CO-06 Shaping Up As A Pivotal Congressional Race For 2014-- Primary Could Pit Ex-Speaker Andrew Romanoff Against Senate Majority Leader Morgan Carroll

Rep. Su Ryden, Sen. Morgan Carroll, Rep. Rhonda Fields Memorial Day Ceremony in Aurora Campaign strategists in both political parties agree that-- all things being equal-- the most endangered incumbents are the ones who win reelection with less than 50% of the vote, despite all the advantages of incumbency. Warning high street store closures will double

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 8 minutes ago
EXPERTS have warned there could soon be as many as 40,000 empty shops on Scotland's high streets as the collapse of major chains and retailers shows no sign of ending. The decline of top brands continued with DVD rental store Blockbuster following HMV into administration, with the potential loss of 4190 jobs – 300 of them in Scotland. Last week camera chain Jessops closed its stores. Now some retail analysts say the number of empty shops could double as chains and independent stores go out of business without fresh ventures to replace them. http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/home-n... more »

Europe, Japan and India on Thursday joined the United States in grounding Boeing Co's 787, a day after a second incident involving battery failure caused one of the Dreamliner passenger jets to make an emergency landing. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Wednesday it would temporarily ground Boeing's newest commercial airliner and insisted airlines would have to demonstrate the lithium ion batteries were safe before they could resume flying. It gave no details on when that might happen. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/17/us-boeing-dreamliner-idUSBRE90F1N8... more »

In southern India, relatives sometimes quietly kill their elders

Michael headed for work at a textile mill, leaving his wife, children and infirm mother at home in this impoverished part of southern India. When he returned a few hours later, his mother's body was propped up in a chair surrounded by villagers and decorated with flowers, poisoned by his wife with a potion in a local form of mercy killing known as thalaikoothal. Three decades later, he harbors no ill will toward his wife. Q Day 5: Presidential Persuasion

Bill Harshaw asks: Okay, you aren't on board with shmoozing as being important for a President, how about good ole Texas style arm-twisting a la LBJ? Or has that gone out the window with the pork barrel? Presidents should attempt to use whatever they can to persuade, whether their targets are interest groups, Members of Congress, bureaucrats, leaders of foreign nations, party leaders, whoever. We are going to have to accept substantially higher costs for liquid-carbon fuel. There are some uses, such as aviation, that just don't suit alternative energy options, at least not those available today. Why should petroleum-based fuels cost two, three, four times what they do today? Two reasons: we need to price fossil carbon realistically to reflect the true environmental costs it imposes and we need to use that revenue to support non-fossil fuels. There are new technologies that enable us to use surface carbon assets instead of fossil carbon to produce the gasoline and oil ... more »

A Fifteen Year Reign?

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 15 hours ago
Yesterday, Lawrence Martin floated a depressing thought: We may have to live with Stephen Harper for a long, long time: With still plenty of time in his current term, Mr. Harper will join the group of long-time tenants and it’s even possible he will one day make the 15-year club. Opposition party members will quietly tell you that without amalgamation or a co-operation deal of some kind among progressive parties, the chances of unseating the Conservatives are small. Reducing them to a minority is well possible, they feel, but not throwing them out. Harper, most certainly, has bee... more »

BP Gas Site Hit By 'Kidnap Terror': possible Revenge motive for French military action in Mali

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 15 hours ago
At least eight foreigners, including an Irishman, have been kidnapped from a gas facility part-operated by BP in Algeria. The Foreign Office confirmed a "terrorist" incident was ongoing soon after BP said it had reported a "security incident" to the UK authorities. But the company was yet to confirm a link to reports that Islamist militants, said to be connected to al Qaeda, had seized a number of people in an attack that had a possible revenge motive for French military action in Mali. http://news.sky.com/story/1038832/bp-gas-site-hit-by-kidnap-terror

There is some sense in which I personally like Karl Schwarzenberg, the 75-year-old prince who will become Václav Klaus' successor as the Czech president if he beats Miloš Zeman next Saturday. I think that he's been doing good things throughout much of his life, he isn't really obsessed with harming or restricting other people, I have no problems with his links to the late ex-president Havel that he managed to build, I like some of the residual aristocratic manners he still displays, and I acknowledge that he has inherited some good things (in my opinion) from the Czech character. Ellen is right on this. In fact it is always better to localize governmental functionality and decision making as much as possible and disaster management in particular. Central power deludes itself into thinking that only one person is able to make decisions and naturally dis-empowers everyone else with bureaucratic arteriosclerosis. We are not there yet but the competition is clearly heating up as the majors pile on. The first obvious stage is to have an effective system that the driver simply monitors in a hands off position. This may be possible largely even now. Such a transitional will then be natural and quick as confidence also rises. The majority of driving is repetitive and just removing that particular load will popularize its acceptance. From that point, it should take less than a decade to see it all go driver-less to everyone's safety and ease. From then on mankind will be simply cat... more »

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 21 hours ago
A frustratingly slow economic recovery in developed nations is holding back the global economy, the World Bank said on Tuesday, as it sharply cut its outlook for world growth in 2013. The World Bank forecast that global gross domestic product will inch up 2.4 percent this year, from 2.3 percent in 2012. In its last forecast in June, the bank projected global growth would reach 3.0 percent in 2013. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/16/us-worldbank-global-idUSBRE90E17G20130116

New Colours Added to Weather Chart to Display Australia's Heat Wave

Image courtesy: Australia's Bureau of Meteorology/Public Domain It's official, 2012 was a record year for heat in the US, and 2013 is already turning out to be historic for Australia, a country that is used to extreme heat, but nothing quite like what they're getting now. A "dome of heat" has settled over the country and caused record-breaking temperatures; so much so that the Australian Bureau of Meteorology actually had to add a new color to its weather maps to show the hottest parts of the country (it's purple, as you can see above). This extends the range up to 54 degrees celsi... more »

That's exactly what has been happening with hay in drought and wildfire-afflicted areas of the United States. In fact, many aren't ready to fork out the extra cash, or they simply can't locate a seller, because there's been a big resurgence of hay bale thefts. "Sheriffs in rural counties in Colorado, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Kansas say the spike in hay thefts is part of a broader rise in agricultural c... more »
