Hundreds of Birds Washed-Up On South Coast
Hundreds of birds have been washed-up along the south coast, covered in an
unidentified "creamy waxy substance".
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) said the guillemots, a
kind of auk, were discovered on Lyme Bay near Weymouth.
They have been taken to West Hatch Animal Centre in Taunton but attempts to
clean them have been hampered by not knowing what the substance is, Grahame
Madge, of the RSPB, said.

Kitty Genovese and continuing silence!

On its face, Kaufman discusses the brutal, once-famous murder of Kitty

at its heart, this fascinating news report is about something quite
different.
The Genovese murder became nationally famous because of what it supposedly

Each day, *Google* serves me a banquet of the latest news stories from

Why People Charged With Crimes Deserve Bail
* Huffington Post*
A dreadful murder in Toronto where the suspect was on bail has, once again,
led to media outrage. Calls to restrict or even prohibit bail have been
made. Even the Justice of the Peace who heard the bail hearing has been
pilloried for implementing a publication ban required by the Criminal Code

What is striking about the media outrage is how ill-informed the response
seems to be about bail itself.
There is a Constitutional right to reasonable bail not to be refused

New from CREDO: Charter Schools are No Better than Public Schools, and Don't Expect Them to Change

In perennially NON-breaking news, Canadians feel much the same about
abortion as they have for years.
Which is basically: All's swell. Now can we please all STFU about it?
Only 23% of us know there are no legal restrictions on abortion at any

Severance is based on prejudice
R. v. Robins, 2013 ONCA 65 is a recent source for the principle that
severance of charges ought to be based on any prejudice arising from trying

[2] The appellant submits that the trial judge erred in failing to
sever the weapons offences from the child pornography offences. Whether to
grant severance is a discretionary decision. The trial judge made no error
in principle and her decision is not unreasonable. There was little, if
any, prejudice from the joint trial. There was no suggestion that the

Russia 'Concerned' By Israeli Air Strike on Syria
Russia has said it is 'deeply concerned' over reports that Israeli jets
attacked a scientific research centre inside Syria.
The country has held back from condemning the action as yet, but says it
will do so if the report is true.
Syria announced on Wednesday that an Israeli air strike attacked the
research centre after reports had emerged out of Israel earlier claiming a
convoy had been attacked on the Syria-Lebanon border.

*It’s flu season, and even if you don’t fall ill like Piers Morgan after **publicly
receiving a flu shot from Dr. Oz**, you still run the risk of getting sick.
Particularly in the colder months, when we are sitting inside more often,
our houses are closed up, and we stay in close quarters—it’s the perfect
time for illness to thrive. But, when you take precautions to keep your

Simple Teriyaki Sauce
*Simple Teriyaki Sauce*
One of my favorite dishes is Teriyaki glazed baked salmon served with
steamed broccoli and rice. I find it a comforting and indulgent meal that
is super simple and nutritious. When trying to avoid gluten and sugar

Britons who store their data on cloud-based servers in America could have
all their files rooted through in secret by the U.S. government, it emerged
today.
Campaigners say a renewed piece of American legislation will allow federal
agencies to spy on foreign nationals without warning.
The U.S. government granted itself the right to snoop after its secret
rubber-stamping of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

'Holocaust was a myth invented by U.S': Aide to Egyptian President Morsi triggers outrage with claim six million 'dead' Jews had simply moved to America
A senior figure close to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi provoked outrage
today after claiming the Holocaust was a myth invented by the United States.
Fathi Shibab-Eddim, who is responsible for appointing editors of all the
state-run newspapers, claimed the six million Jews killed by Hitler had
actually been moved to America.
His comments came as the world marked Holocaust Remembrance day on Sunday
and little more than a week after it emerged that President Morsi himself
had once described Jews as 'descendants of apes and pigs'.

Alien planet hunters redefine the 'habitable zone' where life can exist - and find Earth is right on the edge
In astronomical terms, it is known as the 'habitable zone, or the
'goldilocks zone', where condition are not too far, and not too close -
just right for life to exist.
Now researchers have redefined the boundaries using new, more accurate
calculations - and found that Earth is right on the edge of the habitable
zone.
The team say their research will have major implications for planet hunters
looking for alien life.

