Pono: Rock and Roll Can Never Die
Neil Young, the musician, is now 67 and has lived through the last half
century of changing music scenes, business models, formats and even
channels. From his early Ontario days, through his first real break in
Buffalo Springfield, then the super group era with CSN & Y, his unplugged
music foray, his ‘other band’ and favourite Crazy Horse, his anti war
protests, collaborations with the likes of Devo, his place at birth of
grunge and his two time induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Young
has never followed an easy path.
So why, after all these adventures has he decided to ... more »

Majia here: I love honey so I've been following the bee colony collapse for

The bee colony collapse is an agricultural and environmental disaster. Much
has been written about the search for the cause of the collapse.

emphasizing diseases in bees, without acknowledging that these diseases are
believed to be a result of compromised immune systems caused by pesticides:

Invisible Enslavement
The whole notion of freedom can exist only in the contrast of slavery. Without
slavery, freedom would not be necessary. This is the duality in which
we’ve chosen to live. It is a time when we will realize and understand
what it means to be free because we have not been – and we know that now.
The slavery system we’ve been in is brilliant; so subtle as to be
invisible. Visible now, we realize with each revelation just how deep the
enslavement is embedded. It is part of our language, our customs, and our
thought process. We grow up striving to make “more” money so that ... more »

Wall Street Whores In DC (I.E., Conservative Politicians) Still Fighting Against Protecting Bank Customers

It was close, but on December 11, 2009, the House passed, 223-202 the Wall

Symbolism is strangling Europe's union
What does it tell us about a eurozone banking union if the member states
are rushing to pass unilateral legislation on financial regulation? France
and Germany have, in short succession, proposed measures to ringfence
banks’ proprietary trading activities. The two countries have co-ordinated
their moves with each other, but with nobody else. Would not a ringfence be
a power any self-respecting banking union would want to usurp?
The answer is that banking will remain a national activity in the eurozone
for all economically relevant purposes. The European Central Bank will

European Commission too optimistic in economic growth forecasts, analyst says
Even if the European Commission seems slightly optimistic about future

The Commission is cautiously optimistic regarding the EU's possibility of

Tories to announce tougher sentences: Mr. Kennedy said that currently, too many kids either end up in prison or in the country’s health-care system as they “run away from the pain that has happened in their life.”
So let's have more jail and longer sentences to keep more kids inside?
Mandatory minimum prison works (or may work) for economic crimes like fraud
or middle class crimes like impaired driving. They do not work for crimes
coming from irrational impulses.
If we want mandatory anything it should be mandatory treatment orders; and
tougher enforcement of mandatory reporting requirements. That's not seen
as very progressive but it could actually work and make a difference to
society.

Rule of Law 18: Damaso and Carlos Celdran Conviction
Private property, property rights and their protection are the cornerstone
of a free and economically dynamic society. If trust and sanctity of
private property is assured, people can conduct businesses easily and
peacefully. And the economy can grow rather fast as sources of economic
instability are reduced if not eliminated.
If, however, other people can say, “his car is also my car; his house is
also our house” and comes to use other people’s car by force, or enter
other people’s house by force and take away anything that he likes, then
society can easily degenerate into chaos ... more »

Municipal Waste Conversion to Diesel
I do not have the material on the originator but they obviously have a
deliverable. We also get no idea of the process energetics or catalyst
efficiencies. However the simple achievement on its own is extremely
promising. This result can be also produced by high pressure reforming, or
close enough.
If it can be done well enough and cheap enough then this is certainly
important. Partial reforming could isolate the non organics, hopefully
eliminate organic acids in the tar and convert a serious portion into fuel
that as stated can then be polished to commercial standards.... more »

A bit of nonsense in terms of interpretation, yet this cleanly polices up

Nature's Death Formula
I find it curious that nature actually chooses to adhere to this formula
by enhancing elephant cell efficiency. There is no obvious reason to even
do this. This is a subtle question but possibly an important question.
What is plain is that the three quarter power rules prevails for life as
we know it or at least for two standard deviations.
Since we are now managing to reverse aging or at least to slow or even
halt it, it will be interesting to observe the effect on this rule. Real
reversal may run into something more subtle.

