Ahmanson, Jr-- crazy as a loon... but rich Here in California, the name Ahmanson makes people think of great works of philanthropy and of the golden days of mainstream Republicanism. Howard Fieldstead Ahmanson, Sr. may have been a latter day robber baron but he eventually gave back big time-- to the L.A. County Museum of Art, to USC, to what's now the Disney Center (the Ahmanson Theater), to the UCLA Medical Center, to hospitals, schools, museums... his trust has been a force for tremendous good in California. The Holy Trinity, a warship used to land the first Argentine forces in the Falklands War with Britain in 1982, has mysteriously sunk in an Argentine port

Matt at The Coming Crisis - 1 hour ago
Arturo Puricelli, the defence minister, said the loss of the Holy Trinity was due to "negligence in the best-case scenario, or an attack" aimed at making the government look bad. He did not go into detail. The destroyer, which was retired from active service in 2004, took on water at the Puerto Belgrano naval base after a six-inch pipe burst, the navy said. The minister later said, however, that he was surprised that the ship sank quickly while it was moored at the port. First it started listing, he said. "So the breakdown must have been major, or someone opened a value to sink it,... more »

C'Mon, Show of Hands. Who Watched the Debate?

If being underwhelming would attract votes, the Liberal Party would be in for a huge majority in the next election. Then again, if they could win elections by courting Bay Street instead of Main Street, they would also be a shoo-in. Although I've left the Party I actually watched what was heralded a leadership debate. As far as I could tell that was so much false advertising, straight bait and switch. By what they said, and avoided mentioning, it's pretty clear that most of them will back the Northern Gateway albeit with an appropriate measure of solemn reluctance and regret. ... more »

Today I decided to watch the Davis Cup doubles, Czechia vs Switzerland, played in Geneva, a few miles from the LHC. A reason was that some friends and relatives did the same. Not a huge surprise, but it certainly could have gone the other way...and his decision probably moves the seat from about a 40% chance for a GOP win to around a 10% chance, maybe less. (And, yes, it's also a setback for the younger Senate. Don't want to forget that part of it). Congressional confirmation hearings are overrated as far as their effects on confirmation are concerned. Chris Culliver I never went to an NFL game in my life and I doubt I've even done a post about football before. But I lived in San Francisco for the better part of two decades and the 49ers football news did manage to seep through the Hagel nomination battle noise. No-money-down mortgages are back: Here we go again

Matt at The Coming Crisis - 11 hours ago
It’s 100% financing—the same strategy that pushed many homeowners into foreclosure during the housing bust. Banks say these loans are safer: They’re almost exclusively being offered to clients with sizable assets, and they often require two forms of collateral—the house and a portion of the client’s investment portfolio in lieu of a traditional cash down payment. In most cases, borrowers end up with one loan and one monthly payment. Depending on the lender and the borrower, roughly 60% to 80% of the loan can be pegged to the home’s value while the remaining 20% to 40% can be secur... more »

Coal Embedded Artifacts

Aging an artifact by the material it is embedded in is a serious mistake. It fails to recognize that mining voids are not stable at all. This is particularly true for coal. Any geological movement at all will cause such voids to be squeezed out. This not much of a concern over a few centuries, but over a few thousands of years it is reasonable that little trace is left. Recall that mining must leave pillars behind besides so there is never a lack of material. Thus artifacts left behind in mining are readily embedded. Since we have a working conjecture for modernism ar... more »
