Mass Extinction...a Burgeoning Meme
*Death Comes to the Banquet Table* ~ Giovanni Martinelli, 1635 Inspired by art, literature, music, drama and ancient legends in every culture going back as far as time takes us, humans have been admonished to remember the inevitability of our individual deaths. Periodically there have even been cautionary figures who claimed to confront the foreknowledge of the total end of, if not our species, our civilization. Lately it seems such a cacophony is swelling, and reaching a crescendo. Those who, however inadvisedly, attempt to warn people of converging catastrophes, are compelled t... more »

That means we're about to endure another week of pointless debate over the precise methods by which our federal government will impose more needless misery on the hapless population, instead of addressing its eminently fixable economic problems. Fiduciaries do not always act qua fiduciary
Simkeslak Investments Limited v. Kolter Yonge LP Limited, 2013 ONCA 116 holds: [16] Not all actions taken by a person in a *per se* fiduciary relationship – that is, in a category of relationship in which a fiduciary relationship has been traditionally recognized – attract a fiduciary obligation. The presumption that in a*per se* fiduciary relationship one party has a duty to act in the best interests of the other is rebuttable: *Hodgkinson v. Simms*, [1994] 3 S.C.R. 377, paras. 31 and 124. Slow motion disaster
The only sensible thing to do at this late hour would be to just cancel the stupid sequester. But this is D.C. so it's going to happen because, crackpot cons need a Potemkin victory to please the angry rubes back home. GOPers are betting they can pin it on Obama, but the polling says otherwise. A vast majority, even among unengaged voters, know who to blame for the sequester. It won't be Obama. The problem is, though it's being spun as a world shattering disaster, the effects won't be immediately apparent to regular people who don't depend on government paychecks. Heads Up!
Today we begin the final stretch for this month. It is your range of vision that determines the proximity of the goal. How far are you looking ahead? What is known about some humans is that as they age, they tend to trip and fall. It was assumed for a long time that this was due to physical deterioration. This is not true. It is because of change of focus. Some of us will start to limit our options and capabilities, while decreasing our world view. As we walk, rather than focus on the destination, we look at our feet. Fear sets in. We watch only each step we take. ... more »

Have Iraq’s Oil Exports Hit a Plateau?
In January 2013, Iraq’s oil exports went up a fraction from the previous month. The price for a barrel of Iraqi crude did increase by over a dollar however. Oil exports barley changed from January 2013 to December 2012, and was far lower than the amounts seen last year. In January, the Iraqi Oil Minist... more »

A pro-firewall paper
The black hole firewall saga has continued with several new papers. Since the last blog entry about the topic, three Japanese authors proposed something that they call a self-consistent model of the black hole evaporation, probably without any firewalls. Because a starting point is semiclassical gravity, the paper can't be self-consistent, however. Rodolfo Gambini and Jorge Pullin propose that loop quantum gravity "solves" the firewall problem by producing some new degrees of freedom. They extend the LQG algebra to a Lie algebra. I guess other LQG proponents won't like such a here... more »

C) The Chicago, Georgia, and New York protests that inspired the Massachusetts stand. MOFA Defends Revolting Diaoyutai Video
The Central News Agency (CNA), the government news organ, has a piece on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' (MOFA) defense of its revolting, condescending video on why the Republic of China owns the Senkakus. Hosted by a comedian and entirely in Taiwanese, it was supposed to be light-hearted. To wit: Minister of Foreign Affairs David Lin (林永樂) on Saturday said that a short film the ministry released a day earlier was meant to help Taiwanese understand the nation’s sovereignty over the disputed Diaoyutai Islands (釣魚台) in a “lively way.” DPP Legislator Hsiao Bi-khim had our backs: Th... more »
Five Minute Eiffel Tower Necklace
Along with my Distressed Photo Jewelry Tray, that I posted about on Friday, I made this cute Eiffel Tower Necklace. It is probably one of the fastest crafts I have ever made and people always ask where I got it. You will need: An acrylic necklace tile, I used the ones by Mod Podge and they were fabulous. Scrapbook paper with a design small enough for the tile, I also used papers by Mod Podge, they were great! I had no problem with wrinkles. Regular or Glitter Mod Podge, The Mod Podge Glitter is perfect for this craft, it adds just the right amount of sparkle. a jump ring Cut ...more »
The "Tide Of Citizens" Washes Over Spain... As Italians Elect A New Government
Every corner of Spain was the scene of angry but still mostly nonviolent protest over the weekend-- students, doctors, unionists, young families, pensioners... all pissed off about political corruption inside the neo-fascist government of Mariano Rajoy and inside the so-called "royal family," privatization of public services, and the exact same kind of failed Austerity Agenda Paul Ryan and the GOP are demanding for our own country. Over half of Spain's young workers are unemployed. It's a familiar theme-- bailouts for the banksters paid for by massive cutbacks in healthcare. The ...more »

