And, of course, if you watched American news media, all the discussion was about the bargain with the Republicans. Would he have the grand bargain? Well, some people have suggested what's being talked about is a grand betrayal." In this video, economist Bill Black states that it's betrayal, but more than this, Black says that cutting the safety net would prolong and deepen the present recession, whereas what is needed to recover is more public sector investment, including the social net (which actually increases employment), and definitely not privatization of present public sector functions such as Medicare and Medicaid, which would cost more while making the poor even poorer and sicker.

I generally agree with Paul Krugman's *Keynesian* economics. One part of
the theory holds that, in times of recession, government should get capital

Old Chicago factory leaves persistent lead legacy
Rachel Rindfleisch at Contaminated Nation - Water Contamination, Land Pollution & Hazardous Waste locations - 15 hours ago
By: Nathan Lamb
An old industrial site in Chicago is being targeted for cleanup by the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), after soil testing found dangerously
high levels of lead contamination, according to this story from the USA
Today.
Now a vacant lot in the city’s Pilsen neighborhood, the site was home to a
lead factory in the 1940s.
The EPA vowed to pursue cleanup after recent tests revealed contamination
across much of the property. In some cases, topsoil contained lead
concentrations 57 times higher than EPA health advisory levels.
The old factory site is in a resident... more »
Fighting Against The Minimum Wage-- More Than A Republican Tradition, A Republican Obsession
DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 15 hours ago
When my job as president of a division of TimeWarner brought me into
contact with what the Republicans call "the job creators," it was never
difficult to talk with my colleagues about why raising the minimum wage was
good for "us." Unlike many of my colleagues, I had started my own
successful small business from scratch and was considered
"entrepreneurial." A simplistic version: if consumers have more money in
their pockets they can buy more of our stuff and we'll make more profit.
Historically, though, it's always been progressives who supported minimum
wage laws and it's always... more »

eBooks Free With Ads

The Victorians gave us the Penny Press, Short form and episodic fiction,
serialisation and book and pamphlet advertising. Some will suggest that
today’s developing digital market can learn much from yesterday’s initial
era of mass reading.
Today we read of another ‘new’ Victorian‘ idea – the ebook with adverts.
We see adverts on many digital services today. You have to suffer the

Black Bear footprints, tent wrecking and chase scene
Mike Philbin at FREE PLANET - 17 hours ago
yeah, this is a weird one: BLACK BEAR.
I've dreamt of Snow Jaguar (sic) before, but now I'm treated to Black Bear.
For some reason, I was following in the footsteps of this enormous beast,
noting both its fluffy backpaws and its sharp forepaws, tracking them
through snow. Then we see (yes, I did feel accompanied) the bear ripping up
our tent. Then the bear turns on us, chasing us.
This is a fragment of a much larger series of nature or water-based dreams.
I get them all night, every night. And I've refused to write them down in
my Dream Diary. I gave all that up, as a kinda sorta N... more »
Florida decides Canadian tourists a bad idea
James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 17 hours ago
This seems a bit strange given the number of Canadians that spend winters
in Florida – especially Quebecers – but the Sunshine State now requires
non-U.S. residents to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) to
operate a motor vehicle.
The requirement came into effect on Jan. 1, 2013 and affects people who
drive down to Florida with their own vehicles (be they car, truck, motor
home or motorcycle) and those who wish to rent a car in Florida.
Needless to say, those caught in Florida without anIDP are subject to hefty
fines by police.
You can obtain an IDP at CAA-Quebec service... more »

They have called for greater testing of products to reassure people there

Minimum Wage and State of the Union
arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
I heard a lot in the State of the Union Address that I have waited four
years to hear. The primary flaws in the system are not been addressed now
but they are not timely either. What is been addressed is actions set to
reshape and encourage economic growth.
Expect a carbon tax system that speeds the conversion to natural gas and
the expansion of the internal US oil industry. We now know that this has
worked very well in Australia were wind is now the cheapest solution.
Combined with a national initiative to rebuild infrastructure, build high

New Dinosaur Fossil Challenges Bird Evolution Theory
arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
What we are learning is that feathers were an early and likely necessary
adaptation for land animals operating away from the water side during day
time. We have exceptions but they are not nearly as successful. The Komodo
Dragon is not going to invade the Great plains anytime soon.
We have gone from doubting their existence to finding them everywhere. We
have also discovered that the descendants of the dinosaurs are around us in
plain sight. It is time to quit attempting to sustain our present paradigms
and rethink them on the basis of a very early emergence of feathering.

Fighter Lasers Coming on Line in 2014

Combat capable lasers are now coming on line in both the Navy and the Air

at this weight, they can be mounted on a ground vehicle also. Actual battle
utility is presently assumed with nothing been said.
This technology can only improve and improve greatly over the next decade
or so. Thus if not now, it is a game changer. If rapid fire becomes
possible, then a radar controlled line of sight defense dome becomes
possible in which even artillery can be intercepted.
It can become way more effective tha... more »

Step by step, protocols are rising that will allow real functionality to

allow healthy progress into the second century. It is not likely to get
