Suicide Attack at Market in Northwest Pakistan Kills at Least 21
An explosion in a market in northwestern Pakistan on Friday killed at least
21 people and wounded 33 in what the police described as a suicide bombing.
The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in Hangu, about
70 miles west of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province. Abu
Omar, a Taliban commander in the neighboring tribal region of North
Waziristan, said in a telephone interview that the attack was in revenge
for the killing on Thursday of a Sunni cleric.

Envoy makes "last appeal" for Syria as officials meet
Senior U.S., Russian and U.N. officials, along with the leader of the
Syrian opposition, were all expected at a security conference in Munich on
Saturday, providing a rare opportunity for talks to revive efforts to end
the civil war in Syria.
Moscow and the United Nations, however, played down Syrian opposition
assertions that its leader would hold a joint meeting with Russian Foreign
Minister Sergei Lavrov, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and U.N. envoy
Lakhdar Brahimi in Munich.

Marxist group blamed for suicide bombing at US embassy in Turkey
A man approached a visitor’s gate at the U.S. embassy in the Turkish
capital, Ankara, Friday afternoon and detonated an explosives-packed vest,
killing himself and a Turkish security guard, blowing a gaping hole in the
wall and raising new fears about the protection of U.S. diplomats serving
in this region.
Within hours Turkish authorities blamed the attack on a homegrown Marxist
organization, and Friday evening Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said
the issue had “pretty much been clarified” because the bomber had been
identified, by a skin mark on his head, as a former prisoner ... more »
Mexico probes if blast was attack or accident, 33 dead
Mexico's government vowed on Friday to find out whether an explosion that
killed 33 people at the headquarters of its state-run oil monopoly Pemex

Rescue workers continued to pull bodies from the debris on Friday and
officials said the search would continue until they account for everyone

There Will Be No Recovery Without With Reform
There are 4 million fewer Americans employed now than the month before the
recession began (I believe the recession officially began November of 2007).
There were 5.3 million more workers during the "jobless recover" of the
depression in the early 2000s after the dot.com bubble burst.
These statistics are from Spencer Jakab "Jobs Environment Changes With the
Times" The Wall Street Journal February 1, 2013 p. C1.
I would like to note that most of the jobs that have been created during
this current recession "cycle," which began at the end of 2007, are
low-wage and part-time jobs.

A great one, from Kevin Drum. It seems that conservatives have found their
smoking gun against the Affordable Care Act: coverage under the ACA will be

Which, as Drum points out, seems to overlook the point that coverage before
the ACA was really expensive.
And that subsidies, which phase out as income rises, mean that for a whole
lot of people coverage will cost less. Also, that plans through the
exchanges will have regulated benefits, so that generally people are
getting more for their money. And that there's a pretty large group of

Signs of Canadians in Algeria plot concern U.S.
Signs that Canadian citizens were involved in the attack by hostage-taking
Islamist militants on a remote gas plant in Algeria are of great concern to
American authorities, U.S. intelligence officials said on Thursday.
While Algerian authorities apparently have not yet provided Western
governments with cast-iron proof, a senior U.S. intelligence official said,
"We're taking very seriously the reports of the two Canadians' involvement."

tiny carved image of Mary, the mother of Jesus, that’s venerated here.
The carving - less than three inches tall - is credited with miraculous
healing powers. Suyapa is seen as a benelovent force looking after
Hondurans when times are hard, as they usually are.
Sunday is the main celebration of the 250-year-old icon. Thousands of
people have been making the pilgrimage to the Tegucigalpa neighbourhood
where the caarving, usually in a small church, is moved to a basilica built
specially for its display.

BBC News - Prison meat supplier suspended over non-halal meat' fears
The horror, the absolute horror...
' A meat supplier to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has been suspended after
tests found that it may have supplied Halal products to prisons which
contained traces of non-Halal meat.
The products concerned, thought to be pies and pasties from a
Halal-certified supplier, have been withdrawn.
Justice minister Jeremy Wright said the situation was "absolutely
unacceptable". '

Our Fractional Prime Minister
Surely any responsible policy making process requires that all relevant
circumstances be considered. If you omit an important factor then you
might come to a false assessment, perhaps even dangerously wrong. Yet
time and again Steve Harper shows that excluding relevant factors is
essential to his policy making. There's a real wanton recklessness to that.
I suppose Steve Harper could be considered 3/8ths of a genuine prime
minister for he excludes as much if not more than he considers.
Take our militarized foreign policy. That appears to have been outsourced

Fat-Free Econ 37: PH GDP Growth 2012
* This is my article yesterday in TV5's news portal.