Nearly two decades of no global warming: From the Globaloneyists
*But much globaloney!* Brief digression: A word that came to my attention, attributed to Clare Booth Luce, in a book I was reading some years back. Clare assailed Vice President Henry A. The Pinocchio Index
Carol Goar writes, in *The Toronto Star*, that the C.D. Howe Institute has developed a tool to measure government fiscal accountability. It's called the Pinocchio Index. She writes: This year’s just-released index contains several surprises: The biggest overspender in the country? Saskatchewan by a long shot. You’d never know it from the province’s balance sheet (it has a modest surplus) or Premier Brad Wall’s forceful rhetoric about fiscal responsibility. But the index shows Saskatchewan spent 38 per cent more than it budgeted between 2003 and 2012. It has now displaced Alb... more »

What determines the device and format of music?
Some will say that the tipping point comes when the sales hit a certain level. But is that just the result and what drives consumers to change from eight track to Cassette and from that to CD and from CD to MP3 streamed? Some 15 years ago we couldn’t understand why many cars were still being fitted with cassettes and forcing us to keep cassettes alive. A good friend and media guru, Trev Huxley, told us that the key was simple and the day the car hire firms started to demand CD players in their standard specification the game was over. At that point the car manufacturers fit them a... more »

Giant Sloths of the Applachians
This is all part of the Appalachians of course and we actually have a number of plausible cryptids reported over the years. Bigfoot is of course the most common but we also have the Giant Sloth and a small hominid that is likely part of the Lucy lineage. These are the best suspects. It I have taken a lesson from uncovering the Giant Sloth is that it is way too easy to misidentify such a creature in a glimpse. However if it is in the fossil record, do not discount its presence in the modern era even if confined to a small range. Here we have an excellent report of wha... more »
Vietnam Lizard Being Encounter
I have posted several reports now about these lizard beings. They are all rather substantial in terms of detail and relay a tale of an evolved Terran race established on Earth for millions of years. This is a creditable proposition as even the fossil record supports that possibility. Almost all encounters appear either underground or close to such access. It is relayed to us that these creatures reside deep underground in large formed habitats with ample access to the surface for rare intrusions. Again we are entering a future in which our mastery of material strength will... more »
new Bone Repair Therapies on Nanoscale Surfaces
Step by step we are getting there. This approach opens the door to artificially mold absent bone and then use it as a scaffold to replace that bone. It will no longer be necessary to build out the whole organ or bone. We are entering the age of full scale tissue engineering and ultimately complete restoration of a human body. At this point I see little to thwart us. What is in front of us are solvable problems and what is behind us are formally daunting unsolvable problems. What I find gratifying is that no one dares say never anymore. Even my dentist has got into the sp... more »
Small-molecule Drug Drives Cancer Cells to Suicide
This is a breakthrough using a failed protocol and a possible game changer for brain tumors in particular. I wonder how it may work with a baking soda protocol happening as well to block the ability of the cancer to respond to a direct attack like this. These are simple ideas but we surely need the data and it is safe enough to push that envelop. We continue to see a wide range of new therapeutic approaches coming on board and what is becoming badly needed is way more direct involvement with patients and their doctors to produce a far larger empirical database to support...more »

Fat Free Econ 39: P57,000 Public Debt Per Filipino
* This is my article last Saturday in interaksyon.com -------- The outstanding debt of the Philippine government has breached the P5 trillion mark sometime in March 2012. By the end of last year, the debt was P5.437 trillion. This means that on average, each of the 96-plus million Filipinos as of that period had a per capita debt of about P57,000. Not a good figure to hear. Aside from the outstanding debt, there is also the guaranteed debt or “contingent liability” that is not part of the former yet, but if the indebted GOCC or GFI (government financial institution) cannot pay the ... more »

