BEIRUT: Syria’s Finance Ministry has frozen the assets of Former Prime
Minister Saad Hariri and Future Movement MP Oqab Saqr, Syrian media
reported this week.
Quoting a statement issued by the ministry, the media said the state "has
frozen liquid and non-liquid assets for Saadeddine Hariri, Lebanon's former
prime minister ... and Oqab Saqr."
The statement added that the ministry also undertook such measures against
the spokesperson of the Free Syrian Army Louay al-Meqdad.

EU states get blessing for financial trading tax

Germany, France and nine other euro zone countries got a go-ahead on
Tuesday to implement a tax on trading, despite the reservations of
financial centers such as London and Luxembourg that are worried it could
drive business out of Europe.
EU finance ministers gave their approval at a meeting in Brussels, allowing
11 states to pursue a financial transactions tax. The 11 are: Germany,
France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Portugal, Belgium, Estonia, Greece, Slovakia
and Slovenia.

Bus falls into river in Bolivia, killing at least 10

A passenger bus plummeted from a height of 300 meters into a river in the
Yungas region of Bolivia, killing at least ten people, with another 26
injured.
According to rescuers, many people could have been carried off by the
strong current, so that the final death toll may increase.
Already there is unconfirmed information of 18 victims of the tragedy. The
causes of the accident are not yet known; rescuers and investigators are on
site.

One person was killed and seven were injured Tuesday when an earthquake hit
the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, CNN reported, citing a government
agency.
The 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck 37 kilometers (23 miles) under Aceh
province, and a 4.7-magnitude aftershock followed 26 minutes later, the
U.S. Geological Survey said.
The casualties occurred in an area where several homes were damaged, said
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster
Management Agency.

plant early Monday morning, plant officials said.
Operators investigated a “minor leak associated with a pilot valve on one

which owns and operates the nuclear plant, said in a statement.
The plant is currently “in a safe, stable condition and there is no threat

there was still snow on the ground, and light enough to jog by, I put on my
jogging cap and gloves and took myself out into the countryside for a
lovely but brisk half hour jog.
Three miles, no more than that, but it was proper gorgeous, crump crump
crump underfoot and nobody out but me.

Algeria hostage crisis: Most weapons used in attack came from Libya

Many of the Islamist terrorists shot their way into the In Amenas compound
on Thursday using the AK104 model of Kalashnikov, which was typically used
by Libyan rebels in the war against Muammar Gaddafi.
They brought F5 rockets that also surfaced in the Libyan war, said the
security source.
The Islamists wore the same type of outfits that Qatar provided to Libyan
National Transitional Council rebels by Qatar – yellow flak jackets with
brown patches, known as "chocolate chip" camouflage. The garments are
copies of ones worn by Americans in the Gulf war.

Iran is set to unveil a new “space observatory” that will serve as the
centerpiece of its space program, and may launch “living creatures” into
orbit “in the coming days,” according to state-run media reports.
The new space base will act as headquarters from which the Iranian military
can monitor Tehran’s future “expeditionary space missions,” according to
Iran’s defense minister, who was quoted Monday in Iran’s Fars News Agency.
Tehran will also unveil sometime between the end of January and early
February “the latest home-made fighter jets,” Fars reported.

A postman collapsed and died on his round as he battled to free his Royal
Mail van after the vehicle became stuck in a deep snowdrift, it emerged
today.
John Bircham, of Dulverton, Somerset, suffered a heart attack as he fought

He became the 11th casualty of the nine-day winter freeze.

beryllium-10 in Antarctic ice.
The readings were traced back to a point in AD 774 or 775, suggesting that
during that period the Earth was hit by an intense burst of radiation, but
researchers were initially unable to determine its cause.
Now a separate team of astronomers have suggested it could have been due to
the collision of two compact stellar remnants such as black holes, neutron
stars or white dwarfs.

fuel, port officials said on Monday.
Attacks on shipping are increasing in the Gulf of Guinea - second only to
the waters around Somalia for piracy. But the ITRI incident was only the
second of its kind in Ivorian waters.
The tanker, named the ITRI and owned by Lagos-based Brila Energy, was
commandeered on Thursday, Abidjan's port authority said in a statement.

French troops take central Mali towns, rebels slip away

Douentza in central Mali on Monday after the al Qaeda-linked rebels who had
seized them melted into the bush to avoid air strikes.
France said the advance was a success in its campaign to oust Islamist

raising fears the area could become a launchpad for international attacks.

legal safe radiation limit for seafood, the plant's operator has revealed.
The company Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) caught the fish, dubbed 'Mike the
Murasai' online, in the bay close to the Fukukshima Daiichi main reactor.
It was confirmed by Tepco to have amounts of radioactive cesium equal to
254,000 becquerels per kilogram, or 2540 times the limit of 100
becquerels/kg set for seafood by the government.

in the Sahara has risen to almost 60, with at least nine Japanese nationals

Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal is expected to give details at a
Monday news conference about one of the worst international hostage crises

An heroic British holidaymaker has wrestled a 2m (6ft) shark off the
Australian coast to stop beachgoers being attacked.
Paul Marshallsea, 62, from Wales, was on a month's break with his family
when the shark swam right up to swimmers and children paddling on the shore
on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
A local TV crew, which was on the beach filming another story, captured the
moment when Mr Marshallsea and another man ran into the water and grabbed
the shark by its tail in an attempt to get it to swim away.

At some point, a flawed paradigm will start cranking out absurd results.
In this instance, our paradigm for measuring age in the universe is telling
us that a nearby star that is still in the hydrogen burn stage is older
than the universe. This is nonsense of course.
What it tells us is that our models for stellar evolution are incomplete
at least and our assumptions on age and distance are deeply flawed as we
have long since thought.

You do want to go to the original on this one in order to work through the
excellent pictures. Way more important however is that this clears up a
major problem that I have had with Bronze Age, or Atlantean mining
technology between about 2500 BC and 1159 BC.
The Bronze Age assumption we have all accepted has involved the use of an
open fire on the ore face to induce spalling to collect ore. It is a
really bad idea simply because there is a loss of control of airflow almost
immediately. Carbon monoxide makes it impossible and the heat delivery is

The sun is the one thing big enough and significant enough to affect
climate at all. That is a little detail assiduously ignored by most in the
climate game since it looks a lot like a constant. Yet minor variations in
spectrum and flux can plausibly trigger significant accelerators that do
impact wildly and enough to disturb our world.
We learn here that EUV goes crazy during a sunspot maximum and that the

Accepted Memory Formation Model Refuted

This is a neat bit of science that clearly shows us that the working
hypothesis simply does not work. Implied in all that is that repetition is
effects memory formation when that would be quite an inefficient protocol.
Why not infer instead that the mind makes a specific decision to retain a
memory point which can then be over ridden by further work? Do not infer
that this process is passive and automatic.
That certainly explains the plasticity of memory. In my own case I have
observed my own mind balking at actual memorization of any kind whenever I

Got News For You programme that was repeated last week. The BBC mislead us
on iPlayer that this programme was new:
But 10 seconds on Wikipedia shows that this episode was actually first
broadcast in April 2012
Regardless of the BBC misleading the public as to which programmes are
repeats and which are not, what do you think of the reaction from some of
the panel to Jo Brand's joke about children not having to be worried as
