Star Control for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis
On its release for Sega's Mega Drive/Genesis in 1991, *Star Control* was
immediately noteworthy for a couple of things. At that time it was the
largest game cartridge to appear for a home system in the West - it weighed
in at a whopping 12 megabits (1.5 megabytes, give or take). And it, along
with a batch of rather average games published contemporaneously by Accolade,
successfully challenged Sega's restrictive third party licensing procedures.
*Star Control* is also a game of some nostalgic import to me. After
salivating for weeks over reviews, on the very day I picked up my Mega

Clashes flare amid mass Egyptian funeral, killing three more
Clashes flared anew in the turbulent Egyptian city of Port Said on Sunday,
killing at least three more people as a mass funeral was held for most of
the 37 people who died during intense riots in the city a day earlier.
The three were killed when police exchanged fire with gunmen trying to
storm two police stations and the local prison, according to the city's
director of hospitals, Abdel-Rahman Farah. A total of 418 people were
injured, some of them with gunshot wounds, he said.

Gingrich: Republicans "clearly have to change"
On the television program Face the Nation this morning, former Republican
Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich told host Bob Schieffer that his party
needs to repair itself, if the GOP hopes to win moving forward.
Gingrich ... pointed to overly conservative policies as the GOP's 2012

if she's been here 25 years, we had a nominee who said yes, we would, that

George Osborne is destined to be remembered as the most inept Chancellor in British history
It wasn’t a great week for the Coalition. First the Prime Minister made his
much-awaited EU speech, which increased the levels of uncertainty for UK
businesses just when they needed it least. Firms are sitting on loads of
cash but are not willing to invest it as consumers aren’t spending; they
are even less likely to do so now after David Cameron’s intervention.
This may have satisfied his Eurosceptic MPs, but was disastrous in economic
terms. Any foreign firm considering setting up business in Britain as a
gateway to Europe will inevitably be having second thoughts. The speech was

Google Earth exposes North Korea's secret prison camps
Human rights activists are turning to Google Earth to identify the vast
network of prison camps that dot the North Korean countryside and hold as
many as 200,000 people deemed hostile to the regime.
Rights groups are pushing the United Nations high commissioner for human
rights to open an international investigation into Pyongyang's "deplorable"
record on its citizens' rights, including a system of political prisons
that has operated for more than 50 years.
Pyongyang insists that the camps do not exist and are merely foreign
propaganda, but the advent of high-resolution, free ima... more »
Did Harper Give China a Toehold to Canada's Arctic Resources?
China in Tuktoyaktuk? That's right. China has eyes on Arctic resources,

*You didn't hear much Chinese spoken on the Mackenzie River until the
summer of 1999. But then excitement swept through the sleepy Tuktoyaktuk

I Am a Prepper, Sort Of
I am something of a "prepper" but so are most of my neighbours. Our
provincial and local governments encourage us to be that way but not for
the reasons you see on those TV shows with oddballs who believe the
Russians are bound to invade.
I'm a prepper because sometime between this afternoon and a hundred years
from now a 9+ Richter Scale earthquake event is expected to hit this
island. By some accounts it will have enough power to shift this whole
island, all 300+ miles of it, some 15 to 18-feet closer to Ottawa (not that
that's a good thing).

Whither Wynne?
Ontario's Liberals have a new leader. They cannot call her "Premier Dad."
But, even though she can leave the epithet behind, she will not have an
easy time. As Thomas Walkom writes in *The Toronto Star*:
Regardless of who leads it, this is a party — and a government — in deep,
deep trouble.
The Liberals are at war with the province’s teachers. If Wynne sticks to
the position she supported as a minister in Dalton McGuinty’s cabinet — a
position that demands serious spending cuts in order to balance the
province’s books — that war will be difficult to end.

Disaster Bonds Question
Jan 25 2013 The Wall Street Journal ran a remarkable article about disaster
bonds written by J. Neumann.
The article discusses a trend in public financing. Public entities - state
agencies, county governments, and cities and towns- are issuing bonds on
behalf of private companies.
The article illustrates the trend with an example from Iowa: "In December
an Iowa state agency issued $1.2 billion in municipal bonds for an
Egyptian company to build a fertilizer factory. The bonds qualified for
tax-exempt status under a US program to aid Midwestern states flooded in

A Sensible Liberal When the Party Most Needs One
The Liberals are lucky. They have a leadership candidate that could

Murray, unlike her rivals, wants to restore progressivism to the Liberal

the leadership ranks remain decidedly centre-right.

Dublin has said ingredients imported from a Polish supplier were
responsible for the horse meat in burger scandal, which forced UK and Irish

DNA test results released by the Irish government on Saturday traced the

Are Primaries Worth The Trouble? Highest Ranking Member Of Congress Was First Elected By Beating An Incumbent In A Primary
With the plethora of hopelessly gerrymandered districts-- a small and

Tory ministers in new war with Brussels
Days after David Cameron signalled an historic in-out referendum, a series
of ministers and the Mayor of London took hardline positions on elements of
British policy towards Brussels.
They were led by Owen Paterson, the Environment Secretary, who condemned

work as “immoral and illegal”.
The row over the supposed “reform” of the controversial Common Agricultural

to call for stricter gun control.
Marchers were led by Washington DC Mayor Vincent Gray and other officials

Payday Loan Sites Hack other websites to increase their ranking on Google
A Sky News investigation has found that some payday loan brokers have
benefitted from hacking into websites to divert the history and status of a
legitimate business to their domain.
This increases their ranking on Google, and the tactic has given
unregulated brokers access to online traffic worth millions of pounds.
The findings come as the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) prepares its report
into dirty tricks in the market, due to be published in February.

Australian ALEC Member Caught LYING!
I am convinced that the type of ALEC nondisclosure in these Australian
articles IS happening in the US all the time. But our problem is
complicated by two things (1) ALEC legislators have written state laws
specifically exempting ALEC meetings from disclosure in various states and
(2) our state governments are either too cowardice or too lazy to examine
ALEC funding of ALEC legislators.

Elizabeth Warren Warns Someone About The Beltway/Wall Street Revolving Door
Elizabeth Warren wrote in Politico that although she likes the idea of
technical expertise coming to bear on staff positions in government (and
political expertise coming to bear on Wall Street staffs), there is a
"peril" to be wary of as well-- especially in Washington.
Big business orthodoxy against rules and regulations can seep into the

protecting consumers and strengthening markets. Industry groupthink and
overconfidence can prevent clear and evenhanded analysis of problems. The
result can be a group of deci... more »

quite deadly to our environment. These insidious devices contain Mercury

Belgian MP Laurent Louis Tells The Truth About The War on Terror Fraud
This is a powerful speech by Belgian MP Laurent Louis. He tells the truth
about 9/11. He also talks about how European countries are arming and

"It is about time to stop lying to us and treating people like imbeciles.
The time has come to tell the truth," said Laurent Louis.