What Will Political Dysfunction Do To America's $1 Trillion Annual Tourism Industry?
The Administration thinks that by next weekend the relatable face of sequestration for thousands in the middle class will be painful airport travel. Long, long lines and miserable delays and inconvenience. Republicans, the s&m party, think it's their job to add pain and suffering to people's lives. High price of health care
Had to shamelessly steal Alex Pareene's Sunday Bobblehead Review from Atriosbecause something unexpected and not awful happened. It's obvious that Jim McIntyre is about to become the latest in a long line of discredited and corrupt Broad trainees that have been planted in central offices around the U. S. to do the bidding of plutocrat, Eli Broad. When you lose the News-Sentinel, you're a goner in Knoxville. From theKnoxville News-Sentinel : Leaders of the area Public Building Authority are accusing the Knox County Schools chief and school board members of misleading the public about the state of security systems in at least two schools and putting taxpayers at financial risk. "Stop The Government Plan For Radioactive Cookware!"
* "Stop The Government Plan For Radioactive Cookware!"* by Dr. Isaac Eliaz "It sounds like a horror movie: A government agency decides to recycle surplus radioactive scrap metal and let the tainted metal be incorporated into cookware and other consumer items. But it is not science fiction. It is a real, imminent health disaster on the verge of taking place in the near future in the United States. Late last year, the Department of Energy (DOE) released a proposal to recycle at least 14,000 tons of radioactive metal into the consumer market. And there’s a lot more where that’s com... more »
Northerntruthseeker Rant For Sunday, February 24th, 2013
It is Sunday.. And again, time for my usual rant of what I see is wrong in this sick world that the enemy Jews are wanting to subjugate... Of course, I have been busy with family matters.. But again, those are finally under control and I am glad to (finally) say that I am back... It has been a bumpy last few weeks of ups and downs, and now it is time to get back to a sense of normalcy... First, I want to address a proverbial "can of worms" that I opened up (again) in my last full article... Yes, I stand behind my assertion that the Jews are absolutely NOT a race. I have done my ow... more »
The Russian Meteor and Global Warming
I get a lot of email from readers of this blog. Feedback, comments, critique and pointers are always welcomed. So too are fun items like this which came yesterday, from an anonymous but clearly brilliant reader (Thanks;-). Enjoy! Scientists indicate that the recent meteor strike in Russia may have been connected to global warming. In comments sent to reporters, NCAR Distinguished Senior Scientist and Nobel Prize winner Kevin Trenberth stated that the 4% increase in water vapor in the atmosphere can lead to up to a 10% increase in precipitation, and probably even more if it all c... more »

Damascus Syria~ There is a lot of difference between a JDAM and a car bomb
Washington Backs Syrian Anti-Government Terrorism By Stephen Lendman Global Research, February 23, 2013 Make no mistake. Syria is Washington’s war. It was planned years ago. Regime change is policy. At issue is replacing Assad’s government with a pro-Western puppet one. Washington tolerates no independent governments. It demands subservience to US policies. Outliers are targeted for removal. Options include war. Mass slaughter and destruction don’t matter. Unchallenged dominance is policy. It’s longstanding, ruthless and lawless. Western-recruited death squads ravage Syria. The... more »
Sunday Globe Specials: US Lost Iraq War
*I know that is not the received wisdom you have gotten from your lying, war-promoting media, Americans, but nevertheless*: * **"Some officials in Baghdad had been doing the bare minimum to placate the United States and were in fact sympathetic to the Iranian efforts in Syria"* *Can it really be described any other way? * **"US effort to block flow of arms from Iran to Syria falters; Iraq reluctant to inspect planes using its airspace" by Michael R. “Deranging America: Drugged, Indebted, Armed-to-the-Teeth”
*“Deranging America:* * Drugged, Indebted, Armed-to-the-Teeth”* by Linh Dinh “The coarsening of a people doesn’t happen overnight. When I came to the States in 1975, the Gong Show was about as rude as it got on television. Some earnest sap would get bumped for crooning, “Feelings, nothing more than feelings,” but no one ever got screamed at, had their wig knocked off or made to sob in public. No tune ever urged murder, and even a group named War only sang, “Why can’t we be friends?”*** The year’s top hit was The Captain and Tennille’s “Love Will Keep Us Together.” Compared to no... more »
Dine' Angela Davis: The Enemy Within: Navajo Generating Station
Angela Davis, Dine' writes to the Alamo Council Delegate, regarding sponsorship of lease extension for Navajo Generating Station, one of the dirtiest coal fired power plants in the US. It is fed with coal ripped from the earth by profiteer Peabody Coal, which continues the suffering of Navajos on Black Mesa, to provide electricity for the Southwest while many Navajos go without. J. Robert Oppenheimer Questioned The Moral Survival of Mankind
This is an excerpt from the Pulitzer Prize winning biography, *"American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,"* by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. Published in 2005 by Alfred A. Knopf: New York. Pg. 428. "When a congressman asked him if a war fought with hydrogen bombs would make the earth unfit for human habitation, Oppie interjected, "Pestiferous, you mean?" Actually, he said, he was more worried about mankind's "moral survival." He explained his position with an air of utter reasonableness, and though no one present questioned his logic, he left knowin... more »

