The Good Lawrence and his unsavory twin!

*THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2013* *The liberal world heads for the dumpster:* Occasionally, the Good Lawrence makes an appearance in public. One such sighting occurred on The Channel after Obama’s address. First, Chris Hayes engaged in some requisite snark with moderator Rachel Maddow. Theme: John McCain looked grumpy! Then, Hayes discussed the idea that Obama might take executive action regarding climate change, thus bypassing a recalcitrant Congress. He said this might be huge: MADDOW (2/12/13): [Obama] threatened to go it alone and do something on his own through executive action... more »

*I'm off to work.* Yesterday I did whole lobsters and lobster tails at work. I've discovered it's a lot of fun to play with a thawed out lobster. The kids love the "lobster dance" and the adults like the instructions on how to deal with cleaning a lobster. *You know the rules while I'm gone.* Play nice, use your inside voices, and keep the sand in the sandbox. Since this is a conservative home, there is no need to "share" your toys. Actually, screw the romance and give me the bacon roses.

PUT YOUR EAR TO THE RR TRACKS

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 35 minutes ago
The American Indians used to say, "Put your ear to the railroad tracks and hear the train coming." Yesterday 50 big names in the climate change movement took a bust in front of the White House. Included in the group were folks like environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr.; Bill McKibben, Founder of 350.org; Julian Bond, civil rights leader and former president of the NAACP; and Daryl Hannah, an actress. Their action was smartly timed as a way to pump-up-the-jam for the really big rally this Sunday planned for the same location. I've heard that four bus loads are heading to Wa... more »

Rainy Day Economics

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 38 minutes ago
I generally agree with Paul Krugman's *Keynesian* economics. One part of the theory holds that, in times of recession, government should get capital moving again by spending on works projects - getting money back into the economy. The theory is that it's okay for government to borrow the money because spending can be cut and the debt repaid out of tax revenues after the economy recovers. It's a very good theory - for the 20th century. It's not clear that it remains valid in the 21st. The theory is all fine, in theory, but it's based on a critical assumption that was reasona... more »

*1043 Bloor Inc. v. 1714104 **Ontario Inc.,* 2013 ONCA 91 has a useful comment on accommodations by neighbours: [83] The policy of the law in this area is clear: the law ought not to discourage considerate neighbourly behaviour by creating the fear that those acts will later be construed as acquiescence sufficient to give your neighbour rights over your land. Why Does Corporate Ed "Reform" and Arne Duncan Love the GA Model for Early Childhood?

Jim Horn at Schools Matter - 1 hour ago
Today the President is in Georgia trying to sell the corporate plan that he has bought for early childhood education in America. Everyone at ED is hot for the Georgia Model. Why? Could it have anything to do with the fact that Georgia does not require a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, or even a Bachelors Degree? Could it be related to Georgia's market friendly model that allows programs to sprout from most any dedicated edupreneur with a business plan? Could it have anything to do with the fact that less prepared teachers make them more dependent upon the menu of... more »

The Carbon Bubble has arrived. It has finally emerged as a subject for consideration and debate. Hardly a day goes by that there isn't some discussion of the Carbon Bubble. The Victorians gave us the Penny Press, Short form and episodic fiction, serialisation and book and pamphlet advertising. Some will suggest that today’s developing digital market can learn much from yesterday’s initial era of mass reading. Today we read of another ‘new’ Victorian‘ idea – the ebook with adverts. We see adverts on many digital services today. You have to suffer the pop-up 20 seconds, before they let you into where you want to go. Now www.eBookPlus.com , is introducing ebooks with adverts on a ‘with advertising it’s free’ model. A service offer based on the premise ... more »

Black Bear footprints, tent wrecking and chase scene

Mike Philbin at FREE PLANET - 8 hours ago
yeah, this is a weird one: BLACK BEAR. I've dreamt of Snow Jaguar (sic) before, but now I'm treated to Black Bear. For some reason, I was following in the footsteps of this enormous beast, noting both its fluffy backpaws and its sharp forepaws, tracking them through snow. Then we see (yes, I did feel accompanied) the bear ripping up our tent. Then the bear turns on us, chasing us. This is a fragment of a much larger series of nature or water-based dreams. I get them all night, every night. And I've refused to write them down in my Dream Diary. I gave all that up, as a kinda sorta N... more »

Florida decides Canadian tourists a bad idea

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 8 hours ago
This seems a bit strange given the number of Canadians that spend winters in Florida – especially Quebecers – but the Sunshine State now requires non-U.S. residents to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) to operate a motor vehicle. The requirement came into effect on Jan. 1, 2013 and affects people who drive down to Florida with their own vehicles (be they car, truck, motor home or motorcycle) and those who wish to rent a car in Florida. Needless to say, those caught in Florida without anIDP are subject to hefty fines by police. You can obtain an IDP at CAA-Quebec service... more »

I heard a lot in the State of the Union Address that I have waited four years to hear. The primary flaws in the system are not been addressed now but they are not timely either. What is been addressed is actions set to reshape and encourage economic growth. Expect a carbon tax system that speeds the conversion to natural gas and the expansion of the internal US oil industry. We now know that this has worked very well in Australia were wind is now the cheapest solution. New Dinosaur Fossil Challenges Bird Evolution Theory

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 12 hours ago
What we are learning is that feathers were an early and likely necessary adaptation for land animals operating away from the water side during day time. We have exceptions but they are not nearly as successful. The Komodo Dragon is not going to invade the Great plains anytime soon. We have gone from doubting their existence to finding them everywhere. We have also discovered that the descendants of the dinosaurs are around us in plain sight. It is time to quit attempting to sustain our present paradigms and rethink them on the basis of a very early emergence of feathering. ... more »

Union City’s schools are on the march!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 21 hours ago
*WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2013* *Inquiring minds hadn’t noticed:* Sunday’s New York Times featured a striking piece about the Union City schools. That’s Union City, *New Jersey* to you, a city of roughly 65,000 not far from New York itself. As he started his piece in the Sunday Review, David Kirp, a Berkeley professor, suggested it’s an unlikely place for a “good news” public school story: KIRP (2/10/13): What would it really take to give students a first-rate education? Some argue that our schools are irremediably broken and that charter schools offer the only solution. The strikin... more »

*"A Letter from Kim Jong-un"* by Andy Borowitz PYONGYANG (The Borowitz Report)— "Kim Jong-un, Supreme Leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, has issued the following letter to the citizens of the world: Dear World People: For decades, North Korea was threatened by hostile foes with nuclear weapons. With our safety constantly at risk from violent intruders, we asked: How can we possibly defend ourselves? Sequestration-- Real Consequences For Real People Excites Republican Sadomasochism

Boehner and Cantor have both indicated they're willing to push he economy off the cliff again with that ridiculous sequester s&m nonsense they both voted for, vociferously disowned, and are now back in love with again. I have a feeling if ordinary American families know what their plan would do to the country-- and to their own situation-- there would be much more of a public outcry. The White House was kind enough to send out a fact sheet about the impact of the sequester if Boehner and Cantor force it to happen. Here are a few excerpts: Unless Congress acts by March 1st, a seri... more »
