The Good Lawrence and his unsavory twin!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 9 hours ago
*THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2013* *The liberal world heads for the dumpster:* Occasionally, the Good Lawrence makes an appearance in public. One such sighting occurred on The Channel after Obama’s address. First, Chris Hayes engaged in some requisite snark with moderator Rachel Maddow. Theme: John McCain looked grumpy! Then, Hayes discussed the idea that Obama might take executive action regarding climate change, thus bypassing a recalcitrant Congress. He said this might be huge: MADDOW (2/12/13): [Obama] threatened to go it alone and do something on his own through executive action... more »

The kids love the "lobster dance" and the adults like the instructions on how to deal with cleaning a lobster. *You know the rules while I'm gone.* Play nice, use your inside voices, and keep the sand in the sandbox. Since this is a conservative home, there is no need to "share" your toys. Actually, screw the romance and give me the bacon roses.

PUT YOUR EAR TO THE RR TRACKS

The American Indians used to say, "Put your ear to the railroad tracks and hear the train coming." The signs have been around for many, many moons that the ways of the white man are killing the Mother Earth. Yesterday 50 big names in the climate change movement took a bust in front of the White House. Included in the group were folks like environmental lawyer Robert F. Their action was smartly timed as a way to pump-up-the-jam for the ... more »

Rainy Day Economics

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 9 hours ago
I generally agree with Paul Krugman's *Keynesian* economics. One part of the theory holds that, in times of recession, government should get capital moving again by spending on works projects - getting money back into the economy. The theory is that it's okay for government to borrow the money because spending can be cut and the debt repaid out of tax revenues after the economy recovers. It's a very good theory - for the 20th century. It's not clear that it remains valid in the 21st. The theory is all fine, in theory, but it's based on a critical assumption that was reasona... more »

Today the President is in Georgia trying to sell the corporate plan that he has bought for early childhood education in America. Everyone at ED is hot for the Georgia Model. Why? Could it have anything to do with the fact that Georgia does not require a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, or even a Bachelors Degree? Could it be related to Georgia's market friendly model that allows programs to sprout from most any dedicated edupreneur with a business plan? The Carbon Bubble has arrived. It has finally emerged as a subject for consideration and debate. Hardly a day goes by that there isn't some discussion of the Carbon Bubble. This seems a bit strange given the number of Canadians that spend winters in Florida – especially Quebecers – but the Sunshine State now requires non-U.S. residents to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) to operate a motor vehicle. The requirement came into effect on Jan. 1, 2013 and affects people who drive down to Florida with their own vehicles (be they car, truck, motor home or motorcycle) and those who wish to rent a car in Florida. Needless to say, those caught in Florida without anIDP are subject to hefty fines by police. You can obtain an IDP at CAA-Quebec service... more »

The BBC pushing the Labour line whilst ignoring history

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 17 hours ago
The horsemeat purporting to be beef saga is still the headline news on the BBC, well it serves the purpose of keeping the news that the NHS killed thousands of people off of the front page. The BBC's latest piece is headlined 'Horsemeat scandal: Government 'flat-footed' over crisis' and includes the following: 'The government's response to the horsemeat scandal has been criticised as "flat-footed" by a group of MPs. They have called for greater testing of products to reassure people there is not a threat to human health.' The BBC seem very keen to minimise knowledge of a pertinent ... more »

St. Valentine, Join the NRA and Shoot Someone For My Daughter!

jurassicpork at Welcome Back to Pottersville - 18 hours ago
(By Cyril Blubberpuss, Esq.) The other day, I was asking one of my junior partners as I was about to stiff an Arabic hot dog vendor on 5th Avenue by accusing him of being a terrorist with a bomb why I can't marry off my only daughter, Bertha Blubberpuss. I mean, seriously, how many 37 year-old virgins do you think there are left in the world, guys?! And since today is Valentine's Day, your moonbat host JP thought it would be a good idea to let me have the floor to make one last, desperate, impassioned plea for my delicate little girl. Bertha was always something of an in... more »

Jew hatred

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 18 hours ago
Those people who tell you that the Arabs or Muslims aren't anti-Semitic, just anti-Israel are lying. take a look at yet another video example here... The brainwashing of children and the fruits of this brainwashing are there for all to see. Muslim children being brought up to proudly declare their hatred of Jews, their willingness to kill Jews and their desire to die in the process. Any comments Jeremy Bowen, Jon Donnison and the rest of the BBC Middle East journalist staff? Why do you never show such videos on the BBC, would that risk exposing the brainwashed British public to th... more »

Fennel, Chroizo and Blood Orange Craziness

Casey at The Adventures of Limited Eating - 18 hours ago
*Fennel, Chroizo and Blood Orange Craziness* Again from my new veggie and fruit box I was given the amazing opportunity to cook with Fennel. I have never cooked fennel or eaten it, and I was pretty impressed with the success of my fennel, chorizo and blood orange salad. This is a healthy yet luscious meal. The flavors are deep and smoky with the crisp edge from the fennel! Try it out and love it! Serves 3 - 1 tbsp olive oil - 3inch link chorizo, cubed - 1 Fennel, sliced - 1 clove of garlic, crushed - 1/2 cup white wine or cava - 1 pinch of saffron - 2 blood oranges, wedged 1. H... more »

Engineers, geoscientists: only 36% believe in CAGW

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 18 hours ago
Fritz Zwicky would celebrate 115th birthday today. He was quite a character. James Taylor's blog at Forbes points out an interesting peer-reviewed survey Science or Science Fiction? Professionals’ Discursive Construction of Climate Change by Lefsrud, Meyer (PDF) in Organization Studies, a SAGE journal. 1,077 geoscientists and engineers in Alberta (yes, I suppose that those who are good in searching for oil are generously represented), Canada were asked about their opinion on the climate change debate. A cute detail is that the survey takers themselves are alarmists who enjoy using... more »

Iain Dale has lost all grip on reality

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 19 hours ago
For Valentine's Day Iain Dale has posted this entitled The Talk Radio Top Totty List 2013. I fear for Iain Dale's sanity as included in the 20 are Richard Bacon, Shelagh Fogarty, the 'vile VD' herself - Victoria Derbyshire and Rachel Burden. Yeek. The only three ones in his 20 with any talent as well as 'talent' are Joanne Good, Julia Hartley-Brewer and Emma Barnett.

