Presidents Come And Go-- But The CIA Bureaucracy And Its Priorites Are Timeless
Earlier this evening Ken did a proper Ben Bradlee remembrance. Chris Hayes
did one for MSNBC viewers (above) last night right after we heard about
Bradlee's passing. I was living overseas for the entire Nixon era--
sometimes in places where American news was scarce (like Afghanistan, India
and Ceylon) and sometimes where it was less scarce (like in Holland and
Finland) but Bradlee during the Watergate scandal was such a towering
figure of journalism that even I heard of him. He was part of the reason
Americans held the media in such high esteem relative to other
institutions. Ken... more »

Wasteful DENR Reforestations
When I was working at the House of Representatives (HOR) from 1991 to 1999,
I would attend many Committee hearings. Among those that I followed in the
early 90s was the implementation of various large-scale government (DENR,
LGUs, etc.) reforestation programs in the country, funding and loans coming
from the ADB, OECF (Japan government), World Bank and other foreign aid
bodies. The impression I got then was that there was huge money involved,
there were lots of reforestation projects with little or even zero
monitoring if the seedlings indeed became trees, or the planting was only

Oozing bias
BBC Watch spotted a few characteristically biased tweets from the BBC's

He's kept the tweets coming, however, since Hadar's post and you'll find

For starters, our gatekeepers are gone. It never exactly made sense to

Arne’s sudden interest in improving testing
Sent to the Denver Post, Oct. 21.
Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has been an enthusiastic supporter of
the common core testing program, accurately described as "nonstop testing"
by education expert Susan Ohanian. The common core imposes more testing on
our children than has ever been seen on our planet, and no attempt was made
to determine if the new tests result in higher student achievement.
Now Secretary Duncan ("A test for school tests," Oct 20) says he supports a
movement to eliminate redundant and inappropriate tests. This should have
been done using small-scale studies... more »

Please comment on this article Arne Duncan: A test for school tests. Even
if you have time for just one line of comment - we must not allow these
lies to stand as truth. Thank you everyone.
Here is my comment on the article:
First - we must understand that the call for less testing is simply an
appeasement - and a distraction - from the privatization agenda which
requires immense testing PLUS the full implementation of the common core
standards. The high stakes testing and the common core standards MUST stay
in place if corporations wish to continue ... more »

Government Advertising is soft corruption.
There was a time when goverment advertising made sense. The anti smoking

After decades of warning that inflation must be kept in check, and
years in which central banks claim to have produced price stability -- a
little healthy inflation will do you good, they say -- many economists are
now fearing an imminent deflation.
Falling consumer and commodity prices are on the immediate horizon,