Why higher benefits won't solve child poverty: Iain Duncan Smith says addict parents will 'waste cash on drink and drugs'
Giving more benefits to poor families will not address child poverty
because too many irresponsible parents will spend it on alcohol or

Iain Duncan Smith has warned.
The Work and Pensions Secretary said parental addiction – not family

He insisted that the last government’s strategy of spending more than

Israel to boycott UN human rights review
Israel said it was boycotting a UN meeting due to review its human rights
record, in a move advocacy groups warned would undermine the watchdog’s
authority and set a negative precedent for other countries.
A foreign ministry official confirmed that Israel, which accuses the UN of
anti-Israel bias and stopped co-operating with its human rights
organisations last year, would not be attending a universal periodic review
of its human rights record, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in Geneva.

Germans tolerated Hitler's rise - Merkel
Chancellor Angela Merkel has reminded Germans that Nazi crimes were
possible only because ordinary people allowed them take place.
Exactly 80 years after Adolf Hitler rose to power, Dr Merkel opened a new
exhibition yesterday addressing the Nazi take-over and the regime’s
subsequent persecution of Jews, homosexuals, Sinti-Roma and political
rivals.
“The rise of National Socialism was possible because the elites and parts
of German society participated but, above all, because most in Germany
tolerated this rise,” said Dr Merkel.

'Millions of low-income households' face council tax rise
Millions of the poorest households face council tax rises because most
councils in England will pass on a 10% cut in funding from April, research
suggests.
A typical bill will rise between £100 and £250 a year, but some could rise
as much as £600, according to think tank the Resolution Foundation.
Its report coincides with the deadline for local authorities to submit
their plans for changing council tax benefit.

John Friend, a young foolish man, with Zan Overall, truly a Wise Old Man.
I've been meaning to take a trip up to Los Angeles to visit my good friend,

drove around Hollywood, enjoyed a nice dinner, and attended an open mic
night at a local Hollywood club. Zan sang a wonderful song he wrote, which

The New York Times said the attacks coincided with its report last October

Iran crude oil exports rise to highest since EU sanctions
Iran's crude oil exports in December leapt to their highest level since
European Union sanctions took effect last July, analysts and shipping

Paul Krugman Denies Having Concurred With an Administration Forecast: A Note
by David O. Cushman
Abstract
In a previous article for Econ Journal Watch, I attributed to Paul Krugman
a concurrence with the optimistic economic forecast put forward in early
2009 by the incoming Administration. Krugman reacted by denying that he had
concurred with that forecast, pointing to a blog entry of his from January

“Anxiety! Why We're Anxious and the Secret to Getting Better”
*“Anxiety!*
* Why We're Anxious and the Secret to Getting Better”*
By Reid Wilson
“Anxiety and its next of kin, fear, are arguably the oldest, most basic
human emotions, bequeathed to us by a vast history of prehominid ancestors.
We owe our survival as Homo sapiens to these emotions, which were literally
built into our nervous systems as an evolutionary hedge against extinction.
Yet today, while still protecting us from genuine danger, they’ve morphed
into a multitude of extraneous and dysfunctional afflictions—panic
disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, and all... more »
To tell the truth
This slipped under the radar. WaPo is launching a new fact check featurefor it's website -- Truthteller.
The concept is well-intentioned. Watch the vid at the link, it's short but
you can't, it basically does fact checks in real time. They have some kind
of algorithm that flags phrases and matches them to their archived previous
fact checks.
The obvious problem is the WaPo doesn't have that stellar on record on
doing fact checks. Lots of dubious "both sides do it" has been passed on by
their human "truth tellers" for "balance." And of course, the other big
problem is there's stil... more »

A Case For Natural Disaster Vengeance?
Republican Congressman Peter King was correct when he said New York and New
Jersey donors would be crazy to contribute campaign money to Republican
candidates. "Anyone from New York or New Jersey who contributes one penny
to the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee should have their head
examined," he raved to CNN. "It was absolutely disgraceful. People in my
party, they wonder why they're becoming a minority party... They're going
to have a hard time getting my vote, I can tell you that. Turning your back
on people who are starving and freezing is not a Republican value."

