Yes, Rubio's A Two-Bit Grifter But I Hope He Doesn't Resign
The *Orlando Sentinel* is a pretty conservative newspaper. They endorsed Rubio when he ran for the Senate and they endorsed Romney when he tried preventing Obama from being reelected in 2012. And last year they backed right-wing GOP incumbents John Mica, Bill Posey and Daniel "Taliban Dan" Webster, as well as a right-wing Tea Party challenger to Alan Grayson, Carol Platt (who Grayson went on to beat 54-43%). But, as you know by now, the *Sentinel* called on Rubio to either start doing his job in the Senate or to resign. Rubio has missed more votes than any other senator this year... more »

2,000 Year Old Computer Discovered In Shipwreck
It appears that the advent of computing began with the birth of Christ, over 2000 years ago, as a small bronze mechanism has been discovered under the sea off Crete. The Antikythera mechanism is thought to be the first ever programmable computer, and the old computer in existence. Yahoo News reports: Thanks to an intricate series of gears and dials, the mechanism could be used as a calendar, to track the phases of the moon, and to predict eclipses. On Socialism
Socialism is a system which makes the corporate unity of society responsible for all its economic processes, or all those affecting life and essential living. If anything important is sold, the Government has sold it; if anything important is given, the Government has given it; if anything important is even tolerated, the Government is responsible for tolerating it. This is the very reverse of anarchy; it is an extreme enthusiasm for authority. It is in many ways worthy of the moral dignity of the mind; it is a collective acceptance of very complete responsibility… A Socialist Gover... more »

Success Academy Find Its Scapegoat

Chicago Workers Thrive Three Years After Taking Over a Window Factory

This should be the desired outcome for established plants. Perhaps we need to take a serious new look at this option. The human capital in play... more »
The White Alien Gods of Mesoamerica: Viracocha, Quetzalcoatl and Kukulkan
We do have a common legend of superior white skinned folk who took on leadership roles as they moved from area to area. The best minimalist explanation is my work up of the Atlantean world that culminated as a global trade empire around 2400 BC and continued until 1159 BC. This was dominated by European and Mediterranean peoples. Time frames allows it all to fit well together. Yet we also have the legend of God like bringers of knowledge in Sumer as well for the same time periods. That implies a world wide culture and that these are our glimpses. We still have not quite se... more »

Of course, i was fooled because we only had western sources that focused on the collapsing german front in the south allowing the allies to largely occupy southern Germany. Yet there was a nasty fight in the north and this informs us of the very nasty fight around Budapest. At the end of the War most remaining... more »

Keeping U.S. Troops In Afghanistan Will Mean Billions For The Contractors
*Kate Brannen, Foreign Policy*: *Cashing In on the Decision to Keep U.S. Troops in Afghanistan* *Why Obama dropping his promise to end America's longest war is going to give contractors billions of dollars.* In August, the nation’s top military officer came to President Barack Obama and bluntly asked him to break a promise to bring the last American troops home from Afghanistan by the time the president left office. Tara's Theme
I didn't really want to go anywhere near this one, but as it seems like a clear example of BBC bias here goes after all... Another story featured on yesterday's BBC One *News at Six* concerned the transgender prisoner Tara Hudson's legal bid to be moved to an all-female prison. Tara (previously Aaron) Hudson had been jailed for headbutting a barman in Bristol. It's a story that's been widely reported and widely discussed, and one interesting element is that pretty much all of the mainstream UK media, from the *Daily Mail* to the *Guardian* and the BBC, is now entirely in tune w... more »

We don't know which is worse in these schemes, the tooth or the moral decay. Meanwhile, we promised a special Halloween post. For reasons beyond our control, we’re forced to postpone. A member of the Scottish Parliament has said that bankers who are found guilty of market rigging, fraud and irresponsible lending should be jailed. Where's Gaza?
The BBC illustrate their report of the crashed Russian aeroplane with a map of the Sinai. To the north east of the Sinai is Israel, however much the BBC might wish it wasn't, but also is Gaza. Odd that the BBC don't mark this territory se... more »

“Moving left to right near the center of this beautifully detailed color composite, the thin, bright, braided filaments are actually long ripples in a sheet of glowing gas seen almost edge on. The interstellar shock wave plows through space at over 500,000 kilometers per hour. Cataloged as NGC 2736, its elongated appearance suggests its popular name, the Pencil Nebula. *Click image for larger size.* The Pencil Nebula is about 5 light-years long and 800 light-years away, but represents only a small part of the Vela supernova remnant. The Vela remnant itself is around 100 light-years i... more »
Chet Raymo, “The Burden Of Thinking”
*“The Burden Of Thinking”* by Chet Raymo “Let me speak for gray. Not black or white. Good or evil. Truth or falsity. Yes or no. Let me speak for maybe. Sort of. More or less. I think so. I am reluctant to speak for gray for fear of being considered wishy-washy. Indecisive. Unprincipled. But lately it seems as if we are surrounded on every side by zealots, and it's not a pretty sight. We are surrounded by people who are so certain of their Truth that they are willing to strap bombs to their chests and walk into crowded pizza parlors. Or fly airplanes into towers. Or bomb abortion cl... more »
800,000 refugees Plan To Return To Syria As Putin Smashes ISIS
After the launch of Russia’s successful bombing campaign to wipe out ISIS in Syria only a month ago, more than 800,000 refugees are now planning to return to their homeland. The Islamic State group had control over vast areas of Syria, forcing tens of thousand of Syrians to escape the terror. The Daily Express reports: Many desperate asylum seekers have made their way to Europe via boats to Greece, with David Cameron agreeing to let 20,000 in Britain over the next five years. But Russia’s bid to wipe out ISIS has been so successful that almost a million Syrians are elected to retur... more »
Free Download: Mark Twain, "Letters From the Earth"
*"Letters From the Earth"* by Mark Twain "This is a strange place, an extraordinary place, and interesting. There is nothing resembling it at home. The people are all insane, the other animals are all insane, the earth is insane, Nature itself is insane. Man is a marvelous curiosity. When he is at his very very best he is a sort of low grade nickel-plated angel; at is worst he is unspeakable, unimaginable; and first and last and all the time he is a sarcasm. Yet he blandly and in all sincerity calls himself the "noblest work of God." This is the truth I am telling you. And this is ... more »

Free Download: Mark Twain, "The Mysterious Stranger"
*"The Mysterious Stranger"* by Mark Twain "An unfinished novella that Mark Twain worked on periodically from roughly 1890 until his death in 1910. The body of the work is a serious social commentary addressing Twain's ideas of the Moral Sense and the ''damned human race.'' Published posthumously in 1916 by Twain's biographer Albert Bigelow Paine. “…I must go now, and we shall not see each other any more." “In this life, Satan, but in another? We shall meet in another, surely?” Then, all tranquilly and soberly, he made the strange answer, “There is no other.” A subtle influence ble... more »

Jihadists Celebrate Canada Withdrawing From The War Against The Islamic State
*Rachel Browne, VICE News*: *'Canada Ran Away:' Jihadists Reportedly Rejoice Over Trudeau Victory* Supporters of the Islamic State (IS) took to Twitter to celebrate prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau's victory last week, and his promise to pull Canada out of the bombing campaign in Iraq and Syria, which jihadists hailed as a victory for their cause. According to a report released Thursday from The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), there was a wave of reaction following last week's federal election, including from prominent IS activists.
