Happy Birthday to John Hurt, 73. And some good stuff: 1. A few basic facts about the US in Afghanistan, from Paul Waldman. 2. Voteview on the ideological placement of US presidents. Worth looking at, but I'm far from convinced that what it's tapping into really measures something we're very interested in. 3. Arizona, (perhaps) making trouble again with the presidential nomination calendar. Josh Putnam has it, of course. 4. Sarah Binder looks ahead to the 113th. 5. Why the GOP Occupied Texas II

Len Hart at The Existentialist Cowboy - 1 hour ago
*by Len Hart, The Exisentialist Cowboy* Though Texas is now thought of as a 'red' state, it was not always so. From January 15, 1874 to January 16, 1979 every Texas governor was Democratic. Moreover, most of them could be described as 'progressive Democrats'. This topic has come up as Texas is now thought of as GOP occupied territory, i.e, a 'red' state. If this is, indeed, the case, the GOP had best be kind to Texas. A cursory survey of the red-blue map of the U.S. indicates that Texas is the only state among GOP/red states to have electoral votes in two digits. As a result, Texas... more »

Israel's Extremist Right Set For Cabinet Posts

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 4 hours ago
Israelis go to the polls today in an election that could have a devastating impact on hopes for a future peace deal with the Palestinians. While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is predicted to win the most seats, opinion polls have suggested support for his Likud Beitenu party has been steadily eroded by a surge in the popularity of smaller right wing parties. Analysts have observed that a weak performance by his party at the ballot box could leave Mr Netanyahu having to accept demands from more extremist groups in order to form a coalition government. http://news.sky.com/story/1... more »

spirit guide - dream guardian - show thyself

since my 47th birthday, I've decided to finally FORCE a meeting with my 'official' spirit guide or dream guardian. I opted for both because I can't work out which is more real: the unconscious world of dreaming or the conscious world of toil. Each night for the last week, I wrote in my little dream diary, "Tonight, I will meet my spirit guide," as a prompt and, of course, nothing happened. Let us try something else. Quasars are way closer to us than we have imagined and may actually be in our own galaxy. I have good reason to think this anyway as the present theory depends on the extreme red shifts exhibited for which present day astronomy accepts only one explanation. We do that and it is a simple star cluster that is much the same age and has entered the Quasar Stage close together. This obviously changes the whole picture and demands an independent explanation for the spectrum and the red shift. I can actually do this easily but will leave it for the time be... more »

Yet capability needs to be in place should such an event arise. Again it is distributed capability that can move on target when needed. I am sure there will be other tricky issues as well once the core technology is mastered. In that scenario, the view would merely change completely. It is likely also that actual movement will be in short hops to have line of sight of any close by objects and it may be more energy efficient. Capitalism Imbalance and Resolutions

What is destroying capitalism is its penchant for gaming monopolies and stifling competition and innovation. The expedient of setting the tax universe to powerfully over tax the cost of capital for the capital rich is likely able to end this abuse. Recall that large capital accesses cheaper money than a small dynamic growing business. It is no trick to establish the cost of capital and to then tax away the advantage. It is not particularly onerous, but assembling for the sake of assembling becomes unattractive and will only be driven then by specific business rationalizatio... more »

Russia is sending two planes to Lebanon to evacuate Russians from civil war-struck Syria, authorities said Monday, a move that appears to reflect Moscow’s increasing doubts about Syrian President Bashar Assad’s ability to stay in power. The Emergency Situations Ministry said two of its planes were scheduled to fly to Beirut on Tuesday to carry more than 100 Russians from Syria. Russia has been Assad’s main ally since the start of the conflict in the Arab state in March 2011, using its veto power at the United Nations Security Council to shield Damascus from international sanctions... more »

Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address

"Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces, but let us judge not, that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered. That of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes. "Woe unto the world because of offenses; for it must needs be that offenses come, but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh."" - *Lincoln*.

Obama invokes Founders, inaugurates new era of collectivism

If, like me, you woke up to the sound of Obama inaugurating himself into the pantheon of great American presidents by invoking the words of the Founding Fathers to bolster his own arguments for collectivism, then you too might have wondered how he thought he could pull off what, even in that early hour when the brain is still slightly foggy, sounded like a massive logical leap. Maybe it sounded that way too to the folk in the audience, since the applause for his phony rhetoric seemed pretty spartan. Black hole collision may have irradiated Earth in eighth century

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 18 hours ago
A study last year found unusually high levels of the isotope carbon-14 in ancient rings of Japanese cedar trees and a corresponding spike in beryllium-10 in Antarctic ice. The readings were traced back to a point in AD 774 or 775, suggesting that during that period the Earth was hit by an intense burst of radiation, but researchers were initially unable to determine its cause. Now a separate team of astronomers have suggested it could have been due to the collision of two compact stellar remnants such as black holes, neutron stars or white dwarfs. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienc... more »

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti launched his campaign for a second term on Sunday with a speech calling for deep-rooted reforms to kick start economic growth, four weeks ahead of a parliamentary election. 40 years old and already irrelevant: happy birthday roe v wade

Right now there are no American women who were of reproductive age prior to *Roe v. Wade*, the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion. Yet reproductive rights in the US have never been more threatened. 2011 marked the passage of the most state-level restrictive abortion laws ever. 2012 saw the second-highest. More than half of all US women of reproductive age (15–44) now live in a state that is hostile to abortion rights. Ten years ago, it was fewer than one-third. The Guttmacher Institute has produced a series of infographics to illustrate the state of reproductive right... more »