Allah Keeps His Promises: Jerusalem Belongs to Israel
I am somewhat taken aback by this article inasmuch as I have never
understood the deep roots of the Christian Judaic prophetic strain in Islam

well understood by a careful study of the text. Thus we are left with the

Three bodies found at Mexico Pemex blast site, toll reaches 36
Mexican rescue workers found three more bodies over the weekend amid the
rubble of a deadly blast that tore through state oil firm Pemex's main

The death toll from Thursday's explosion stands at 36, Pemex said via

building's basement and could soon call off their search. One person was

Spain's opposition Socialist Party called yesterday for the resignation of

Nuclear storage clean-up bill could cost £70bn
Britain is storing an "extraordinary accumulation of hazardous nuclear
waste" in "outdated facilities" which will cost nearly £70bn to clean up,
MPs have warned the Government.
Almost all of the major nuclear-decommissioning projects at the Sellafield

according to a Parliamentary inquiry into Britain’s “failing”

For South Koreans, a familiar tone from Pyongyang

Lee, now 46, has children of her own, who do not have such exercises at

It represents the attitude shift over recent decades of tension between the
two Koreas. South Koreans have become accustomed to living next to their

Rebels: A Journey Underground #1 - Society's Shadow
A quote from the documentary "Rebels: A Journey Underground #1 - Society's
Shadow":
"History is shaped by dissent. Civilization harbors rebels. Those who
struggle for possession of the future against conformist authority. Taboos
are broken. Forbidden knowledge is received. The fringes of society give us
visionaries. Rebels reject censorship and they open doors to new
perception."

Jonathan Kay to the rescue of patriarchy!!!
*Shorter* Jonathan Kay: women lie, women are murderous, women make men do
evil things.
And so, to protect society from homicidal women, he opines that CPC
politicians should pass a law that would give government "oversight' in
determining a specific gestational minute when an abortion is no longer a
therapeutic medical intervention, but a CRIME.
Never mind that in Canada for the last 25 years, the public health care
system has efficiently regulated the termination of unwanted or
life-threatening pregnancies by applying medical protocols, procedures and
restrictions.

North Korea may actually be planning two nuclear weapons tests, not just one
North Korea has virtually finished preparations for nuclear tests in two
tunnels at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in North Hamgyong Province,
observers believe.
A South Korean government source said analysis of satellite images showed
brisk activity of support vehicles and personnel at a tunnel on the
southern side of the test site, and on Saturday the area was cleaned and
personnel left.
Intelligence agencies suspect that this means a nuclear test is imminent.
Preparations at a tunnel on the western side of the site were apparently
completed earlier.

Mini Drones: Army Deploys Tiny Helicopters (Which of course will never be abused)
British troops are using a nano drone just 10cm long and weighing 16 grams
on the front line in Afghanistan to provide vital information on the ground.
They are the first to use the state-of-the-art handheld tiny surveillance
helicopters, which relay reliable full motion video and still images back
to the devices' handlers in the battlefield.
The Black Hornet Nano Unmanned Air Vehicle is the size of a child's toy,
measuring just 10cm (4 ins) by 2.5cm (1 inch), and is equipped with a tiny

“The effectiveness of particular cultures for particular things can be of
the highest importance. Much—perhaps most—of human history cannot be
understood without understanding such things as the conquest of ancient
Britain by the Roman legions against a vastly larger military force, simply

This is tragic. This man was the living illustration for the imagined good

How Fast Is The GOP Running Down The Road To Extinction?
I suspect most regular readers of this blog care more how much collateral
damage the Republican Party will cause to normal Americans and to our
country in the process than how soon they'll go the way of The Whigs... and
the Dodo bird. In the video above, for example, Rachel Maddow and Chris
Hayes discuss how the rest of the world, cognizant of how dysfunctional
Republicans have now become that, U.S. international commitments are now

Marketwatch.com is reporting that, when employees sign up for some

... as companies struggle to curb rising health-care costs, they are
increasingly pointing a finger at workers’ ballooning bellies.
Obesity-related health problems account for a big chunk of medical claims,
insurance experts say, leading some executives to believe the best way to

Cage dogs of Hong Kong: The tragedy of tens of thousands living in 6ft by 2ft rabbit hutches - in a city with more Louis Vuitton shops than Paris
Hong Kong, one of the world's richest cities, is abuzz with a luxury

But the wealth of the city has a darker side, with tens of thousands priced
