Last week the US and some of their allies shut up diplomatic shop in
various places through North Africa and the Middle East due to a threat
heard on the ‘al Qaeda’ grapevine that a big attack was being planned for
the end Ramadan.

Wednesday carried out a number of drone strikes that apparently killed
seven ‘al Qaeda’ operatives of the ‘al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’

Women Just Don't Like Drones
A Pew Research study has found a big gap between men and women in their
outlook on U.S. drone strikes so popular with Barack Obama. In six of the
twelve countries surveyed, more than half of male respondents approved of
drone strikes although only the United States (at 70% approval) got past
the 60% mark.
The numbers were far lower for female respondents. Only in the United
States was there even a small majority of women (53%) who approved of drone
strikes.
In Japan, men were four times more likely than women to support drone
warfare. In Canada, it was closer to two to one.

Early August 2013
We've headed into August here much hotter than many of our friends back
east -- yesterday, for example, we reached 96.2F. Watering has occupied
much of my attention, as has hiding -- we have a room on the north end of
the house where we can go if the rest of the place reaches 85. So there has
been correspondingly little harvesting or processing.
Green beans are doing well. We'll eat some raw, but as this is a presumed
rare heirloom (known to us as Ron's Grandmother's Bean) most will be saved
for seed.

Use everything
I use medium to large tomatoes in canning projects, especially mild salsas.
I know to keep the peelings out, but don't like the step where you scald or
whatever and slip them off. I want those! So what I do, peel them as I
would a potato, salt the peelings down, add a little vinegar and haul them
out to the solar dryer. That's my dehydrated tomatoes.
The naked innards then go into the crockpot with whatever other ingredients
I want in my salsa, where they cook down to thicken with the lid ajar.

delay as Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki held off on the voting in Ninewa
and Anbar until June for what he claimed were security reasons. Those have
now been completed, and all the provinces that cast ballots have new

the last ones held in 2009 when the premier’s State of Law swept up most of

Fascinating findings by Kristen Coopie Allen today over at Mischiefs of
Faction. She looked at money in state legislative contests (lots of cases!)
and, among other things, found one thing that I find particularly

Vodafone Announces Launch 4G Service in UK
*Vodafone has exposed that it will launch its 4G service on 29 August to
clients in London after investing £900m in the system. *The firm supposed,
it will roll out to 12 other cities including Manchester, Leeds and
Sheffield by the end of the year. Prices for customers will start at £26
per month for a SIM only deal with a 12-month contract.
Last week O2 announced plans to open its own 4G service on the similar day.
O2's lowest tax is also £26 per month. EE, the first network to present the