Well yes, it's the uncertainty
So not exactly spelling doom forever, but troubling to see GDP dropped 0.1
percent in the last quarter of 2012. Part of the reason is cyclical. Fiscal
years ends in the third quarter and the Pentagon has to give back whatever
they didn't spend. So they go a wild spending spree to protect their
funding. And of course they don't spend in the last quarter because they're
out of money.
But this time the swing was bigger than usual. I have no doubt this is why:
Another possibility, as Michael O’Hanlon of Brookings told me, is that the
Pentagon has been preparing for the sequester budge... more »

*"Winning Isn’t Everything: Competing with Yourself"*
by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM
"When we are satisfied with our life, we do not look for experiences of
winning and losing to define our self-worth. The urges that drive us to
compete with others tend to be straightforward. Years of both evolution and
societal influences have shaped us to pit ourselves against our peers. The
needs and desires that inspire us to compete with ourselves, however, are
entirely personal and thus far more complex. A need to outdo our earlier
efforts—to confirm that we have grown as individuals—can... more »

Why Consumers are Bummed Out
TUESDAY, JANUARY 29, 2013
Original Here
The Conference Board reported Tuesday that the preliminary January figure
for consumer confidence in the United States fell to its lowest level in
more than a year.
The last time consumers were this bummed out was October 2011, when there
was widespread talk of a double-dip recession.
But this time business news is buoyant. The stock market is bullish. The
housing market seems to have rebounded a bit. ... more »
Is Harper Begging for Trouble?
A nagging worry I've had about the plans to ramp up supertanker traffic
through Vancouver's inner harbour and Kitimat and the Douglas Channel is
their extraordinary vulnerability to sabotage or terrorism.
It wouldn't take much to block the Second Narrows or Lions Gate and it
probably wouldn't take much more to create havoc in the Douglas Channel,
Dixon Entrance or Hecate Strait in the north.
In those waters it could take a long time to clear a scuttled hulk. And
what happens if either of those routes is blocked for any extended period?
What happens to ordinary, west coast commerc... more »
Lindsey Graham’s exciting new murder charge!
*WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2013*
*It’s time to denounce this misconduct:* Hillary Clinton stands accused of
murder all over again!
Monday night, speaking with Greta van Susteren, Lindsey Graham took the
nation down a repulsive old road.
“I haven’t forgotten about Benghazi,” Senator Graham dimwittedly said.
“Hillary Clinton got away with murder, in my view.”
What makes this a repulsive *old* road? At Salon, Joan Walsh remembers:
WALSH (1/30/13): Now, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and assume
he’s using “got away with murder” figuratively, rather than saying Clinton

Catch of the Day
(Updated)
The Catch goes to Ed Kilgore, who notes the similarities between this
year's and last year's Republican obsessions. The key point, however, generalizes
beyond that:
When a significant group of politicians decide to make some event or issue
the center of media attention, they can often do so to a considerable
extent whether it makes sense or not. When an entire political party
becomes committed to an event or issue as of transcendent importance, it
instantly becomes so regardless of the merits of the case.
That's right; we tend to assume that heavy news coverage is the res... more »

in order to afford humanity an integration period into these very new
energies. *Long ago, when the Anunnaki wished to rule over you, a special
agreement was put forth which stipulated that the period of dark rule would
only be allowed for around 13 millennia. This time has come and is well and
truly gone. The collapse of the many timelines into one was the final

Syria Claims Israeli Jets Hit Military Facility
An Israeli airstrike has hit a military research centre north west of
Damascus, the Syrian army has claimed.
In a statement carried by the state news agency, SANA, the Syrian army's
general command said: "Israeli fighter jets violated our air space at dawn
today and carried out a direct strike on a scientific research centre in
charge of raising our level of resistance and self-defence."

Available pleas
R. v. R.P., 2013 ONCA 53 deals with potential pleas available in Canada:
[38] Section 606(1) describes the pleas available to an accused who
is called upon to plead. The section makes it clear that, apart from the
general pleas of guilty and not guilty and the special pleas authorized by
Part XX, no other pleas are available. Thus, a formal plea of *nolo

our procedural law.

a waiver, not only of an accused's right to require ... more »