Today is Martin Luther King's birthday as well as the anniversary of the Great March on Washington. Today is also the beginning of Phase Two of the Age of Obama. And it ain't the flu. Because in this Age of Obama, progressivism has been pathologized into a form of wimpy pragmatism. When our daughter was a newborn, I can count on one hand the number of times she slept more than 2 hours at a time. We had such a hard time getting her into a sleep routine. She was almost nine months old when she finally started sleeping through the night. After we hit that milestone, she was an excellent sleeper, until she turned three. Over the last four years, Paul Krugman has been a harsh critic of the Obama administration -- not because it has failed to cut the deficit -- but because it has not made job creation its prime objective. However, as Obama starts his second term, Krugman praises Obama for his accomplishments: He hasn’t delivered everything his supporters wanted, and at times the survival of his achievements seemed very much in doubt. But if progressives look at where we are as the second term begins, they’ll find grounds for a lot of (qualified) satisfaction. Krugman writes that Obama has succeed... more »

I had to laugh about the NRCC's target list for 2014 for several reasons. But the one I got the biggest kick out of was how they put DCCC chair Steve Israel on it. This after he went out of his way-- to the point of embarrassing himself and jeopardizing grassroots support for his committee-- by holding fast to a policy of giving all senior Republican Party leaders free passes to reelection. Even vulnerable Republican leaders who could have been engaged and beaten-- from relatively easy targets like Paul Ryan (WI), Joe Pitts (PA), Ileana Ros Lehtinen (FL), Fred Upton (MI) and Buck ... more »

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 1 day ago
An heroic British holidaymaker has wrestled a 2m (6ft) shark off the Australian coast to stop beachgoers being attacked. Paul Marshallsea, 62, from Wales, was on a month's break with his family when the shark swam right up to swimmers and children paddling on the shore on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. A local TV crew, which was on the beach filming another story, captured the moment when Mr Marshallsea and another man ran into the water and grabbed the shark by its tail in an attempt to get it to swim away. http://news.sky.com/story/1040687/british-grandfather-wrestles-shark-in-oz

Oldest Star in Universe

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
At some point, a flawed paradigm will start cranking out absurd results. In this instance, our paradigm for measuring age in the universe is telling us that a nearby star that is still in the hydrogen burn stage is older than the universe. This is nonsense of course. What it tells us is that our models for stellar evolution are incomplete at least and our assumptions on age and distance are deeply flawed as we have long since thought. I think about the universe using two conjectures. It is steady state in appearance and relative velocity is negligible. The red shift va... more »

Atlantean Mining Technology Rediscovered and Modernized

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
You do want to go to the original on this one in order to work through the excellent pictures. Way more important however is that this clears up a major problem that I have had with Bronze Age, or Atlantean mining technology between about 2500 BC and 1159 BC. The Bronze Age assumption we have all accepted has involved the use of an open fire on the ore face to induce spalling to collect ore. It is a really bad idea simply because there is a loss of control of airflow almost immediately. Carbon monoxide makes it impossible and the heat delivery is terribly low. On to... more »

Solar Variability and Terrestrial Climate

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
The sun is the one thing big enough and significant enough to affect climate at all. That is a little detail assiduously ignored by most in the climate game since it looks a lot like a constant. Yet minor variations in spectrum and flux can plausibly trigger significant accelerators that do impact wildly and enough to disturb our world. We learn here that EUV goes crazy during a sunspot maximum and that the long term trend is negative. Thus we are leaning toward a direct link between solar activity or lack there off to the sudden cooling that has been experienced in the... more »

Accepted Memory Formation Model Refuted

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
This is a neat bit of science that clearly shows us that the working hypothesis simply does not work. Implied in all that is that repetition is effects memory formation when that would be quite an inefficient protocol. Why not infer instead that the mind makes a specific decision to retain a memory point which can then be over ridden by further work? Do not infer that this process is passive and automatic. That certainly explains the plasticity of memory. In my own case I have observed my own mind balking at actual memorization of any kind whenever I tried to retain appar... more »

BBC tastelessness (update) - thanks to Alex

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 1 day ago
Regular commenter Alex found an odd Jimmy Savile reference in an old Have I Got News For You programme that was repeated last week. The BBC mislead us on iPlayer that this programme was new: But 10 seconds on Wikipedia shows that this episode was actually first broadcast in April 2012 Regardless of the BBC misleading the public as to which programmes are repeats and which are not, what do you think of the reaction from some of the panel to Jo Brand's joke about children not having to be worried as Jimmy Savile wasn't coming back from the dead?

Source: https://www.facebook.com/TFarmacy?group_id=0 Studies Find Flu Shots Can Harm Your Heart, Infant And Fetus by Sayer Ji Green Med Info, 17 January 2013 *Flu vaccines, according to the best scientific evidence available today, will only work against 10% of the circulating viruses that cause the symptoms of seasonal epidemic influenza. Additionally, flu vaccines have been found to elicit inflammatory reactions that may harm the human heart, the developing fetus, and the fragile immune systems of our infants. So, do the theoretical benefits really outweigh the known harms? * I... more »