WORLD WAR Z - Brad Pitt - a tsunami of undead fire ants

Mike Philbin at FREE PLANET - 19 hours ago
at last, a film that shamelessly uses the mixed visual metaphor of a gargantuan army of fire ants and a raging tsunami of social detritus in this SuperBowl-sponsored trailer for Brad Pitt's latest juggernaut of apocalyptic unpleasantness WORLD WAR Z. I particularly like blatant the use of the fog-of-war claxon that seems to be accompanying so many of these psych-based mind-game end-of-world trailers of late. And I've never read Max Brooks' book, but my mate Chad will of course confirm my *evolutionary waterflow management* interface/mechanism for a mobile zombie game we discussed... more »

what comes first, the Free or the Planet?

Mike Philbin at FREE PLANET - 19 hours ago
the answer to the question, "What came first, the Chicken or the Egg?" is, of course, The Dinosaur. But that's not what we're here to discuss this fine post-snowfall morning in lovely sunny west Oxford. No, we're here to discuss, "How can a Free Planet rise from the ashes of Economic Annihilation called Capitalism, Communism, Cartelism, like a phoenix or some other bird that might or might not preceeded by the contents of its egg-shell." Seriously, that convoluted sentence just to say, "Free Planet is GO, GO, GO?" Sorta, anyway, there are multiple reasons why Free Planet will nev... more »

Minimum Wage and State of the Union

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
I heard a lot in the State of the Union Address that I have waited four years to hear. The primary flaws in the system are not been addressed now but they are not timely either. What is been addressed is actions set to reshape and encourage economic growth. Expect a carbon tax system that speeds the conversion to natural gas and the expansion of the internal US oil industry. We now know that this has worked very well in Australia were wind is now the cheapest solution. Combined with a national initiative to rebuild infrastructure, build high speed transport and a nation... more »

New Dinosaur Fossil Challenges Bird Evolution Theory

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
What we are learning is that feathers were an early and likely necessary adaptation for land animals operating away from the water side during day time. We have exceptions but they are not nearly as successful. The Komodo Dragon is not going to invade the Great plains anytime soon. We have gone from doubting their existence to finding them everywhere. We have also discovered that the descendants of the dinosaurs are around us in plain sight. It is time to quit attempting to sustain our present paradigms and rethink them on the basis of a very early emergence of feathering. ... more »

Fighter Lasers Coming on Line in 2014

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
Combat capable lasers are now coming on line in both the Navy and the Air Force. That should mean general deployment inside the next five years. And at this weight, they can be mounted on a ground vehicle also. Actual battle utility is presently assumed with nothing been said. This technology can only improve and improve greatly over the next decade or so. Thus if not now, it is a game changer. If rapid fire becomes possible, then a radar controlled line of sight defense dome becomes possible in which even artillery can be intercepted. It can become way more effective tha... more »

Longevity gene for Blood

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
Step by step, protocols are rising that will allow real functionality to be restored for aging humanity. This one is promising because a youthful blood system will surely cleanse the whole biological system and plausibly allow healthy progress into the second century. It is not likely to get much past that mark, but somewhat healthy and energetic is something the wild achieves all the time. We are entering a perfect storm of aging populations and rapidly emerging anti aging protocols to extend those lives and even to restore general functionality. The level of change is alr... more »

Back in Washington, after the weekend planning session in California. Haldeman says that on the plane back, on the 12th, the president "asked for a general rundown on the Watergate thing, and seemed to be in agreement with our overall approach as covered on the weekend." Which really doesn't amount to much, however. Meanwhile, on the 13th, Haldeman reports that now Nixon is "inclining to go along with Gray at the FBI." That would indeed turn out to be an important decision. Also, Chuck Colson is now leaving the White House and the government, on the theory that he'll be more valuab... more »

Mark Levin and a rant: I'm sick of people attacking Medicare and Social Security...

*when this government wastes trillions of dollars on nonsense.* Allow me to repeat: I (unfortunately) am on Medicare. I did not have a choice. And neither did a bunch of other seniors. We did not ask for this. We were *forced.* We paid in an entire lifetime of funds, as did our employers. Now they call this an "entitlement." Let's make this clear. It is not an *unfunded *entitlement. I paid for it. And furthermore, it's not, and never has been, "free." I still pay. I pay a premium every month and I pay extra for Medicare Advantage. What part of that is so hard to unde... more »

When does social change happen? Revisiting How to Survive a Plague

Josh Busby at Duck of Minerva - 1 day ago
With the Oscars fast approaching, one documentary How to Survive a Plague is a likely winner (though may lose out to my second favorite documentary of the year Searching for Sugar Man). How to Survive a Plague is, as I described in my earlier review, an emotionally redolent account of ACT UP’s mobilization to move the U.S. government and the pharmaceuticals Continue reading