In November 30, 2012, this column made a rather bold statement about the
economy for the fourth quarter of that year.
The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) yesterday announced that
fourth-quarter growth came in at 6.8 percent, or just 0.2 percent shy of
the forecast.
It was not an “ambitious” figure to target for the fourth quarter. For one,
the growth momentum for the first three quarters of the year was already
there: 6.3 percent in the first quarter, 6 percent in the second, and 7.1
percent in the third... more »

Top 6 Reasons Why Discrimination Laws Are Good For White Guys
I just finished an interesting online live chat with AOL Jobs about gay
rights in the workplace. One of the participants espoused the view that all
discrimination laws are bad and that corporations shouldn't have to spend

old days when discrimination was legal. Trust me. We don't want to go back

Israel's strike on Syria: Practice runs for Iran and target softening
Let’s talk about the attack undertaken by Israel on Syria.
What exactly happened is unclear*. Did Israel strike once or twice?*
Having given this quite a lot of thought over the past day, based on the
many news stories in the main stream *I do think Israel made two hits.*
But, I do not believe for a moment there was any convoy of anti-aircraft
missiles being delivered to Lebanon from Syria. That aspect seems
farfetched. It seems to work best as a cover story.
There are even conflicting reports on who really struck the alleged convoy.

"In a final regulation issued Wednesday, the Internal Revenue Service

Obamacare, Americans will be required to buy health insurance or pay a

The IRS's assumption that the cheapest plan for a family will cost $20,000

NEW DELHI (The New York Times) – Beijing’s air pollution has reached such
toxic levels recently that the Chinese government is finally acknowledging
the problem – and acting on it.
But in New Delhi on Thursday, air pollution levels far exceeded those in
Beijing, only without any government acknowledgement or action. It is not
the first time pollution in India’s capital has outpaced that in China.

must-watch video: how canadian women won abortion rights and what we must do to keep them
The Harper anti-choice brigade is back in the news, this time taking aim at
a different abortion controversy to try to chip away at our fundamental
rights.
Wladyslaw Lizon - sadly, the MP for my own riding - is holding forth
against later-term procedures. (You may remember Lizon's name through his
memorable Islamophobia, which caused Jason Kenney to forbid the wearing of
niqabs during citizenship ceremonies.) When it comes to later-term

procedures in Canada are performed in the first trimester of pregnancy. In

A Time For Sublime Madness
Chris Hedges believes that we face a dark future. What awaits us is an era
of upheaval:
The planet we have assaulted will convulse with fury. The senseless greed
of limitless capitalist expansion will implode the global economy. The
decimation of civil liberties, carried out in the name of fighting terror,
will shackle us to an interconnected security and surveillance state that
stretches from Moscow to Istanbul to New York.
There is every reason to despair. But, he writes, what has saved us in the
past is our power to imagine a better future:
It was the human imagination that... more »
Have The Republicans Finally Managed To Tank Economic Growth?
Tuesday we looked at how David Cameron's Conservative government has used
an Austerity agenda to steer the U.K. into a crippling triple-dip
recession. The next day the Commerce Department surprised everyone by
projecting that this nation's GDP shrank by 0.1 percent in the last quarter
of 2012. The White House blamed the obstructionist Republicans for pushing
the same Austerity agenda that has crippled the British economy-- not to
mention the economies of Spain, Greece, Italy, Ireland and Portugal, all of
which have cut back on government spending in the face of economic
slowdowns.... more »

Unfortunately, as long as there are those who are psychologically compelled

Since ALEC's inception they have been bashing our government.

The deal is alleged to have been set up in 2008, at the height of the

Israeli silence on Syria is strategic
Military secrets are not readily divulged anywhere. But in Israel the
blanket silence that envelops officials after an event like Wednesday's
mysterious air strike on Syria reflects a deeper strategy involving both
deterrence and outreach.
Beyond customary concern to safeguard spies and tactics for a government
currently engaged in a graver confrontation with Iran, Israelis see such
reticence as allowing their foes to save face and thus reduce the risk of
reprisal and escalation.

Suicide bomb kills 19 outside mosques in Pakistan northwest
A suicide bomber killed 19 people and wounded 45 on Friday in a crowded
market outside two mosques from separate Muslim sects in Pakistan's restive
northwestern town of Hangu, police and officials said.
The attack occurred in a tight lane that houses both a Shi'ite and a Sunni
Muslim mosque. Some officials said the anti-Taliban Sunni Supreme Council
often holds its meetings in the Sunni mosque, which was the possible target.
