*On September 11, 1973, a military coup d'état led by fascist General
Pinochet. violently removed the democratically elected President of Chile,
Salvador Allende.
The military coup was extremely violent from the very beginning. The
military surrounded the La Moneda Palace with tanks and infantry troops and
bombed it with Hawker Hunter fighter jets. The president and some of his
aides were besieged in the palace. Allende refused to surrender, and
addressed the nation for a last time in a potent farewell speech. President

Margaret Thatcher, former U.K. PM, has died

It's not that a solid majority of Canadians don't trust Sideshow Steve

I suppose what is impressive, from a Conservative perspective, is the size

Iraq Unwilling To Confront Forced Labor And Sex Trade
For the fourth straight year, the U.S. State Department has reported that
Iraq has a serious problem with sex trafficking and forced labor. Women and
children in Iraq have been forced into prostitution. Foreign women have
also been shipped to Iraq for the sex trade, and Iraqi women have been sent
abroad as well as slaves. Many workers from abroad are also coming to Iraq
in increasing numbers with the growing economy, and that has opened up
opportunities to exploit them. Iraq has laws against both of these crimes,

Mining 12: Political Risks vs. Natural Risks

THE GOLAN HEIGHTS: A NEW FRONT LINE AGAINST ISRAELI EXPANSIONISM?
I mentioned over a year ago that the civil war in Syria was likely to spill
into the Golan Heights, Syrian territory seized by Israel in the Six Day
War of 1967, and now it seems that the prospect of that is fast becoming a
reality.
The question, then, is: Why do the Israelis support the Syrian opposition
in their fight against Syrian President Bashir al-Assad when it has been
al-Assad that has continued to provide some semblance of security to Israel
in the Golan Heights? Sure, it can be argued that Israel is dead set
against al-Assad because of his support for Hezbollah in Lebanon... more »

I know he wasn't talking to me, but since I actually mentioned it myself, I

This is a rare occasion where I don't think he has it quite right.
I don't know what Atrios was reading, but I certainly didn't bring up the
lessons of 2010 as a rebuke to pissed off progressives. Even when I

be most effective. But it seems useful to look back and see how what
tactics worked -- or didn't.

What do you mean, ‘give back’?
Successful businessmen get virtually no praise for what they do in their
day job, only when they give their money away.
This is called “giving back.” It is, say Yaron Brook and Don Watkins, “One
of the World's Most Impoverishing Commands”:
“Give back.” That’s the message sent to successful businessmen. You built a
company? You made a lot of money? Fine. Now it’s time for you to use the
money you’ve made to do some real good in the world.
Apparently, creating our modern standard of living and our modern

Ileana vs Beyoncé-- Is Debbie Wasserman Schultz The Dark Presence Behind The Curtain?
The Florida Republican Party moved to shore up Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's shaky
House seat by giving some strongly Democratic areas-- like the Key West--
to much disliked David Rivera in FL-26. Rivera, plagued with a tough
district and an unending series of corruption scandals, was promptly
defeated for reelection. Ileana survived in a district (FL-27) that has
more of Miami's Cuban neighborhoods, including Little Havana, without many
African-American neighborhoods, just over her district line. In November,
Obama won FL-26 and FL-27 with identical percentages against Romney,

Defending Democracy in Canada
If we don't take steps to defend democracy in Canada we may face a huge
struggle to salvage it in the future. There's a price to be paid for
inaction.
Look at the United States of America for example. Democracy there has
been supplanted by plutocracy. Democratic power has been "captured" by
corporatism and harnessed into the service of the oligarchs, the richest of
the rich. This did not happen overnight. It was set in motion three
