CO-06 Shaping Up As A Pivotal Congressional Race For 2014-- Primary Could Pit Ex-Speaker Andrew Romanoff Against Senate Majority Leader Morgan Carroll
Rep. Su Ryden, Sen. Morgan Carroll, Rep. Rhonda Fields
Memorial Day Ceremony in Aurora
Campaign strategists in both political parties agree that-- all things
being equal-- the most endangered incumbents are the ones who win
reelection with less than 50% of the vote, despite all the advantages of
incumbency. It's usually just a matter of the right opponent coming along
before they're history. Every congressional incumbent in Colorado was
reelected in November, despite President Obama's 51-46% win over Romney in
the closely fought swing state. Obama took 26 counties-- including all the ... more »
Warning high street store closures will double
EXPERTS have warned there could soon be as many as 40,000 empty shops on
Scotland's high streets as the collapse of major chains and retailers shows
no sign of ending.
The decline of top brands continued with DVD rental store Blockbuster
following HMV into administration, with the potential loss of 4190 jobs –
300 of them in Scotland. Last week camera chain Jessops closed its stores.
Now some retail analysts say the number of empty shops could double as
chains and independent stores go out of business without fresh ventures to
replace them.

France, Germany and Italy: Terrorists in Mali must go
Europe's largest powers appeared Wednesday to be united in their goal of
removing al Qaeda-linked militants from the West African nation of Mali,
where Islamist rebels are fighting to overthrow Mali's government.
A quarter-million people have fled Mali -- twice the number who have fled
fighting in Syria -- and stirred international fears that Mali will become
Africa's next haven for terrorists.

U.S., others ground Boeing Dreamliner indefinitely
Europe, Japan and India on Thursday joined the United States in grounding
Boeing Co's 787, a day after a second incident involving battery failure
caused one of the Dreamliner passenger jets to make an emergency landing.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Wednesday it would
temporarily ground Boeing's newest commercial airliner and insisted
airlines would have to demonstrate the lithium ion batteries were safe
before they could resume flying. It gave no details on when that might
happen.

In southern India, relatives sometimes quietly kill their elders
Michael headed for work at a textile mill, leaving his wife, children and
infirm mother at home in this impoverished part of southern India. When he
returned a few hours later, his mother's body was propped up in a chair
surrounded by villagers and decorated with flowers, poisoned by his wife
with a potion in a local form of mercy killing known as thalaikoothal.
Three decades later, he harbors no ill will toward his wife. "My mother had

Q Day 5: Presidential Persuasion
Bill Harshaw asks:
Okay, you aren't on board with shmoozing as being important for a
President, how about good ole Texas style arm-twisting a la LBJ? Or has
that gone out the window with the pork barrel?
Presidents should attempt to use whatever they can to persuade, whether
their targets are interest groups, Members of Congress, bureaucrats,
leaders of foreign nations, party leaders, whoever.
What Neustadt says, more or less, is that substance mostly trumps style.
Presidents usually don't persuade by badgering, bullying, sweet-talking, or

One of Russia's top crime bosses has been murdered in Moscow in a war

Three car bombs exploded within minutes of each other in northwest Syria on
Wednesday, killing at least two dozen people in a coordinated assault on
government positions, a monitoring group said.
Fighting has spread throughout much of Syria and upended civilian life in
many areas as rebels have pushed to uproot President Bashar al-Assad's
better-equipped forces and tip the balance of the 22-month-old conflict.

Obama's possible election dig against Netanyahu could backfire
President Obama's possible attempt to pay back Israeli Prime Minister Bibi
Netanyahu for praising his rival during the last election could be

Obama, who was reportedly peeved by Netanyahu’s perceived endorsement of

Senior City allies of George Osborne will tomorrow dramatically back David

The president said he would announce 23 executive actions today, but said
they are not a substitute for action in Congress. He said he is calling on
federal lawmakers to pass several proposals "right away", including

Right now, some 40% of US gun purchases are done without background checks.
As part of his $500m (£311m) plan, Mr Obama also called on Congress to
restore the expired ban on military-style assault weapons and to enact a