The Economy: "Bottom Line: Why We Must Stop Deficits NOW"
*"Bottom Line: Why We Must Stop Deficits NOW"* by Karl Denninger “Here's the bottom line folks: These are the major spending items in the US Budget, from 1980 to today. I am ignoring all the ones that don't matter, and I'm also intentionally leaving in one foil often used by both sides of the debate for scale purposes (Education.) Of particular interest (and alarm) is Welfare, which doubled from 2007 to 2010. But- it appears to have come down some in the least two years and change. Therefore, while this is a problem, it is not the emergent one. Those are the three categories... more »
Sunday Question for Liberals
I think this is another repeat question, but since I wrote a thing this week saying again that Barack Obama's biggest mistake has been failing to promptly make appointments, I figured I might as well ask all of you: what do you think has been Obama's biggest mistake? Mind you, I'm especially interested in "mistakes" which were things that were actually within his ability to do. But as usual with Sunday questions, interpret it however you like; I'm just interested in what liberals (and conservatives) think about things.
Sunday Classics: In "Boris Godunov," the Russian people do just as they're told
*Although I titled Friday night's preview post "Long live Tsar Boris Feodorovich," we never did get to that famous line from the Coronation Scene of Boris Godunov. If I could have edited this clip, I would have stopped it at 1:58, so we would have heard just:* *PRINCE SHUISKY*: Long live Tsar Boris Feodorovich! *THE PEOPLE*: Long live the Tsar, our father! *PRINCE SHUISKY*: Praise him! *(This clip of the Coronation Scene is from the Andrei Tarkovsky-directed Unitel film of Boris, with Yevgeny Boitsov as Prince Shuisky and Robert Lloyd as Boris, Valery Gergiev conducting Covent Garde... more »
Sunday Question for Conservatives
Over the last two weeks, Republican reformers have written several critiques that have received a fair amount of attention (I thought Ross Douthat's summary was good and important), which makes it a good time for an assessment: what do you think of the Republican reaction to the 2012 elections so far?
The Biggest Crisis to Hit the Stock Market Since the Last One
*Guest post by Kris Sayce from **Money Morning Australia** * [image: The Biggest Crisis to Hit the Stock Market Since the Last One] What did we tell you a few weeks ago? It’s impossible for the *stock market * to move up or down until the Wall Street whiz kids and mainstream media create a new catchphrase. ‘Debt ceiling’, ‘fiscal cliff’, ‘credit crunch’, and ‘Grexit’. You’ve heard them all. Each time one of those terms rears its head, the market falls. Then soon enough someone finds a ‘solution’ and stocks roar again. Well, it looks as though we’ve got a new excuse for stocks to... more »
Slow Saturday Special: U.S. Admits Using Terrorism in Syria
*I call it that because Saturday is the slowest sales day and least read day of the week.* *"Russia’s mission to the United Nations accused the United States of blocking its attempt to seek approval of a Security Council statement that would have condemned the Damascus bombings as terrorism. The US mission denied the accusation, saying it only requested that the Russian statement include a paragraph that also condemned the Syrian government’s ‘‘continued, indiscriminate use of heavy weaponry against civilians.’’" * * **This is the kind of thing the U.S. does when a resolution condemn... more »

Israel's Strike on Syria
*Here's a different take on it that you won't see in my newspaper*: "*Zionist prospects for Syria aren’t any better at the moment. Tel Aviv’s to intimidate the White House into invading Syria have not worked. Plan A has failed miserably according to the Israeli embassy people attending the Engel-Ros Litinen’s informal conflab. Neither did the “how about we just arm the opposition” plan that originated last year with David H. Petraeus and was supported by Hillary Clinton while being pushed by AIPAC. The goal was to create allies in Syria that the US and Israel could control if Mr. As... more »

Time to Say "None of the Above"
I wouldn't ride in a car with a driver who was too stupid to know when to use the brakes. Would you? Yet that's a pretty fair metaphor for the people who are leading our federal parties today. One of the things we expect our political leaders to do is to steer us away from trouble. They can't keep us safe, not always, but they've got to try. The fact is, they don't always try and usually when they're not trying it's because they're putting their personal interests and aspirations ahead of their obligations to us. When that happens, democracy is dealt a pretty heavy blow. W... more »
