Sunday Question for Everyone (1)

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 2 minutes ago
Off format this week just for a little variety...I won't divide these by conservative/liberal As regular readers know, I'm a fan of John Seary's arguments about the minimum age for elected officials. Currently the minimum age for President of the United States is 35, Senate is 30, and House of Representatives is 25. What should it be? Are there any other changes (in any direction) for qualifications for office that you would make?

*LSU spent a lot trying to quash academic freedom and befriend the Corps of Engineers ~James Gill*~*LSU comes out looking petty, vindictive and dishonest while taxpayers get a bill for $1 million. Will anyone get fired over this? Hell, no. That punishment is reserved for straight shooters. Ivor van Heerden must have been such a one, else the state would hardly have paid him $435,000 last month to settle his wrongful termination lawsuit. On the Fitch Ratings Upgrade

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 35 minutes ago
* This is my article in thelobbyist.biz last Friday. Fitch Ratings’ upgrade of the Philippine economy from non-investment grade BB+ to investment grade BBB is indeed good news. For starters, there are three other investment grade status that the Philippine economy and Philippine-based companies can aspire to reach: A, AA and AAA, with the latter as the most stable, most reliable status. There are intermediates of +/- between these grades, like A-, A, A+. For the non-investment grade, the rates range from D (defaulted on some obligations and can default more) to C (vulnerable to ba... more »

Infrastructure

Haiti's Infrastructure (Photo by John Carroll---April 7, 2013) I just love the word "infrastructure". We all love to talk about Haiti's infrastructure. Merriam-Webster defines infrastructure as: The underlying foundation or basic framework (as of a system or organization). The infrastructure in the picture above is in LaPlaine. This depicts Haiti's infrastructure pretty well. And this infrastructure looked like this before the earthquake of 2012. Nothing has changed about this infrastructure except possibly the cow. Offered on Thursday at Arne Duncan's workplace: Testing Abolitionists We are engaged in a struggle to abolish high stakes standardized tests and to bring back local public control to a public school system that serves the needs of all children who choose it. Resistance is growing among teachers, parents, students, legislators, and unions (at least in Chicago). "There are lies, damned lies and statistics," Sam Clemans said. The Harper government has done its best to undermine Canada's statistical database. But, occasionally, it still likes to use them. The devil, however, is always in the way they are used. In a recent article in the Literary Review of Canada, George Fallis wrote: It is said that Canada has a severe and growing problem of income inequality — the rich get richer while the poor get poorer and the middle class struggles to stay even. The move, which follows a recommendation by Lord Justice Leveson in his report into press standards, has been branded an attack on open justice and has led to comparisons with police states such as North Korea and Zimbabwe. Nothing about the Pope (maybe I missed it) and nothing about the Jews (well only a passing mention). The topic was ‘grooming’, featuring the Pollyanna of the MCB, Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra. One of the most surprising twists for me was learning about the existence of the immortals and divines that operate on this planet.
