Peres asks Netanyahu to form new Israeli government
Israeli President Shimon Peres on Saturday formally asked incumbent Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to form a new governing coalition following the
January 22 general election.
Netanyahu will initially have 28 days to form a coalition. His rightist
Likud-Beitenu party took a battering at the ballot box and won 31 seats, 11
fewer than it had going into the election, but it nevertheless emerged as
the largest party.

Sylvia Stolz: Reply To Holocaust Denial Accusations
I recently put up an article that contained a most amazing video of a
speech given by a very brave woman, Sylvia Stolz, at a conference last
November... In that speech, she explained why and how she defended Ernst
Zundel at a kangaroo court in Germany back in 2008, on the trumped up
charges of "Holocaust Denial". For her proper defense of that brave man,
she herself spent over 3 years in jail! It was indeed a travesty of
justice...
Now, I want to present the followup video where Sylvia Stolz defends her
actions and speech at that November conference. I have that video right

No-money-down mortgages are back: Here we go again
It’s 100% financing—the same strategy that pushed many homeowners into
foreclosure during the housing bust. Banks say these loans are safer:
They’re almost exclusively being offered to clients with sizable assets,
and they often require two forms of collateral—the house and a portion of
the client’s investment portfolio in lieu of a traditional cash down
payment.
In most cases, borrowers end up with one loan and one monthly payment.
Depending on the lender and the borrower, roughly 60% to 80% of the loan
can be pegged to the home’s value while the remaining 20% to 40% can be

Coal Embedded Artifacts
Aging an artifact by the material it is embedded in is a serious mistake.
It fails to recognize that mining voids are not stable at all. This is
particularly true for coal. Any geological movement at all will cause such
voids to be squeezed out. This not much of a concern over a few centuries,
but over a few thousands of years it is reasonable that little trace is
left.
Recall that mining must leave pillars behind besides so there is never a
lack of material. Thus artifacts left behind in mining are readily embedded.

Steven Chu quits, misunderstands the end of Stone Age

Energy Secretary Chu steps down, blasts climate-change skeptics (Yahoo News)
His final words are all about the climate skeptics. He boasts that "only"
1% of the nonsensical green projects he has funded have gone bankrupt.
Well, these are low standards, indeed. A project should only make one happy
when it repays all the initial investments, expenses, and subsidies, not
while it manages to avoid bankruptcy by exploiting the "nest" that's been

More than 40 huge sinkholes open up all over Pennsylvania's capital... but the city is too broke to fix them
Officials in Pennsylvania's state capital are dealing with a deep issue
they can't afford to fix: 41 massive sinkholes throughout the city running
as wide as 50 feet and as deep as a typical grave. The mix of loose sandy
soil and century-old leaking water pipes underlying Harrisburg's streets
have made the area susceptible to such holes, city officials say. But the
city is too broke to replace many of the aging pipes as it deals with
ongoing budget woes and the looming threat of bankruptcy.

These statistics are from Spencer Jakab "Jobs Environment Changes With the

this current recession "cycle," which began at the end of 2007, are

7 people stabbed in random attack in Vancouver West End
Police say a man ran through the hallways of a Vancouver apartment
building, slashing seven people in what they believe was a completely
random attack,
Sgt. Randy Fincham said Friday seven people were injured in the high rise
building on the city's west end during the attack Thursday night. Six
people were taken to hospital and one woman remains in critical condition.
Another bystander was treated at the scene and released.
The 33-year-old male suspect, who was not a resident of the building, was
taken into custody Thursday night.

Stone Age tribe kills fishermen who strayed on to island
One of the world's last Stone Age tribes has murdered two fishermen whose
boat drifted on to a desert island in the Indian Ocean.
The Sentinelese, thought to number between 50 and 200, have rebuffed all
contact with the modern world, firing a shower of arrows at anyone who
comes within range.
They are believed to be the last pre-Neolithic tribe in the world to remain
isolated and appear to have survived the 2004 Asian tsunami.
The two men killed, Sunder Raj, 48, and Pandit Tiwari, 52, were fishing
illegally for mud crabs off North Sentinel Island, a speck of land in the

16-year-old screamed as he was hacked to death with swords in central London
A mother was forced to stand at a police cordon and watch as her
16-year-old son bled to death after he was stabbed to death with "swords"
in a busy central London street.
The boy, who has not been named, was heard screaming for his life as he was
attacked in Lupus street, Pimlico, shortly before 7pm yesterday,
eyewitnesses have claimed.
He was rushed to hospital where he died from his wounds, becoming the first
teenager to be killed in London this year.
Scotland Yard have launched a murder inquiry and said that they are keeping
an “open mind” on the motive for the attack.

