L. Patrick Gray 3rd., the acting director of the Federal Bureau of

that he had finally allowed a record of the investigation to be given to a

It's Gray's first day of confirmation hearings, and it's an utter disaster

When aid is a crutch and not a solution

what i'm reading (and why): for whom the bell tolls
In anticipation of an upcoming trip to Spain, I'm re-reading *For Whom The
Bell Tolls*, Ernest Hemingway's novel based on his experiences in the
Spanish Civil War. I haven't read Hemingway since the 1980s, and I'm
enjoying it much more than I expected to.
I had mis-remembered Hemingway as a harsher, more macho voice. Maybe it was
his love of bullfighting and hunting, or his personal image as a tough guy,
but I was expecting bellicosity and possibly sexism. I didn't find it. The
voice is warm and generous, and he writes with great sensitivity and
respect, and keen insight into human... more »
Call It What You Like - Homeland, Vaterland, Rodina - It's All the Same
On the 10th anniversary of the creation of America's Department of Homeland
Security some are deeply worried about the connotation of the word
"homeland" itself in the evolution of today's American security state.
Could it echo the dark days of Germany's *Vaterland* or Stalin's *Rodina*?
*Once upon a time, “homeland” was a word of little significance in the
American context. What American before 9/11 would have called the United
States his or her “homeland” rather than “country”? Who sang “My homeland,

Well, it was yesterday, but nevertheless: conservative columnist Philip

says that for most conservatives, interest in health care policy turned out
to be a "fad":
The biggest conservative policy victories, such as the advancement of
supply-side economics in the 1980s and welfare reform in the 1990s, came
when conservative intellectuals and activists rallied around ideas at times
when liberals didn't have compelling answers to important problems. But

US Policy Vs. Syria Indicative of Exhausted Legitimacy
*February 28, 2013* (LD) - The US State Department, and to a greater
extent, US foreign policy itself, having exhausted completely their

John Kerry to pose as the next US Secretary of State, it is hoped global

Today is reported to the be last day in office for Pope Benedict XVI (real
name: Herr Joseph Ratzinger). Not that I have any stake in this at all --
to me, one of the most telling arguments AGAINST conservatism's invocation
of venerable human institutions is the Roman Catholic Church. But as far as
I'm concerned, it's time for a going-away party. But it should wait until
AFTER Ratzo is gone.
Pope Ratzo embodies all that is corrupt and moth-eaten about Roman
Catholicism. He may be just an asexual religious fanatic himself, but his

SATURDAY at Noon! March Down Cummins Hill Road!

Ancient 'Micro-Continent' Found Under Indian Ocean
Unbelievably, the one place that I needed to find continental rocks in

The moment of truth is arriving for this bird and it is not particularly

Drone technology is advancing in leaps and it is just too huge an
advantage to get rid of the on board pilot to not think that is exactly
what is about to happen. We need to build a hot drone fighter that is able
to blow everything out of the sky long before China or anyone else does.
From this article, it is clear that the real fight has begun for this

Scientists Confirm Tetrahedral Model of the Molecular Structure of Water
At least we are looking closer at the nature of water bonding. What will
be welcome is when we can add the odd impurity and discover the implied
effect. That will revolutionize chemistry. We are certainly close.
What continues to surprise is the complexities of water as theory.
Everything else appears simple.

Bigfoot DNA Report Published
Not so fast on not so fast.
We have one hundred DNA samples that have been I assume properly analyzed
by a lab in the business and a number of check tests done with other
laboratories. We have results that support two conjectures.
The results are that the DNA has a recent human component in conjunction
with an ancient unknown hominid lineage. We certainly can tell that much
and there are enough samples to draw likely conclusions.
1 The human component may well represent contamination although that gets
less likely as we increase our sample size. I am sure most samples... more »
