KOREA: WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF ANOTHER WAR?

It’s not really a historians function to delve into the ‘what ifs’ of history but it’s not unreasonable to ponder what may have happened had the USSR turned up to that UN Security Council meeting in June 1950 and vetoed the decision to militarily intervene in the invasion of South Korea by the North. Instead, the USSR chose to boycott the UN meeting in protest against the UN allowing the Chinese Nationalist government based in Taiwan to represent the Chinese people and the UN voted to intervene and we ended up with the Korean War that resulted in millions of casualties and brought th... more »

Watergate: Nixon's Options

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 2 hours ago
I don't have an update today (there's stuff going on, but I'm going to fold it into tomorrow's), so instead I'm going to answer a question from comments. I'm confused. The President, Haldeman, Ehrlichman and Dean have now talked through the situation repeatedly, but never seem to have come up with a viable plan that gets everyone who's 'on the same team' off the hook. If there's no such possibility, then what are they doing? These are clever and highly experienced politicians- they must have SOME plan, no?! Surely, at some point someone needs to get the Committee to Re-Elect guys i... more »

*Guest review by Llewellyn Rockwell* It didn’t take long for opponents of the market to pounce after the events of 2008. The crash was said to prove how destructive “unregulated capitalism” could be and how dangerous its supporters were—after all, free-marketeers opposed the bailouts, which had allegedly saved Americans from another Great Depression. If a government can't provide licence plats... Part 2

A little over a year ago, I wrote about the Honduran government’s baffling inability to get licence plates into the hands of drivers. I saw scads of cars and motorcycles without licence plates, and thought at first that people were just ignoring the law. But it turned out the government didn’t actually have the plates, and hadn’t for almost a year. That was a major hassle for drivers, who had to keep going back to the licensing office every month to get temporary permits, a process that took hours. And in a country with a big crime problem, some 330,000 vehicles and motorcycles with... more »

Basically, the path going activists to parties to politicians to news coverage works better than the more direct activists to news coverage path. One of the MASSIVE irritants that swims in the eddy churned up by CON MP Mark Warawa's misogynistic M408 is the twitter spamming campaign in which the antiChoice lobby engages. "World Class" Oil Spill Recovery is Another Harper Scam

Two officials of British Columbia's *Raincoast Conservation Society* have gutted Joe Oliver's assurances and exposed Sideshow Steve Harper's "world class" oil spill mechanisms as an utter sham. Misty MacDuffee and Chris Genovali, writing in the *Toronto Star*, shred Oliver and Harper's empty promises. *The reality is that human nature and physical nature are the forces that produce tragedies at sea. This is an interesting report from Dale Drinnon’s Blog. We have not seen too many reports on small primates out there although they do exist. As this one, it is a case of actually encountering them in their operational range and that turns out to be a tall order. To start with they do not have to do much to hide, unlike a nine foot primate like Sasquatch. In addition this evidence tells us they operate in hunting bands and certainly avoid contact. Even here they are going after a great food supply and the amount likely to be harvested is so small as to make it beneath... more »

noreply@blogger.com (deBeauxOs) at DAMMIT JANET! - 1 day ago
From here: Are we really living in 2013? The Lego ads from the 1980s seem more modern to me. Now it's a gendered, bubblegum-pink sexist campaign geared to girly-girls - and most certainly NOT girly-boys! Indeed. My physician daughter, who in many ways (clothin choices, for one) resembled the child in the advertisement above, had her own Lego sets in the 1980s, as well as the full collection of the daring and exciting adventures of Yoko Tsuno, a female electrical engineer of Japanese ancestry. That's not the only reason she pursued a career in science; strong female rol... more »

Lollapalooza or Just Legacy Tour? People Are Finally Catching On To Who The Neolibs Actually Are (And What They Intend To Do To the Rest of US)

Outside my door. Karen Garcia at Sardonicky has an erudite, insightful essay on what she has designated as Obama's Lollapalooza Legacy (about which many of us (his past and current supporters) are starting to see much more clearly and are deeply worried about our leadership for the long term). Read it and see whether you agree with me about her perspicacity. At the end of her essay is a

End Of An Era: My Dear Friend, Whitewraithe, Is Ending Her Fabulous Work At Pragmatic Witness

I have been in many long discussions over the last few months with my closest ally and a real true friend in this fight against the evils of this world, Whitewraithe, who writes Pragmatic Witness at www.pragmaticwitness.com. Sadly, I must inform everyone that she has decided to quit posting articles at Pragmatic Witness, and she will instead concentrate on getting her personal life back in order, and then possibly start a new blog under a different format, possibly focusing on entertainment..... It was a very tough decision, and she asked me many times if it would be the correct ... more »

DOWN TO THE DOCTOR’S: ‘Daily Telegraph’ openly promoting Libz Party policy

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
*[image: _McGrath001]This week, **Libertarianz** leader Dr Richard McGrath is coming back a week early just to boast.* See, I promised I'd be back within a week! Why so soon? Because, as per the headline, a leading British newspaper has taken on board a Libertarianz policy--that the poor shouldn't be paying any tax—and we're proud of the *Telegraph* for doing so. Oddly, it seems the only Britons against the idea of tax cuts for the poor are ... yes, you guessed it: *The Guardian* and their left-wing readers. For pity's sake. Who would have thought it? The champagne socialist le... more »

What's in a name

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 1 day ago
Biggest buzz on my interwebs today was about the super colossal revision of acceptable Big Media syntax. The AP Stylebook banished "illegal immigrant"from its lexicon. Meanwhile, the world breathlessly awaits to see if the NYT will follow suit. No. Seriously. Everybody is talking about it. I expect we'll have days of deep analysis on why it's good, bad or doesn't matter at all. Haven't read a word beyond the headlines myself. All I have to say is, it's about damn time. Most of civil society stopped using it years ago. It's the contemporary version of wetback, mostly used to deperson... more »

Bulletin from civil-war-torn Damascus: Syria leads the way signing on to the BTAP

KenInNY at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
*Who would have thought Syria would lead the world on BTAP?* *by Ken* I know that last night I promised a "for instance" of the abuse of basic rights of an LGBT citizen so outrageous that, as I wrote, it "had me punching the walls." You may recall that AZ GOP Rep. Matt Salmon, whose gay son Matt's "It Gets Better" video we looked at last night, doesn't believe that LGBT rights are a "legal issue," and so -- as much as he professes to love his son -- apparently doesn't believe that young Matt is entitled to any of these rights so absolutely fundamental that most straight people nev... more »

Bigger pipelines breed bigger disasters

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 1 day ago
The tar sands oil spill cleanup in Arkansas is ongoing, not that you're going to see it happen. There's apparently a media blackout in place so the only video is being surreptitiously captured by locals. But here's something new. It's quite possible taxpayers would end up paying for a major tar sands oil spill, say if the KXL pipeline was built and subsequently ruptured. And this is why: Companies that transport oil are required to pay into the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, giving the government a pot of money for immediate spill responses. The Enbridge pipeline in Michigan and t... more »
