making billions helping companies avoid UK tax.
In ‘shocking’ evidence to MPs, bosses told how they regularly advised
wealthy corporate clients to use offshore havens and legal loopholes to
minimise UK tax payments.
They admitted to having more than 200 offices in tax havens such as the

unit in the Natanz plant where Iran is enriching uranium to a fissile
concentration of up to five percent, according to an IAEA communication to
member states seen by Reuters.

Blogger's Note: As I cruise the (mostly liberal) internet news and opinion sites, I seem to be finding more and more unworkable solutions proposed to solve non-existant, unimportant, or insoluable-due-to-partisan-bickering problems. To get a grip on the REAL problems facing We the American People, I keep returning to the columns of (Republican) economist Paul Craig Roberts. Today's message is really scary, but it seems far better to know what's afoot than to bury our heads in the sand.

Snowmobiler Caleb Moore dies a week after crash
CNN is reporting sad news out of Aspen, Colo.
Snowmobiler Caleb Moore died Thursday, a week after a crash that has raised
new safety concerns about the X Games. He was 25 years old. ... Moore, a
freestyle snowmobiler, was attempting a backflip at the Winter X Games in
Aspen, Colorado, when he couldn't rotate his machine enough to land
properly. The skis dug into the lip of the slope, bringing the 450-pound
snowmobile crashing down on him. The vehicle slammed into Moore's head and
chest.

Migrants are sending £335BILLION to their struggling families back home... more than three times the world's total aid budget
The amount of remittance money topped £335billion last year as more people
than ever choose to live abroad, according to figures from the World Bank.
It has sparked debate whether this so-called remittance money could be a
viable alternative to relying on help from other governments. Britain's
shadow minister for international development, Rushanara Ali, who was born
in Bangladesh, believes the UK government should try to harness migrant
money to complement aid spending.

King has tonight admitted that it has been selling burgers and
Whoppers containing horsemeat despite two weeks of denials.
The fast food chain, which has more than 500 UK outlets, had earlier
given
a series of ‘absolute assurances’ that its products were not involved.
However, new tests have revealed these guarantees were incorrect in a
revelation that threatens to destroy the trust of customers.

the battlefield forever, failed miserably, or fell somewhere in between.

Just two years into a revolution that ignited during the Arab Spring,

On Wednesday, analysts described that statement as overreaching, but none

Spanish prime minister Rajoy accused of hiding secret income
Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy's government was rocked by a major
corruption scandal on Thursday after the publication of documents that
allegedly showed him receiving €250,000 that had been hidden from tax

Rajoy denied the allegations after El País published extracts from what it
said were secret accounts for his People's party (PP). But opponents called
for his resignation and ordinary Spaniards asked whether those now imposing
spending cuts and tax rises in the middle of a painful recession had
previously indulged in, or tolerated, systematic tax avoidance.

Extension of time to perfect an appeal
Mortazavi v. University of Toronto, 2013 ONCA 66 deals, in part, with
extending the time to perfect an appeal. The Court holds:
[21] The overriding principle the court must consider in deciding
whether to grant a party an extension of time to perfect an appeal is
whether the justice of the case requires it. In applying this principle,
the court typically takes into account the following four factors:

New from CREDO: Charter Schools are No Better than Public Schools, and Don't Expect Them to Change
*A slightly different version of this post appears at Common Dreams.*
*
*A new analysis of charter schools in the U. S. is out from CREDO, the
Stanford-based outfit that found in 2009, when there were 4,700 charters
across 40 states, that 17 percent of the nation’s charter schools were
scoring better on standardized tests than the public schools they were
created to replace:
While the report recognized a robust national demand for more charter
schools from parents and local communities, it found that 17 percent of
charter schools reported academic gains that were significantly better... more »

In perennially NON-breaking news, Canadians feel much the same about
abortion as they have for years.
Which is basically: All's swell. Now can we please all STFU about it?
Only 23% of us know there are no legal restrictions on abortion at any
time. That's actually an improvement. In 2010, just 21% of Canadians knew
there are no restrictions.
And, still and forever, a tiny number of nutbars want to ban abortion
altogether, nationally just 5%. But the regions are interesting. Atlantic
Canada comes in as least banny at 1%, followed by Quebec at 2%, BC at 3%,
and Saskitoba at 4%. Alb... more »
What to make of David Suzuki?
I don’t like David Suzuki. That’s been the case for many years now, ever
since I showed up at a book-signing in Victoria to interview him and
discovered that the man I had thought of as a kind, wise environmentalist
was in fact an obnoxious, rude guy who made no attempt to hide his contempt
of the fans gazing at him all fawn-eyed and adoring.
I’ve generally kept my opinion of him to myself, however, for fear of
seeming un-Canadian. I don’t know what the process is for becoming a
beloved Canadian icon, but have long recognized that once someone achieves
that status, any Canadian who... more »

Severance is based on prejudice
R. v. Robins, 2013 ONCA 65 is a recent source for the principle that
severance of charges ought to be based on any prejudice arising from trying
matters together:
[2] The appellant submits that the trial judge erred in failing to
sever the weapons offences from the child pornography offences. Whether to
grant severance is a discretionary decision. The trial judge made no error
in principle and her decision is not unreasonable. There was little, if
any, prejudice from the joint trial. There was no suggestion that the
appellant used the weapon or that it had anything to do ... more »

At last week’s inauguration, Blanco imagined us as “one people.” He
pictured us as “one country—all of us,” pursuing the future “together.”
Could such a vision be coming to pass? In this post, Kevin Drum asks if the
fever is breaking within the modern Republican Party. If it is, we may be
approaching the day when “all of us” can perhaps work together again.
That said, tribal forces stand in the way of any such resolution. Tribal

It may not completely satisfy.

China's Filthy Air Prompts Mask Rush and Sale of Fresh Air in Cans
For the fourth time this year, a murky haze has descended over north China,