It's Hard to See Any Other Way Forward
We are going to have to accept substantially higher costs for liquid-carbon
fuel. There are some uses, such as aviation, that just don't suit
alternative energy options, at least not those available today.
Why should petroleum-based fuels cost two, three, four times what they do
today? Two reasons: we need to price fossil carbon realistically to
reflect the true environmental costs it imposes and we need to use that
revenue to support non-fossil fuels.
There are new technologies that enable us to use surface carbon assets
instead of fossil carbon to produce the gasoline and oil ... more »

Apparently not. Apparently slavery was very much alive and well in the

European car market plunges to lowest since 1995
Demand for new cars in recession-bound Europe fell to a 17-year low in
2012, leaving mass market manufacturers little hope for this year as they

their margins.
Registrations data released on Wednesday also showed the biggest annual
drop since a 16.9 percent downturn in 1993, highlighting the crisis for
automakers in Europe. Consumers are fretting over austerity measures, job
security and rising living costs, and those who want to buy new cars are

The "IF" That Divides Us
We watch in children with pathetic interest, the degree in which they

There is some sense in which I personally like Karl Schwarzenberg, the

I think that he's been doing good things throughout much of his life, he
isn't really obsessed with harming or restricting other people, I have no
problems with his links to the late ex-president Havel that he managed to
build, I like some of the residual aristocratic manners he still displays,

A powerful southern offensive by Islamists in Mali last week, halted only
by French air strikes, showed that a loose alliance of rebels from al

When the coalition of Islamists swept across northern Mali last year,
massacring army troops and carving up the vast desert zone, ties between Al

releasing a shooting video game aimed at children as young as four.

The Poet: Wendell Berry, "A Warning To My Readers"
*"A Warning To My Readers"*
by Wendell Berry
"Do not think me gentle
because I speak in praise
of gentleness, or elegant
because I honor the grace
that keeps this world. I am
a man crude as any,
gross of speech, intolerant,
stubborn, angry, full
of fits and furies. That I
may have spoken well
at times, is not natural.
A wonder is what it is."

New Colours Added to Weather Chart to Display Australia's Heat Wave
Image courtesy: Australia's Bureau of Meteorology/Public Domain
It's official, 2012 was a record year for heat in the US, and 2013 is
already turning out to be historic for Australia, a country that is used to
extreme heat, but nothing quite like what they're getting now. A "dome of
heat" has settled over the country and caused record-breaking temperatures;
so much so that the Australian Bureau of Meteorology actually had to add a
new color to its weather maps to show the hottest parts of the country
(it's purple, as you can see above). This extends the range up to 54
degrees celsi... more »

Drought Gives Rise to New Crime
The round hay bales used on larger farms. Photo courtesy: Flickr/CC BY 2.0
Economics 101 says that, all else being equal, when the supply of something
goes down, the price should go up. That's exactly what has been happening
with hay in drought and wildfire-afflicted areas of the United States. In
fact, many aren't ready to fork out the extra cash, or they simply can't
locate a seller, because there's been a big resurgence of hay bale thefts.
"Sheriffs in rural counties in Colorado, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Kansas say
the spike in hay thefts is part of a broader rise in agricultural c... more »
Citizens File Articles of Impeachment Against Obama
When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same
Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is

new Guards for their future security.”
Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.

A Tale Of Two House Republicans-- Justin Amash And Lynn Westmoreland... And The Asshole Factor
Boehner has something in his eye-- Justin Amash
With Ron Paul no longer in Congress, libertarian Justin Amash (R-MI) now
has a voting record second only to New Yorker Chris Gibson as the most
consistently at odds with the House Republican leadership of anyone in the
GOP caucus. Presumably that's why Boehner, Cantor and Ryan kicked him off
the Budget Committee-- rather than the stated reason. (Boehner lapdog Lynn
Westmoreland, always in a fierce contest with Gohmert for the title of
"Dumbest Member of Congress," has told anyone who would listen that Amash

The philosophy club is currently studying Philosophy of Mind, a topic
fraught with ambiguity. People use terms such as “mind,”
“consciousness,” “awareness,” “experience,” and so forth as

ALEC - You Do NOT Find This - at an NCSL Meeting
I just forced myself to listen to a 10 minute presentation on a radio
program sponsored by the extremist right-wing free-market radio station
from the John Locke Foundation in North Carolina.
They were talking about ALEC. In fact they were whining about how the
American Legislative Exchange Council is being picked on by the left
-whining, whining, whining. They spent ten minutes trying to get the
listener to believe that ALEC is just like NCSL. I get so sick of that
argument.
