"Common courtesy is a small gesture that makes a big difference and should

I have two pieces out on the compromise package on Senate reform -- at PP I
say that the package does nothing about the 60 vote Senate, but should help
a lot with the problem of filibusters when there *is* a 60 vote

And at Greg's place, I discussed the factors that led to more major reform

recognize those in other people. It's more that the idea of same-sex
attraction was completely outside of my realm of thinking. So if someone
was stereotypically gay or sent off some other signals of his or her
homosexuality, I never gave such clues any thought at all. I
more-less sized up other males as friendly or unfriendly and females my age

When it comes to literacy training, low-income kids are disadvantaged in
many ways. At one point, Kristof tells a poignant story about someone he

Evil Dead remake - redband trailer - adult horrorschlockery of the gloriousest order
there's so little cinematic product these day that harks back to the sheer
gut-cringing tooth-grinding horror of my favourite film of the 1980's, so
here's the leering trailer for the remake of Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD -- we're

Reagan/Obama
I have a column up over at TAP arguing that it's a mistake for Barack Obama
to aspire to being a "liberal Reagan" -- because, well, because politics
doesn't work like that. And with some advise on what Obama should do going
forward. I think it's a good one, so maybe you will too.
Meanwhile, since I wrote it the "liberal Reagan" pieces keep on coming --
two smart observers, E.J. Dionne and Greg Sargent, each pick up the theme.
I'll note a couple of things that go a bit beyond the TAP piece in response.
Dionne says that "Like Reagan, Obama hopes to usher in a long-term

This Burns Me Up
As in Robbie Burns. I just read that the haggis has been banned in the
United States since 1971, all thanks to FDA squeamishness about the
inclusion of sheep lung in the authentic recipe.
Haggis, of course, is a concoction of sheep's liver, heart and lung
(commonly called "pluck") mixed with oatmeal, onion, suet and spices,
soaked in stock and then stuffed into a sheep's stomach and boiled. Don't
turn your nose up at it until you've savored it yourself. It's truly
delicious.

during a CBC radio interview... more »

The Precautionary Principle
In Harper's Canada we consider it bad form to discuss things such as the
"precautionary principle." It's treated as an unwarranted impediment to
government, especially Harper's deviant view of economic progress.
Fortunately for Harper, the Liberals and New Democrats largely play along.
What is the precautionary principle? It's not new and has been stated and
restated in slightly different ways but the *Wiki* summary of it will
suffice for this discussion.

Israel Reviews Military After West Bank Deaths

Tear gas and plastic-coated steel bullets were fired at the angry crowd and

Antibiotic resistance is now as serious a threat as terrorism and could trigger an 'apocalyptic scenario', warns UK's top doctor
Growing numbers of drug-resistant diseases could trigger an ‘apocalyptic
scenario’ comparable to a catastrophic terrorist attack, Britain’s chief
medical officer warned yesterday.
Dame Sally Davies said there was risk that within 20 years people going for
simple operations would die of routine infections because we may ‘run out
of antibiotics’ that work.
She told MPs the threat from infections that are resistant to antibiotics
was so serious that the issue should be added to the Government’s national
risk register of civil emergencies.

Circumstantial evidence
*R. v. Carpio*, 2012 BCCA 484 is a useful source for the view that where
there is a lot of smoke one can conclude there is a fire:
[25] As was said in *R. v. Jenkins* (1908) 14 C.C.C. 221 (B.C.C.A.)

It is true that a man is not called upon to explain suspicious things, but
there comes a time when, circumstantial evidence having enveloped a man in
a strong and cogent network of inculpatory facts, that man is bound to make
some explanation or stand condemned.

Irish-led EU military to stay in Somalia
An EU military training mission in Somalia, under Irish command, is to
remain in place for another two years. The Council of the European Union
said the mission would continue to contribute to the strengthening of the
Somali armed forces to prepare them to ultimately take over security
responsibilities there.
The mission is currently based at Bihanga in neighbouringUganda but,
depending on security considerations, is due to move into the Somalian
capital Mogadishu in the coming weeks.

US is main source of EU credit card fraud - Europol
Data breaches in the US account for most of the credit card fraud affecting
the EU, a new police report says.
Criminal gangs are making about 1.5bn euros (£1.2bn; $2bn) annually from
such fraud, the EU police agency Europol says, regretting that compliance

CNN: Marc Morano on extreme weather trends
CNN and its Piers Morgan show just aired a very short exchange of opinions
Michael Brune vs Marc Morano (video)
between a defender of the climate alarm (an activist in the Sierra Club,

the technical background for that.
However, when it comes to his ability to localize the relevan... more »
EU police agency opens unit to tackle cybercrime
The European Union's police coordination agency opened a new cybercrime

But as the European Cybercrime Centre, or EC3, formally opened its doors at
Europol's Hague headquarters, European Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia
Malmstrom conceded it will be playing catch-up with organized crime gangs
reveling in a "Golden Age" of cybercrime.

Only 11 euro zone countries to impose planned financial trading tax
A financial trading tax (FTT) planned by a group of euro zone nations could
leave major banks, its main target, relatively unscathed while less nimble
smaller trading houses, pension funds and asset managers bear the brunt.
Germany, France and nine other countries are pushing ahead with the tax on
trades in stocks, bonds and derivatives, keen to show voters they can claw
back some of the taxpayers' money used to bail out banks during the
2007-2009 financial crisis. ID:nL6N0AR2K5]
However, bankers and finance industry experts are sceptical about a tax
that will not be imposed even ... more »