Congratulations to Jim Stock
President Obama has appointed my Harvard colleague Jim Stock to be a member
of the Council of Economic Advisers.
Catch of the Day
A great one, from Kevin Drum. It seems that conservatives have found their
smoking gun against the Affordable Care Act: coverage under the ACA will be
really expensive!
Which, as Drum points out, seems to overlook the point that coverage before
the ACA was really expensive.
And that subsidies, which phase out as income rises, mean that for a whole
lot of people coverage will cost less. Also, that plans through the
exchanges will have regulated benefits, so that generally people are
getting more for their money. And that there's a pretty large group of
people who want but can't get ... more »
The Republican Party War Against Women... Sputtering A Little
The GOP has hired consultants to talk to Members of Congress about the
right way to discuss Hispanics, immigrants, minorities and women in public
without offending them. That's not *really* a step in the right direction
because... well, it just addresses how they talk about them publicly, not
how they formulate policy that impacts their lives. And reauthorizing the
Violence Against Women Act-- which notorious woman-hater Miss McConnell has
kept bottled up-- is a good example that it isn't what they say that's
important; it's how they vote. Thursday only 33 of them (+ honorary

*Who the heck is E. D. Hirsch:* We’ve always been puzzled by E. D. Hirsch,
the well-known—
Well darn it, there we go again! Who the heck *is* E. D. Hirsch?
Kevin Drum does a post today about Hirsch’s latest education pronouncement,
in which Hirsch says it’s good for a student to have a large vocabulary. Or
something like that. (Yes, we’ve read the whole piece, at City Journal.)
As always, Hirsch’s somewhat fuzzy piece made us wonder who he is. We often
get a “Being There” feel when we read pieces by Hirsch.
Who the heck is E. D. Hirsch? We journeyed to ... more »
Israeli warplanes reportedly conduct ‘mock raids’ over Lebanon
Israel Air Force jets on Friday night flew low over southern Lebanon and
carried out “mock raids,” Lebanese National News Agency reported.
The government outlet said that Israel planes were reported by its
correspondents over the southern Lebanese towns of Nabatieh, Tuffah,
Marjayoun and Bint Jbeil.
Earlier on Friday, a Lebanese security official reported that Israeli
warplanes flew over southern Lebanon and were headed toward the eastern
Bekaa Valley that borders Syria. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line
with regulations.

Demonizing Late-Term Abortion Must Stop
Because Canadians are ignorant on the facts of abortion in Canada*, the
Fetus Lobby® is able to get away with repeated -- and unrefuted -- lies and
distortions.
Like this from Jonathan Kay today. Writing about Vellacott et al.'s
ridiculous grandstanding, he says:
The fact is that Canada is the only nation in the Western world without *any
* abortion law. It is perfectly legal in Canada to have or perform an
abortion — for any reason, or no reason at all — at 20, 25, 30 or 35 weeks
gestation. This is a disturbing state of affairs.
While this is true in the strictly legal sense, it i... more »

Signs of Canadians in Algeria plot concern U.S.
Signs that Canadian citizens were involved in the attack by hostage-taking
Islamist militants on a remote gas plant in Algeria are of great concern to
American authorities, U.S. intelligence officials said on Thursday.
While Algerian authorities apparently have not yet provided Western
governments with cast-iron proof, a senior U.S. intelligence official said,
"We're taking very seriously the reports of the two Canadians' involvement."

Dozens hurt as protesters petrol bomb Egypt's palace
Dozens of Egyptian protesters were wounded on Friday when youths hurling
petrol bombs at President Mohamed Mursi's palace clashed with riot police,
as thousands took to the streets to demand the overthrow of the Islamist
leader.
Youths threw petrol bombs and shot fireworks at the outer wall of Mursi's
Cairo presidential compound as night fell, and police responded by firing
water cannon and tear gas.

Turkey: US Embassy Attack 'Act Of Terror'
A suicide bomber has carried out an attack at an entrance to the US embassy
in the Turkish capital Ankara, killing himself and a guard.
The bomber's device went off as he was going through an X-ray machine at a
security gatehouse, Sky sources said.
The White House condemned the suicide bombing as a "terrorist attack," but
said it did not yet know who was behind it.

Maybe it's time to stop waiting for a miracle
It’s the festival of Our Lady of Suyapa in Honduras, a celebration of a
tiny carved image of Mary, the mother of Jesus, that’s venerated here.
The carving - less than three inches tall - is credited with miraculous
healing powers. Suyapa is seen as a benelovent force looking after
Hondurans when times are hard, as they usually are.
Sunday is the main celebration of the 250-year-old icon. Thousands of
people have been making the pilgrimage to the Tegucigalpa neighbourhood
where the caarving, usually in a small church, is moved to a basilica built
specially for its display.

BBC News - Prison meat supplier suspended over non-halal meat' fears
The horror, the absolute horror...
' A meat supplier to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has been suspended after
tests found that it may have supplied Halal products to prisons which
contained traces of non-Halal meat.
The products concerned, thought to be pies and pasties from a
Halal-certified supplier, have been withdrawn.
Justice minister Jeremy Wright said the situation was "absolutely
unacceptable". '

Our Fractional Prime Minister
Surely any responsible policy making process requires that all relevant
circumstances be considered. If you omit an important factor then you
might come to a false assessment, perhaps even dangerously wrong. Yet
time and again Steve Harper shows that excluding relevant factors is
essential to his policy making. There's a real wanton recklessness to that.
I suppose Steve Harper could be considered 3/8ths of a genuine prime
minister for he excludes as much if not more than he considers.
Take our militarized foreign policy. That appears to have been outsourced

Fat-Free Econ 37: PH GDP Growth 2012
* This is my article yesterday in TV5's news portal.
-----------
In November 30, 2012, this column made a rather bold statement about the
economy for the fourth quarter of that year.
The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) yesterday announced that
fourth-quarter growth came in at 6.8 percent, or just 0.2 percent shy of
the forecast.
It was not an “ambitious” figure to target for the fourth quarter. For one,
the growth momentum for the first three quarters of the year was already
there: 6.3 percent in the first quarter, 6 percent in the second, and 7.1
percent in the third... more »
