a position to justify the price hike they will probably need to make
anyway. * *

When home is the most dangerous place for women
Honduras, like most of Latin America, has a problem with domestic violence.
I’ve been working through a research report, trying to do a Spanish summaryof document only in available in English.
The report, Violence Against Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, is
both grim and fascinating.
Grim because women are getting battered. The study compiled the results of
massive surveys from 12 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In Honduras, 9.9 per cent of women between 15 and 49 reported experiencing
partner violence in the previous 12 months. That puts Honduras in the
middle o... more »
The Tragedy of Fragmented Rebellion
Guest Post by Lindsay Heger and Wendy Wong. In a recent and rare speech,
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad dug in his heels. While nobody could have
realistically expected him to simply walk away from his post or even give
much ground to the opposition, negotiations seemed possible. After all, the
rebels had made several recent and

New Community Trailer Pop-Pops
NBC has put out a new trailer for Thursday's season premier of *Community*(h/t
*Nerdist*). I was bummed out when Dan Harmon was let go, now it's time to
see if the show without him running it can be a shadow of his creation.
Based on the trailer it looks funny. I remain skeptical, yet full of hope.
Dogs, Not Barking
Things not in the news, which makes them newsworthy.
1. I often stick news about American and coalition war casualties in these
items; the news media constantly ignores fluctuations that I certainly
think are pretty important. The news here dates back to last week. There
were only 8 coalition troop deaths, and 3 US deaths, in Afghanistan in
January. That's the fewest for coalition deaths there since February 2008,
and the fewest for US deaths since December 2008; in fact, it's the first
time that US number dropped below 10 since April 2009.
Also: that means it's the lowest combine... more »
U.K. Debates Gay Marriage-- And Conservative Backbenchers Are Revealed As A Nest Of Bigots, Ready To Dump Cameron
Just before the House of Commons passed legislation this evening to make
gay marriage legal, Margot James, a Conservative Member-- and the first
openly lesbian Member from her party to ever serve in Parliament-- warned
Conservatives that they would wind up big losers like the Republicans in
the U.S. if they stood in the way of history and opposed the big [see video
above]. Most did anyway-- though not enough to stop its passage, which had
overwhelming support from Labor and the Lib-Dems.

As John Kerry begins his term as the new U.S. Secretary of State, it's been
revealed that many of the ambassadors serving under him were major donors

among big-money backers to land the most sought-after diplomatic spots was
especially tight.
Who in the world was Rosa Parks!
*TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2013*
*A glimpse from 1966:* Rosa Parks was a very unusual person. Her personal
history, and her moral development, are very much worth exploring.
When she died in 2005, she lay in state in the Rotunda of the Capitol
Building, just the thirty-first person so honored. Why exactly did that
happen? At the same time, broadcasters tried to give us glimpses of who she
had actually been.
On NPR’s All Things Considered, Melissa Block and Robert Siegel played a
fascinating piece of tape from 1966. Mrs. Parks had been interviewed on
KPFA, an NPR member station:

New weather pattern for Europe & Mid East; Evidence
The missing North Arctic Ice Caps has opened a new path for the cold Arctic
waters to flow south now that there is no northern ice creating a hot to
cold conversion point of the coast of Europe (see 1943 ocean currents map)
The old Thermo Haline Convection Point no longer exists, it has become
diffused into the Arctic Circle. the old South flowing cold current is no
longer in the northern Mid Atlantic.

Zero Dark Thirty gang change their tune!

*Pretty much as we told you:* Last Friday, Salon posted the transcript of
an interview with Mark Boal, screenwriter and producer of Zero Dark Thirty.
“Zero Dark Thirty goes feminist,” said the headline on the Irin Carmon
piece. You could tell that Boal is *strongly* feminist, based on this
statement to Carmon:
CARMON: I don’t know if you saw the review that our film critic at Salon,
Andrew O’Hehir, wrote—
BOAL: I probably did at some point. I have to get on a helicopter—*I’m
gonna sound really douchey, but I have to get on a helicopter in a second.*

Silicon Rothschild
Mayer Amschel Rothschild 1743-1812 By American Kabuki
I have seen a few compartmentalized projects, one for the Defense Mapping
Agency. Just to walk into the room I had to carry a red flashing beeping
light. I am not completely sure this is an actual CIA document, its seems
far too un-compartmentalized for the CIA. If there's a bureaucratic model
of the human dissociative personality it would certainly be 3 letter agency
compartmentalization. The left hemisphere of those organizations never
knows what the right is doing. This seems far too cogent and comprehensive
overview for... more »
