By Brenda Norrell Censored News My grandmother loved words. She was a dirt farmer in the old south. Each day she would work the word puzzles in the newspaper, challenged and awakened by those words. At the turn of the Nineteenth Century, she received a college degree in English. But she returned to the land. She never cut her hair or said unkind words about others. I aked her once if she could

Russia Wants To Take Over The Arctic. Announces Arctic Military Modernization And Buildup
*(Click on Image to Enlarge)* *Business Insider:** This map shows Russia's game-changing militarization of the Arctic* As the Arctic warms, Russia is positioning itself to become the dominant player in a resource-rich and strategically positioned region. In order to capitalize on the oil and gas under the Arctic seabed and exploit new shipping routes as ice cover recedes, Moscow is undertaking a major military upgrade of its northern coast and outlying archipelagos. Its new bases — which include search-and-rescue stations, ports and airstrips, and military headquarters — are mean... more »

Mexico's Economy Is Starting To Flop
*Washington Post*:* Mexico’s economy was supposed to soar. It’s starting to flop.* Largely lost amid the frantic scramble after drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s dramatic prison escape, one of the biggest leaps of faith for the Mexican economy landed with a flop. At the first auction last month to sell the rights to drill for oil in Mexico — as the country opens its oil industry to foreign investment for the first time in eight decades — the government sold just two of its 14 blocks. The Undeclared U.S. - Iran Alliance In Iraq Is Starting To Fray
Washington Post: *Expanding U.S. role in Iraq strains awkward alliance with Iran* The expanding U.S. military campaign against the Islamic State group in Iraq relies in part on an uneasy, arms-length partnership with Shiite militias backed by Iran — organizations that were once relentlessly effective killers of U.S. troops. Now, as the campaign enters its second year, there are signs that this awkward alliance may be fraying: militia threats of renewed attacks on U.S. personnel, a greater U.S. effort to bolster Sunni forces that are traditional adversaries of Iran and accusations... more »

thoughts on re-watching m*a*s*h, one of the greatest tv shows of all time

After struggling through the last seasons of 30 Rock, I've rewarded myself by starting M*A*S*H from season 1, episode 1. (Thank you, Netflix!) It's no coincidence that M*A*S*H, one of the best and most daring sitcoms of all time, first aired in 1972. That risk-taking extended right down to network television, bringing realism and social commentary to a level previously unseen - and not... more »
Tory Decadence and the Trade Unions
This blog has had occasion to comment on the decadence and stupidity of our Tory party friends. This isn't an *ad hom* attack, it's a properly social scientific concept - honest. Update: Florida's Senate Race
Progressive icon Alan Grayson seems to be feeling pretty good about his ability to beat Chuck Schumer's Wall Street puppet, "ex"-Republican Patrick Murphy, in the Democratic primary for the Senate seat Marco Rubio is giving up. After all, it's a *Democratic* primary and there is no one from the Florida federal delegation who better represents the values, hopes and aspirations of Florida Democrats than Grayson-- while even the tersest examination of Murphy's voting record shows him voting for the Boehner agenda far more frequently than for progressive initiatives. Murphy has been ... more »

The Russian-Harvard Privatization Back Story
The Nation Through the late summer and fall of 1991, as the Soviet state fell apart, Harvard Professor Jeffrey Sachs and other Western economists participated in meetings at a dacha outside Moscow where young, pro-Yeltsin reformers planned Russia’s economic and political future. Sachs teamed up with Yegor Gaidar, Yeltsin’s first architect of economic reform, to promote a plan of “shock therapy” to swiftly eliminate most of the price controls and subsidies that had underpinned life for Soviet citizens for decades. Shock therapy produced more shock–not least, hyperinflation that hi... more »

Certainly not the Obama Administration, and their brilliant geo-political think-tank neo-conservative strategists. John Kerry’s brilliant “win-win” proposal of last September during his September 11 Jeddah meeting with ailing Saudi King Abdullah was simple: Do a rerun of the highly successful State Department-Saudi deal in 1986 when Washington persuaded the Saudis to flood the world market at a time of over-supply in order to collapse oil prices worldwide, a kind of “oil shock in reverse.” In 1... more »

New production process makes PLA bioplastic cheaper and greener
Costs do matter of course but get anywhere close and you will have a mandated market in which consumer products in particular will fit. We all want plastic that in the long term cannot truly survive. Today we have plastic that loses its integrity in about twenty years but still resists biological breakdown. Thus we have floating plastic dust in the ocean. We want to know that that can be made impossible or at least short lived. It is obviously a difficult problem but the winner will own the plastics market thereafter. This is actually great progress and should start showing... more »

Kennedy Assasination Pattern
What is presently interesting is that a number of witnesses have come forward to tell their stories in often self published books. This has produced a mass of hard data, impressions and people who saw something that they did not understand. Out of that it has come time to propose a conjecture regarding what actually took place. At least we will not try to stuff it all into the long failed and totally discredited lone gunman theory. Even then the lack of a fleshed out alternative conjecture has allowed other partial explanations to be discredited rather easily. So let us get ... more »

Falun Gong is a mass Chinese movement that taps known traditions to support physical and mental health. It appears to have organized politically only in response to Chinese persecution. The potential spiritual aspects appear nascent and largely out of sight allowing maximum participation. That it can be built around spiritual study groups is an obvious and necessary next step in its evolution and that will bring it into the global main stream. In the meantime, it is the... more »
Mussel-inspired Surgical Glue Shuts Down Bleeding Wounds in 60 Seconds

Is Iran Triggering A Middle East Arms Race?
