Antonio the Cava is a retired teacher. After 42 years of teaching he decided that he could do more by spreading the love of reading to children who were unable to get to a library. Thus, in 2003, he bought a second-hand motorbike and modified it to create a portable library that contains 700 books and has been traveling since then.
Each week he drives to the villages in the region of Basilicata in southern Italy. The sound of an organ announces his arrival. When they hear the song, excited children run to the mobile library for their next book. Antonio travels over 300 miles a month without any compensation, just to make children smile and invest in their futures. What an incredible inspiration he is. Thank you Antonio for all that you do!

Did Scientists Just Solve the Bee Collapse Mystery?
neonic-treated bees suddenly abandoned hives that had been healthy all summer, while untreated bees hung around and repopulated their hives.
Lu stressed that the treated bees showed no ill effects during the 13 weeks of the feeding—it was only well after exposure to the pesticides, during the winter, that they fled their hives.
Bayer also took issue with the length of the exposure, arguing that it went on too long. "Given the artificially high levels tested over 13 consecutive weeks, the colony failure rates observed are completely expected*," the company claimed in its statement. Lu countered that in New England, where he performed the experiment, bees can forage outside from March to September—30 weeks. In other parts of the country, he added, bees can forage for as long as 41 weeks.
Shoot yourself in the foot, Bayer ?*

This electric car goes more than 1,600 km* without recharging

An electric car may soon be able to cruise the highway all day without stopping or recharging — new technology demonstrated in Montreal this week can extend the range of an electric car by 1,600 kilometres, its inventors say.
We can call it a conspiracy if we want (and be open to all ideas), but the truth is that there is a huge financial incentive for chemical companies to dump this stuff in our water, much like how Monsanto has incentive to use GMOs to sell more of its proprietary chemicals.

One cannot and should not simply interpret the IPCCs ranges for AR4 or 5 as confidence intervals or pdfs and hence they are not directly comparable to observation based intervals (as e.g. in Otto et al).In the same way that one cannot expect a nice fit between observational studies and the CMIP5 models
So models and observations are not to be compared.
We will stay tuned in the coming days for the continuing saga as yet another climate scientist experiences public flogging for noting that modeled temperature trends are not consistent and way over observations.

Northern Gateway Pipeline report 'flawed', 300 scientists tell PM
Open letter from 300 scientists to PM Harper says report is so flawed, it is essentially useless
Open letter from 300 scientists to PM Harper says report is so flawed, it is essentially useless
Hundreds of scientists have signed a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper saying the recent report on the Northern Gateway Pipeline is so flawed, it's essentially useless.
The scientists say the Joint Review Panel report has so many systemic errors and omissions it can't be used to make decisions on whether the pipeline is beneficial to the public.
The 300 scientists from across Canada and around the world say the JRP's recommendation to approve the proposed pipeline from the oil sands in Alberta to the North Coast of B.C. was based on a "flawed analysis of the risks and benefits to B.C.'s environment and society."
"We urge you in the strongest possible terms to reject this report," says the letter.
The report approval, which was released in December, included 209 required conditions, including developing a marine mammal protection plan, researching heavy oil cleanup and conducting emergency response exercises.
The Harper government is expected to decide whether to approve the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline sometime this month.
UBC associate professor Kai Chan, who helped pen the letter, calls the report a failure.
"The consideration of how the benefits outweigh the costs and risks was really given almost no space and no logic. It's absolutely insufficient as a basis to make a decision as to whether the project is in the public interest," says Chan.
Among the concerns raised in the letter, the group says the report:
"Failed to consider important impacts, such as the increased greenhouse gas emissions that could result from oils sands development and burning Northern Gateway oil products in Asia.
"Reached conclusions contradicting the government’s own scientific evidence, including risks to large whales and other marine species.
"Unjustifiably dismissed the uncertain risks posed by diluted bitumen spills at sea as unimportant risks.
"Relied on an oil spill response plan that is not yet developed
"Relied on information from the proponent without external evaluation.
Failed "to provide an explanation of how it had reached its conclusions, especially the central one, that the project’s benefits justify its risks and costs."
"Given such flaws, the JRP report is indefensible as a basis to judge in favour of the project," the letter concludes.

Do you know ocean WATER is clean energy liquid natural gasses; hydrogen and oxygen? Did you know that’s what rocket fuel comes from and it can power autos, boats and a variety of things? It seems crazy to ship tankers of polluting petroleum across oceans of clean energy liquid natural gases and think its useless water, when the boats could be powered by hydrogen they make themselves from the unlimited water supply in the ocean instead of limited tanks of oil. Instead of pipelines carry polluting petrol products to the sea, ocean water can be piped inland for clean energy, drinking and irrigation. Instead of arguing about which green tech is better, integrating a number of different clean energy technologies will enable many machines and buildings to power themselves and still create many similar jobs.
